Rudimentary observations - Toews is probably our best player, but it feels like when Kane gets going is when we're at our best. It feels like we're a deep team and we have a ton of guys who excel at killing penalties. We play really solid defense, but we don't hit for shit. The Canucks game was a shining example of this. Still, we get a lot of steals and we are a really, really fast team. Last year we got outmuscled hard by the Coyotes, I hope we learned from that.

Crawford is a guy who baffles me. For the record, I think he's legitimately a good goalie and gets hated on a lot by the fans and Chicago media. With that being said, he does a lot of it to himself. He's definitely the starter, but Emery has looked insane when he's played. He just went 45 for 47 and was credited with 30 quality shot saves. That term seems clunky to me, but it's what the announcer kept saying. Regardless, Crawford has the talent to be a really good goalie.

Hossa is a machine. Two games ago he scores the game winner. Right before that he gets a big hit on the opposition and stops what would have been an incredible opportunity. He is by far my favorite player that we have.

Patrick Kane doesn't have a drinking problem.

He drinks.
He gets drunk.
He falls down.

My Dad was a Blackhawks fan. He liked Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. I don't know much hockey, to be honest, but he raised me to hate the Canadiens. They had Yves Cournoyer. We watched "Hockey Night in Canada" in French when we lived in Vermont, and they always had the Canadiens on and we rooted against them as a family, except little Ottokar, who was too little.

That's pretty much all I've got, King. Sorry.

How do you feel about Emery?

he has really, really stepped it up this season. He looks like he did when he played in Ottawa. That's a great story, he has made a full recovery from a disease that basically stops people from ever doing anything ever again. He had the same disease as Bo Jackson, his hip bones were dying and they had to graft bone from other parts of his body to the dead parts. It's a miracle he is playing, Bo Jackson couldn't do anything after

I'm not sure. They kept pointing out that C-bus was trying to beat Oduya around last night. It didn't accomplish anything. It's also worth noting that we got manhandled after Hossa went out. I think he's the key for us. He's not our best player, but he's big time. He seems to do everything well.

Now, this goes back to a time before I watched hockey, so remember that when you read this. But one of my buddies who watches the NHL said that when the Penguins went nuts in the playoffs, they were similar to us in physicality.

If you can take the hits and still play at a high level of play, the other team is cooked. Heavy hitting teams don't typically skate at the level of the Hawks. They expend energy hitting as well. IDK, I'm optimistic about the team. If Sharpe comes back and plays well, our depth is retarded. That has to stem some of the aggressiness as well, right?

How did they push us around when we ran the entire second and most of the third quarter. The rookie kicking the puck in and Kane's missed knock in is what lost us the game.

When we have Hossa and Sharpe they won't be able to play us like that. For starters, Hossa is a beast and two Sharpe provides another skilled skater that they can't deal with.

I didnt watch last nights game, first one I've missed this season. I was keeping track of the score and it seemed close the whole time but from what they are saying on the radio, the 'hawks looked like they were running around quite a bit. I just dont think they can play with the big boys like Anaheim, LA and Boston. This is the same exact team as last season that stayed away from any physicality. They want to be a puck control team which means they have to be able to take hits, I admit they are taking hits this season and not trying to shy away from them like last season but it takes too big a toll on them and by the third period they lose their steam and end up losing the game in the third. You have to be able to not only take hits but dish them out as well and this team just doesnt really like to hit except for maybe 2 or 3 players.

I don't see them going far in the playoffs, especially if they meet up with LA, Anaheim or Vancouver in early.

It comes down to health. The team is at its best when it fields a ton of relentless skaters who can score. The first chunk of the season we 'barely' got hit when we could keep throwing out Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharpe. That was when we get more scoring from our tertiary players. I understand your point about hitting, but at the same time when we're getting tired out from being hit, it effects the other team to.

Last night's game was frustrating to watch. After the first goal the hawks spanked the damn Kings. We just missed a bunch of 'easy' goals. When we gave up that goal with 0.05 seconds left shook my head.

As far as I understand hockey, anyone can beat anyone. The King were a really low seed last season and look what they did. Anaheim is our biggest threat, and we're .500 against them, in a whopping two games. Boston will be tough, but I've seen that team. They're not half as fast as us. Speed can kill.

well the problem with that is the playoffs are different than regular season, you actually take much more punishment in the playoffs, the physical play ramps up. LA is a team built for the playoffs, big strong phyical players that can forecheck and defend very well and they have one of the best coaches for that type of team. Anaheim is a little different in that its main line is the more physical line and the 2nd and 3rd lines are actually faster. I don't know if you watched the Anaheim game but the 'hawks defense lost track of Cogliano a few times and gave up breaks. Chicago had that kind of grit the year they won the cup with guys like Eager, Byfuglien, Burrish, Brouwer, Madden, Bickell and Fraser. Now they have Bickell and Shaw (who is too small for that game). They have Bollig and Carcillo too, but they dont play much. Heck Carcillo was dressed the other night and only played 3 minutes, so they double shifted Kane all game until he had nothing left.

The Blackhawks need a 2nd line center bad, I love Sharp but he is better served as a winger. Theres all kinds of talk that they are going after Iginla which I think is a a mistake. They need his grit but they definitely don't need a RW, nor do they need to give up depth in order to get him.

This game really represents my point about how the teams that do the hitting take a toll, too. When you send so many big guys out there to skate against one of the fastest teams in the league, they tire out. Especially when you have young guys like we do who hit back. Are the Hawks always going to be able to play through that much abuse? No. But big physical teams pay a cost for their play as well. The Hawks are a top flight team, no one should want to play them.

well you used the wrong game as an example because yesterday was one of the first games that the 'hawks actually hit back, both teams were playing very physical in the 1st period. What did the 'hawks do during the 1st period scoring wise? nothing.
Then the game changed in the 2nd, St Louis stopped playing that game and the blackhawks started getting chances off the boards and into the slot. If you think I am making this up go back and watch it, even the commentators during the game and during the intermissions stated it at least 10 times.

They still had the better period, Weazel. Also this wasn't the first game that the Hawks hit back. I'll cite the Columbus Games and the Red Wing games. The Blues stopped trying to be as aggressive with checking when it dawned on them that they had no way to score playing that game. They couldn't keep it up and have any real shot at scoring.

I don't think the Blackhawks played well in this series. I think they maybe had one good game but looked very average the rest. It could be the competition level though, so here's hoping they can ramp it up for the next series because the Sharks look to be playing very well. The Sharks series will come down to special teams though, Hakws PK is fine but the PP just isn't doing much while the Sharks is running top notch.

they played good enough to beat the wings the last couple games but even if they get by them, they will have to play alot better to beat LA. The constant stretch pass game plan just isn't going to cut it. I have also never had any faith in crawford, he allows at least 1 weak goal a game.

We are flat out better than the Kings and you know it. They are not an offensively gifted team and they don't play D like Detroit. After Quick, the next five best players are Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp and Crawford. You have a VERY harsh definition of what constitutes a weak girl, brochacho.

wait, did you just say that Detroit plays better D than LA? LA have only given up 1.5 goals per game in the playoffs and are playing much better than they did in the regular season... one look at this team will show you they are built for the playoffs. I agree that Detroit played very well defensively in the playoffs but LA's entire game is based off the D,

I'm not saying the Blackhawks can't win but they will need to play better than they did against the wings, the lazy stretch passes and defensive zone blind passes can't keep happening. BTW, who would you rather have, Howard or Quick? They're going to need to get more traffic in front of the net than they have been. You take away the stretch passes and the occasional easy goal from the perimeter, you have a tougher game on your hands.

Toews, Hossa and Kane are going to have to start getting to the dirty areas as well, can't be relying on Bickel, Shaw and the other role players to do it all.

Don't kid yourself, this is going to be a very hard series... and they won't be coming back from a 3-1 deficit.

The Kings don't hit like Detroit does. I've watched a few of the Shark/Kings games. The Kings are a great team, but they don't have the players to do to Toews what Detroit did. Even then, Toews was back to playing good hockey at the end of the series.

Also, you cannot categorize our stretch passes as lazy. A more accurate description would be precise.

Here's the thing, Quick is a beast. He really is, but he's had some issues this postseason. If contact is made to him, he gets angry and losses focus. Here's the other thing, Howard played incredibly well against us. As a matter of fact, that series he just had against us is equivalent to how Quick usually plays.

Here's another thing, let's talk about how the Kings are going to score on us? We're a great defensive team and so are they. However, they literally don't have an offensive player as good as Kane or Toews. They certainly don't have anyone playing on offense like Sharp is.

Let's talk about special teams. We're better. Let's talk about coaching, we're better. The Kings don't have home court advantage. That's a big issue for them.

We are the better team. Stop being such a pessimist. Yes, they can beat us, but I guarantee you that we get at least one game from them at home. I'm not sure how they can deal with that.

We are the better team. Stop being such a pessimist. Yes, they can beat us, but I guarantee you that we get at least one game from them at home. I'm not sure how they can deal with that.

actually Detroit isn't known as a physical team, LA is definitely a physical team and is coached as one. I am not sure where you are getting your info King.

Okay, Im not sure if you have ever played hockey but when a team like clogs the neutral zone (like LA does), the stretch passes don't work very often. I'm not saying that they will never work, but there has to be more team movement with short passes to get through them.

Quick has had issues in the playoffs? he has a 1.5 GAA... and a .948 save percentage. Again, I'm not sure where you are getting your information.

Special teams... our power play is pathetic and has been all year, among the bottom third. Our penalty kill is very good though.

coaching... There are a few coaches I would take before Quenneville, Babcock and Sutter are number 1 and 2. Hawks are head and shoulders better than the wings but our coach got out-coached by Babcock (best in the league). Sutter is just as good as Babcock and his players buy into his system, dont be fooled, Q is good but he's no God. I give the coaching nod to LA

home ice... although it doesnt mean as much as it used to, I agree we hold the advantage on them.

I didn't say that they were going to beat the hawks, I said they had to play better than they did against the Wings because they are much better than the Wings.

King, Im not trying to be a jerk but I dont pull this stuff out of my ass... everything I have said here has been said countless times by plenty of hockey experts.

For the issues on Quick, he gets angry when he gets touched. More so than pretty much any other goalie in the playoffs. On the NHL network they were talking about how many of his goals came after he got hit. They also said that when he gets angry he's not as technically sound. In other words, if he ever gets touched he doesn't play as well and then is when he gives up goals.

Toews goes HARD to the net. I suspect Quick will not enjoy that.

So you think this is a case of him playing out of his mind? He was good in the regular season, but he's killing teams. I suspect it's because we have so many offensive threats to keep track of.

I absolutely want Stahlberg back.

Weazal, can we talk about my hatred for Johnny Oduya? He is a turnover machine. He passes for shit, doesn't blow anyone up with a big hit. I'm not sure what it is that he does? He's solid against on special teams. Ugh.

no, Bickel has shown flashes before, he's just getting more ice time now and they are using him in the right situations. I dont see them resigning either him or Stalberg unfortunately. They are up against the cap and the cap is going down next season... they can't afford what other teams will offer them. Stalberg opens the ice up for them with his speed and that will be hard to replace.

They will free up some money when they buyout Montador and/or Olesz but it wont be enough.

I don't mind Oduya, he's fine as a 5 or 6 D-man and they only gave up a 5th round pick for him. I think he and Rosival were fine pickups that solidify the back end. Does he cough up the puck occasionally? yeah, but he makes some good defensive plays as well. better than having Montador or Brookbank back there, thats for sure.

Poet
06-03-2013, 05:01 PM

not at all... he deserved a game. It shouldn't have came to that though. If Walkom would have called Carter for the elbow, the crosscheck, the hook or the slash to a bare hand and an attempt to injure, Keith wouldn't have lost his cool and slashed him back. Walkom was skating right along with them watching the whole thing but allowed Carter to do whatever he wanted and then only called Keith on the retaliation.

The most important player in the NHL is Quick. The Red Wings series shows that even if you shut down one of our star players, so what, we got four other ones.

Right now Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharpe and Bickell are playing out of their minds. Could Boston win? Absolutely, but the Hawks are worth more respect than what you're showing them.

The 'hawks defense are looking over their shoulders when going after the puck and when they do get to it they are rushing to blindly throw it up the ice so they dont get hit

The 'hawks offense are scared to go to the net and are skating around the perimeter. They refuse to go to the dirty areas and throwing weak wrist shots from the perimeter isn't going to get you goals.

If they don't want to get dirty then you may have seen the last goal they will score this series. BTW... Kane is an absolute waste out there. He's so scared to do anything but float around the blue line and a bit on the sidewall. I guess thats why he had 10 minutes of ice time though.

you're calling Detroit physical? lmao Minnesota is not physical either. LA is, but are also dead slow, while Boston isn't.

If you watched the last game you would see that they are soft... they were constantly looking over their shoulders and throwing the puck away when challenged. The "stars" would not go to the dirty areas and would skate around the perimeter throwing low percentage shots towards the net. I am sorry to break it to you but that is the definition of soft. I'm not talking out my ass, I have played and coached hockey for well over 30 years. If you notice, I don't know the intricacies of football so I when people on here start talking details in the game, I stand back, keep my mouth shut and let the big boys talk, but I won't do that when it comes to hockey, I know the sport. If you lived in a hockey market you would hear the experts say the same thing I am, this team is soft.

I missed a total of three games this year. Five if you add up missing an occasional period. A lot of times the Monday and Tuesday night games would interfere with my class schedule and what not.

Detroit is in fact a physical team. That's their reputation and they certainly played that way in the postseason. The Wild only got into the playoffs because of their physicality. They certainly didn't get in because of their tremendous scoring ability. I haven't heard anyone ever say that those two teams in particular were NOT physical hockey teams.

And no, I haven't played hockey. Now this is going to go into the "all due respect category," because I'm not taking a pot shot at you. I don't understand how in the world you come to some of your conclusions. In Springfield Illinois, there are about as many Blues fans as Hawk fans. Even most of those wretched STL Blues fans don't think we're soft. We're a smaller team based on speed, skill and puck possession. We are never going to outhit a team. If we're even marginally close, you know we're probably winning the game. I unfortunately didn't get to see the last game. I scheduled like a retard and missed it. But the main point that I'm making is that whenever we loss you call us soft.

Why?

Surely the Blackhawks are capable of losing a game and not being soft. We weren't soft in games one or two. We weren't soft against the Wild. We weren't soft against Detroit in that losing streak. We just got outplayed.

I also echo the sentiments that you're a good guy. I also think that if you want to talk football, talk football. ******* Christ man, it's a message board. If you were interested in the details of football, ******* post. This is a message board where some people think Von Miller is a MLB and that Champ Bailey is hurting his team as a starting cornerback. I just lightly trolled a thread and said that Ryan Clady was going to be a ******* Cowboy or a Charger. Some of the fans here think it's robbery that the entire roster of 97/98 aren't in the Hall of Fame.

There are a lot of really good posts here. There are equally a lot of awful posts. It's a message board.

I have been watching hockey for about two years now. I really enjoy watching my Hawks play. Now you can totally make the argument that you know more about hockey than I do. I don't challenge that. But I know what soft looks like. I've watched the NFL avidly for the better part of 12 years. I was a sportswriter for a year and a half. Being soft isn't just relegated to one sport. I've seen soft basketball, football, baseball and hockey players.

In general, emphasis on general, when the Hawks are playing like that, they are second guessing themselves. The rink is getting smaller and sometimes they don't respond as well as they should. That's okay, Weazel. The Bruins looked lost in spurts of this postseason as well. The Bruins died on the ice in the second and third period of overtime in game one. That same criticism of responding poorly applies to most teams in most sports.

The Hawks got lost like that against Detroit. They snapped out of it. Tonight they get a chance to tie the series up and go home. I picked Boston to win in seven. I hated to do that but that was my call. Even if we win tonight, I will probably stand by that call as well.

Detroits reputation is of a physical team? wait, what? They are a possession team, in fact it's the style Chicago bases their gameplan from.
Minnesota isn't known as a physical team either, they are known as a defensive team that clogs the neutral zone to slow a team and the game down.

I'm not going to debate every thought because I am at work but I'm just going to end it with one thing... I will agree with the former players and coaches that are paid to give their expertise on the game, rather than your buddies from the mid-west.

Then they were silly. That's basic sports 101. You don't want to play against a team with guys who are champs. The postseason makes everything that much harder. Why on earth would we want to play against them in the PLAYOFFS?!!? It was better to hope that Columbus snuck in.

why would you have wanted the hawks to play Columbus? They were the hottest team going into the playoffs and played Chicago VERY well all season long, actually one of the only teams that gave them fits.

why would they want them to play the wings? The wings were not very good this season and looked to be easy for Chicago to beat AND less travel.

Weazel, we beat Columbus each time we played them, sans maybe one game. I honestly don't recall. We swept the Wings. So we beat both of those teams. The difference between the Wings and C-Bus is that C-bus has no real playoff experience. They don't have great players like the Wings do. You don't want to play teams that have a championship pedigree in the playoffs. They're ******* tough teams. Look no further than the last four teams in this postseason.

Guys, pivotal Game 4. If the Bruins win they are in firm control of the Finals. The last time a team came back from a 3-1 hole in the Finals was in the 40's I believe.

If Chicago wins they have home ice advantage again and a lot of momentum. What will we see in Game 4?

More of the same from most of game two and three with Boston dominating?

Or will Chicago play their best game of the Finals and put in max effort for all 60 minutes.

I say more of the same.

Score prediction 3-1 Boston for a 3-1 series lead.
