View Full Version : Broncos' Ryan Clady to receive franchise tag as John Elway begins busy offseason

Ryan Clady is an unrestricted free agent who isn't going anywhere.

The Broncos' All Pro left tackle will return to protect Peyton Manning's blind side.

"We're going to tag him," said John Elway, the Broncos' senior vice president of football operations.

Elway added that placing a franchise tag on Clady, a procedure that will be made as soon as Tuesday, does not preclude the team and player from working out a multiyear contract extension.

In our previous post, we discussed why the Denver Broncos need to retain star free-agent left tackle Ryan Clady.

In this post, we will discuss that the Broncos agree.

Denver football leader John Elway told the Denver Post that the team will place the franchise tag on Clady for this season. That was the expected recourse.

It sounds as though Broncos are trying to figure out a long term deal to get the tag off of him. Before the training camp starts.

Clady/Beadles/Walton/Kuper/Franklin= one of the best Olines in the NFL!
Good thing about it is they are all young..I believe Kup is the only one over 26/27?

Not even close. Our interior line gets pushed in like....well, let's just leave the rest unsaid. I think Denver needs to deal with both guard positions.

I disagree,I think when Kuper is healthy(not been for a while)he is a great G.....Beadles is getting better all the time,IMO!

But Walton and Koppen at the C position is a different story,we have not got a great Center!

We missed on drafting Pouncey like 3 years ago,Walton isn't even close to Pouncey!

Denver wasn't really in a position to draft Pouncey.

I can pick an All-Pro team on "missed" picks too.

Denver was so in position to draft Pouncey, they traded down and drafted DT at #25,Pitt said they would draft Pouncey at #17 and we traded down and Pitt got him,you better look up your facts!

The Pouncey pick would have been a reach where they were, and the DT draft pick at 25 was better than Pouncey, anyway. Either way, Denver didn't "miss" on Pouncey, because it didn't come down to a choice between one player or another.

The "we should have had [insert player]" crowd drives me nuts. In this case, Denver wouldn't have had one of the most explosive receivers in the game, they would have had a center. I'll take the receiver.

The monumental mistake in that draft was sacrificing so much to get Tebow.

BeastFromEast92
02-15-2013, 09:33 PM
We could have taken Pouncey at #16,Pitt took him at #17,NOT a reach,I like DT too,but WRs come and go,a Pro Bowl Center is damn hard to find!
I agree the Tebow fiasco killed us,we could have gotten DT and Pouncey!

How could Denver take Pouncey at 16 when Tennessee had the 16th pick and never acquired it from, or gave it to, anyone?

We should have gave him a new deal last offseason. Now since he gave up 1 sack for the year it will only command more money from us. The franchise tag at least lets us examine him one more year.

I think they're just using the tag as insurance in case a long term deal can't be reached. But I think they'll ink him to a 5 year, $60 mil or so contract before the season starts.

Klis is right before Clady and the Broncos broke off talks last year they were close on money they just have how much the contract will be guaranteed.

The Broncos have officially placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on left tackle Ryan Clady.

The tag gives Clady a $9.828 million salary for the 2013 season — nearly triple the $3.5 million salary he earned in 2012. However, the tag also drastically restricts Clady from enjoying the bidding fruits of free agency. Teams can still bid on Clady's services, but the Broncos would have the right to match any offer. If the Broncos decline to match the offer, they would get two, first round draft picks in return from the team that would sign him.

These restrictions are so prohibitive teams almost never bother to pursue franchise-tagged free agents.

The NFL released its franchise tag figures to its 32 teams Friday and the franchise tag salary for offensive linemen is $9.828 million, an $168,000 increase from the $9.66 million figure teams and agents had been expecting.

The Broncos will place the franchise tag on left tackle Ryan Clady by the Monday deadline, a maneuver that all but takes him off the free-agent market. The Broncos and Clady hope to work out a multiyear contract extension prior to training camp, but serious negotiations may not commence until the two-time All Pro is further along in his recovery from right shoulder surgery.

Interesting that they chose to use the NON EXCLUSIVE tag on Clady. If another team wanted to offer him a deal and the Broncos chose to let him go they would get 2 first rounders. The free agency psych games begin. go ahead and test the market and let it tell you your worth.

His worth is highest paid tackle in the game. He's among the three or four best at his position, and when you're among the very best and its contract time, you get the best contract in the league. Denver knows that. That's why they franchised him so they could negotiate exclusively.

Exactly. His worth is to be paid TOP LT money in the NFL. The Broncos are using the "letting us see how you heal" thing to delay the contract, but I think everyone knows that this injury isn't career ending, or even career threatening in a reasonable sense.... thus Clady WILL be paid as the highest LT in the NFL.
