The Ravens have a lengthy history of not just beating the Broncos, but whipping them pretty bad. This year Denver has its best chance of changing all that, because of Peyton Manning, but it won't be easy.

The Ravens defense is not the same as their 2000 SB defense, but it's still not bad. They are 23rd in yards allowed, which is bottom quarter of the league, BUT they are 8th in POINTS allowed -- which is still how they decide the games last time I checked!

So, their defense might not look all that great, but they manage to keep teams out of the end-zone and that's what counts.

Same thing for their offense. They are only 19th (below average) in yards per game, BUT, are 9th in scoring.

So, their offense, like their defense, isn't flashy, but it is efficient.

Denver is better on all statistical counts. 2nd in the league in total yards, 7th in passing yards/game, and third in scoring per game averaging 28.8 points a game. Defensively, the Broncos are better -- 3rd in yards allowed per game, 6th in both passing yards AND rushing yards allowed per game, and 8th in points allowed per game.

But, the Ravens are playing at home.

And they have only lost 2 home games the last 3 seasons -- both times to the Pittsburgh Steelers -- once in 2010 and just last week. Every other time they have won at home the last 24 games.

This is probably the hardest road game of the Broncos season. Even tougher place to win than New England or Atlanta. And the Broncos for some reason have NEVER matched up well against the Ravens. They've been losing to Baltimore virtually every time they played them over the last 12 seasons.

In 2010 they beat the Broncos 31-17.

In the infamous 2009 game they walloped the Broncos 31-7 in the game that ended the Broncos 6-0 run and started the slide that never ended until McMoron was fired a year later.

In 2006 the Broncos beat them 13-3 at home and in 2005 it was 12-10 in the Broncos 13-3 season.

In 2003 the Ravens beat the Broncos 26-6 with Jamal Lewis rushing for 134 yards on his way to 2,000 yards.

In 2002 they beat the Broncos 34-23.

In 2001 they beat the Broncos 20-13.

And of course in 2000, they crushed Denver in the wild-card game 21-3 on their way to their only SB Championship.

So, they are 6-2 over the last 12 years against the Broncos.

Denver has never beaten the Ravens in the playoffs.

In the last 5 years in the playoffs, the Ravens have:

2008: Crushed the Dolphins and Titans, but lost to the Steelers 23-14 in the AFC Championship Game.

2009: Beat the Patriots, but lost to Peyton Manning & the Colts 20-3 in the division round.

2010: Stomped the Chiefs, but lost 24-20 to the Steelers in the division round.

2011: Beat the Texans, but lost 23-20 to the Patriots at Foxborough in the AFC Championship.

So, they've won 5 post season games the last 5 years, but lost to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game the only times they got that far.

The keys for the Broncos is to beat the Ravens in this game so we won't have to play them or the Patriots on the road in the playoffs.

Denver has next to no chance of winning the SB if they have to go on the road in January and play in Baltimore or New England.

If they can get HOME games and only have to travel to Texas for the AFC Championship that makes it a LOT easier!

We match up better statistically. But lately, I'm worried about red zone offense. I'm hoping Hester is back and maybe he can help out. I think we had the ball first and goal inside the 5 and couldn't get in against Oakland. We can't always force some kind of mismatch and throw for a TD. At some point our line has to get a push and we need a power back running the ball. Hopefully it comes together. It's going to be a game to worry about. But it's going to be amazing if we win.

Peyton Manning versus Baltimore
W-L 7-2 305 ATT 192 COMP 62.9 COMP% 2443 yds 17 TDs 8 INTs 95.5 QBR

John Fox's first regular season game with Carolina was a win versus Baltimore.

I'm hoping for the best.
