KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- It's a yearly tradition. Peyton Manning addresses the Pro Bowl players from both the AFC and NFC teams the night before the first practices begin.

Manning admitted at his talk late Tuesday night to the attentive players from this year's Pro Bowl squads that the "torch, or whatever it is that I do here on this night," eventually will be passed on to someone else, as the 36-year-old Denver Broncos quarterback gets closer to retirement.

He began with an impassioned plea for a return to a time when players cared about the NFL's all-star game and played at full speed. He finished with a series of zingers that left all in attendance -- including NFL executive of football operations Ray Anderson, NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith and this fly on the wall -- in stitches.

It was hard to tell if we were at a players' Pro Bowl meeting or a comedy club with a two-drink minimum. A sampling:

» "Everyone should play like Adrian Peterson. This guy does everything full speed. Pro Bowl -- promoting himself for MVP."

KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- Ripping off jokes like he was doing the opening monologue on "Saturday Night Live," Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was feeling it Tuesday evening. He was back where he belongs, in front of his peers, here at the Pro Bowl, right in his element.

Yet as Manning stood in front of a ballroom full of the NFL's best players (30 of whom, as he pointed out, are at the game for the first time), Manning wasn't just being funny during this welcome meeting. He also had a very sharp message.

"The past two years, the play in this game has been unacceptable," Manning said. "If it was a walkthrough, your coach would say it was a bad walkthrough. And that's why (the league) could try to cancel this game."

gotta say, it's a lot more fun reading about a Broncos QB making jokes, than making religious statements.

I don't know why anyone would have a problem with either one.

Most all athletes make religious statements.

Ray Lewis does all the time yet the mainstream media never makes a story about it. Why didnt anyone blast Brian Dawkins? He actually prayed very loudly on the sideline and during the game...ALOT more than Tebow did. Boxers do it, MMA fighters do it, Basketball players, Football players....it's just what people do.

But we all enjoy the jokes too.
