Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels addressed the media following Wednesday's afternoon practice, discussing topics that ranged from rookie RB Knowshon Moreno to backup QB Chris Simms. Check out the full transcript.

On whether his team is where it wants to be heading into the San Francisco game
“We’re where I think we could be by now. We’re going to find out a whole lot of what we need to work more on, on Friday night. I don’t know whether I’ve ever been a part of a first preseason game that’s gone exactly the way we wanted it to go. So I would expect there to be plenty of things for us to work on after Friday’s film.”

On how much he finds out in a game versus practice
“We’re not out there yelling and screaming at them behind the huddle. We can’t talk to them too much in-between plays. You really find out who knows kind of what’s going on and if they can handle their role and their responsibility without us being in their ear every play. You’re definitely going to find out some things about players that you may not have already figured out. But that’s preseason.”

On QB Chris Simms
“He’s doing fine. He’s getting better every day. He works extremely hard. He’s very diligent in the meeting room. He’s come out here and he’s had some really good days, and then he’s had some days where, you know, he’s struggled. But that’s kind of training camp. For a quarterback in this offense, that’s kind of how it goes. You put in a bunch of stuff one morning. You go out there and you may not be totally comfortable with all of it. But you get better at it as you go and Chris has worked really hard at it.”

On TE Tony Scheffler
“He can do a lot of things. Tony’s very versatile. He’s a guy, obviously, who’s got very good speed and hands in the passing game. He’s also shown a good solid toughness in the running game for us here in training camp. That will be important because when we’re in those two tight end sets and want to try to run the ball, he and (TE) Daniel (Graham) and our other tight ends are really going to have to do a good job on the edge too. So we ask him to do a lot in our offense, and Tony’s showed up and worked hard every day. He’s getting better just like everybody else is.”

On expectations for special teams in the San Francisco game
“It’s been one of our focal points here in training camp every day. We worked on it for 35 minutes today in practice. (There are) so many areas for us to improve in the kicking game from last year, and we need to improve in them. We weren’t very good last year in the kicking game in any phase. If we can improve in all four core phases and in our specialists’ performances, then it’s going to help our team dramatically. So we put a big emphasis on it, and we really want to see how this thing goes. We’re going to put the best that we’ve got out there Friday night early in the game and see where we can take it.”

On CB Alphonso Smith and WR Kenny McKinley returning punts
“We’re just getting everybody work. (WR) Eddie (Royal) was back there earlier this week and Kenny didn’t get as many earlier this week as Eddie did. So we had the two young kids split a little—well they’re all young—but the two younger kids split the reps today. So you’ll probably see all of them back there at some point in the preseason. But they need the work and they’re willing to go back there and catch them and they’re working hard to get better.”

On how much he anticipates playing RB Knowshon Moreno in Friday’s game
“Plenty. We’re telling everybody to be ready to go for a long time, and Knowshon’s in that group too. All our rookies and all our young kids need to play a lot. This is their first opportunity to play in a National Football League game and find out what it’s all about. There’s really no way to simulate the speed of the game in these kinds of practices and they’re going to find out an awful lot about competition and what this is all about. So he needs to play, just like all the rookies do, and we have no plans on taking those guys out too early.

On whether anyone won’t play/will be held out for precautions
“Nope. We’re going right now. We’re telling everybody to be ready to go.”

Nice read. I would love to see the starters play more than the first quarter to get themselves ready for the regular season.

I know it adds the risk of injury, but I think the extra "in game" reps will be extremely valuable.

I was watching a interview with Tom Brady awhile back and he said that he would like to get more during preseason games. He thinks that if had got more work last year that maybe he wouldn't of gotten injured.

I'm a fan of extra work in preseason. But the injury Brady sustained...the extra work in the preseason wouldn't have helped. That was just plain bad luck. But it shouldn't have created the new "Brady Rule". Next they will be putting flags on QBs.

I agree with you completely on that. Extra work would not have prevented that injury.

Anybody else find it a little odd that Josh kept calling the players kids?

I didn't find it odd...but I was like...WTF? You are a kid yourself! LOL

Of course I am older than any active NFL player so they are all kids to me. ;)

Brady's notion wasn't that his knee could have survived the hit if he'd been playing in the preseason, but that his football awareness would have been better with more practice, and more in "mid-season form".

Maybe but who's to say?

More than likely it would not have prevented the injury in my opinion.

Maybe but who's to say?

I think I'll leave that one up to him IF he said it I suspect he had his reasons..

no reason to doubt his word..

Not at all. He's speaking on behalf of the organization and he knows that. The "kids" reference is just a tag he's putting on the players. I'm sure he calls them "the players" and "the athletes" equally, it's just how he sees the separation.

I really like listening to what he says when he talks about how "we" were last year, even though he had no correlation to how the team was last year. I bet one of the first little things he noticed was how terrible we were in special teams.

I've been nothing but impressed with McGenius. The way he conducts the organization, the way he keeps things in the organization and doesn't divulge too much info to the media, because it isn't their business. The little things he works on to improve the foundation of the team, like added emphasis on the point of attack.

McDaniels is going to be a great coach in the NFL someday, I just hope he has the time he needs to fully implement his system so we don't lose our oppurtunity with him.

I also think he will do a great job IF the nit pickers do not get him first..

having someone talk about how he smack his lip or what he calls the players is well not focused on his job function and that is organizing and making this team into a winner again..

While lots of folks though mike walked on water I think we can all agree that there had been alot of slippage the past few years..

I do not think most folks want to see just how bad a team this has been and the ONLY thing getting us wins the past few years was great coaching 5-6 times a year..

how many of us expected a couple of trap games a year.. expected folks not something you should worry about unless it is one of the last games of the year and you have the playoff spot wrapped up.. .

We all forget that this team was the second to last team to lose to the LIONS and we got our asses kicked when we lost there..

Everything I have seen out of the KID coach has been good to great.. It make take a year or two to get back to the playoffs because WE were so bad the past couple of years but I like the direction we seem to be going..

I agree 100% with everything you said. McD clearly knows his stuff, and I think it will show with time. As fans, we are going to be critical of everything that happens on or off the field, which is good to a point, but we HAVE to sit back and let this guy do his job and turn OUR team around. No on should expect it to happen overnight because it just wont. Everytime I see a press conference transcript, my confidence in McD goes up, now its just time to see what the team has to offer. I'm getting excited to see what they've cooked up this off season!

It was a dirty hit, Pollard drove himself into Brady's knee, preseason had nothing to do with it.......

I watched that game, and it most certainly was NOT a dirty hit. Not in the least, not in the most, not at all. That was a fluke accident from a player that was simply continuing to play. Every player should have that kind of drive.

I agree. I saw no "dirty" hit at all. He was just going for the QB and it ended up being a wrong hit wrong time scenario. It was legal. Except now it isn't.
