word, dbfan2007, watching welker get first down after first down can be so damn frustrating.

weird tangent to consider: we might be able to thank McD for this. There were reports earlier this month that Welker was concerned McD didn't like him and would minimize Welker's playing time with a healthy Gronk and Hernandez.

I don't see how anyone could disagree with this move. He was on my personal wish list, more than any free agent but I didnt think it would become a reality. Big agressive move and our WR core is going to be EPIC!

But it also takes Toms fav toy away. Which is double EPIC!

discussion time: how does make the broncos' offense better? i'm not playing devil's advocate, seriously asking for the sake of conversation. does the team convert a higher percentage of first downs? score more points? open up the long ball for DT?

True. But what I was getting at was it pretty much takes away Swope, Austin, and most of the other names mentioned away. Maybe 6-7 rounder, more than likely we bring in a few UDFA.

Imagine covering Decker, Thomas, and Welker. Throw in our TEs and a back out of the backfield. That is a nightmare scenario for a defense.

It puts that much more stress on the defenses' linebackers and safeties. Your running game should really prosper from this. I wouldn't be shocked if Denver now looked for an early tight end to absolutely maul teams in the middle of the field. If Thomas is on the outside and Decker is opposite of him, that's already hard to deal with. Welker in the slot takes up a team's best coverage linebacker. What do you do against an athletic tight end who can stretch the middle of the field?

This is a nightmare for defenses to deal with. Atlanta probably had the best WR corps in football, not anymore.

Denvers the team to beat in the AFC....sorry we just are. Everyone gets weaker and we get stronger. Let the Pats sign Jennings for all I care. We already have guys on the outside now we have the NFLs best slot guy. First down after first down after first down....win after win after win...you get the picture.

Not exactly the receiver I thought Denver needed. Not going to complain though. We desperately need a burner at WR on the roster. Baltimore ate us up on the short shit. They gameplanned us knowing there was noone with field stretching ability to deal with, and that's why they won.

Amendola isn't bad, but he gets dinged up a lot. Welker has been pretty healthy other than the knee injury.

He was also one of the guys that just gave us fits (Gronkowski being the other). If it makes it easier for our defense against the Pats, then it is just icing on the cake.

This is an epic move by Elway. I'm a big Brandon Stokley fan, but the 36 year old is old and slow at this point. Welker is a definite upgrade.

And Denver just signed Vazquez to sure up that O-line. Holy mother of Balls. I didn't think this offense could get any better. and if they can land Steven Jackson or another "power" running back...this Broncos offense would be borderline cheating LOL

Team chemistry was off the charts last year, and it seems like it just improved. Stokley, Decker, DT, Tamme, Manning, and Dreessen formed the nucleus of a veteran brotherhood, a work-hard play-hard group of dudes. It's not my opinion, your hear the players mention it in interviews. They say the fraternity was unlike that of other teams they had been on.

I think it helps when you want your offense to put in the extra hours. Welker will fit right in, I expect. Obviously he takes touches away from Stokely, but that doesn't mean Stokely is any less valuable.

This team = Jupiter-sized Chip on Shoulder.

"I think it would be a great move if (the Broncos) got him," Stokley said. "I think he would be a great fit here."

Wait a minute. Stokley does realize Welker will be taking his job?

"I know that," Stokley said. "I'm just talking about production. Look at what he's done the last six years. I've always thought he was underrated. You see these other receivers out there getting big money, I think Wes deserves what some of these guys are getting."

Stokley caught 45 passes for 544 yards and five touchdowns from his good friend Manning last year while making $925,000. But at 36, Stokley was turned loose to free agency. Welker is 31.

"I'm fine with whatever happens with my situation, at this point," Stokley said. "If last year was my last ride, with the kind of year we had as a team, I'd be happy with that. But you never know what will happen. I might keep playing elsewhere. I'm just going to continue to stay in shape and wait to see if someone calls. If they do, I'll be ready."

I'd rather have Stokley as the No. 4 than Willis. He won't misread defenses and cause interceptions (San Diego game specifically).

Ugh. I'd rather cut Lance Ball and give his money to Stokley. Let Stokley be the #4 RB or whatever Ball was going to be. I just don't understand some moves. I'm not sure why exactly we have to get rid of Stokley because we got Welker. I guess I'm just being picky.

Problem is Stokley doesnt play special teams. Id love to have him back though, he proved to be productive enough last year.

We're not "getting rid" of Stokley, his contract is up. I don't really see a reason to re-sign him. I'd rather draft a WR who can also play special teams. I'd like Chad Bumphis in the latter rounds myself.

I agree there's not much point in having Stokley here now, primarily because he can't play special teams. But his pure veteran saviness, awareness, chemistry with Peyton, and good hands make him the better than almost any number 3 receiver possible...and probably the best #4. Even if he's slower and old, he was just as reliable in clutch moments last year than anyone. He also had that great end zone catch in the playoff game. He's certainly better than Willis.

It just happens that Wes Welker slides in as one of the only slot guys that is better than Stokley. Business is business, but I like Stokley and his character, and I'd love if he could still be on the roster...if not, I'd love to see him as a coach.

Sorry, football is a tough business. We all love Stokely, but he's 37 years old and we found a much better option for his position. It may be nice for sentimental reasons but it doesn't make football sense to keep him.

He worked with Amendola one year and Welker for four year in total (two prior to come to Denver and two since his return as offensive coordinator.) Amendola has also missed 21 games in a four year span and Welker has only missed three in the same span of time.

This is my favorite part of the article...

Welker, who agreed to the deal without visiting Broncos headquarters, is scheduled to travel to Denver on Thursday morning. He had interest from another AFC team offering two years and closer to $15 million, which was the top contract proposal Welker received in a market that didn't unfold the way he and his representatives envisioned, but he didn't pursue it because the club isn't viewed as a contender. The Broncos, who visit the Patriots in 2013, are one of the AFC's top contenders, which was important to Welker.
