Uni-watch dug up this photo:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8345/8185394554_633cebd78b_o.jpg

And is wondering when it was taken. He notes that the helmet on most databases doesn't fit with the pants and socks combo.

• When did the Broncos wear this uni combo? The white helmet logo and the brown pants are from different eras. And striped socks? If anyone knows more, do tell.

Unless back then they only had logos on one side of their helmet, the picture has been doctored because the guy making the tackle doesn't have a logo on the right side of his helmet.

Makes me think it was an exhibition game in 1962 when they might have been in between uniforms.

It's obviously a screen shot from a game of Madden.

I believe it's from the Sept. 7, 1962 season opener.

In the photo, San Diego quarterback John Hadl is tackled by Denver linebacker Jerry Stalcup (62), with middle linebacker Wahoo McDaniel (54) and defensive end Chuck Gavin (61) in pursuit.

I was going to say that #21 of the Chargers is John Hadl, the long-time Chargers quarterback and one of the few QBs to wear a number in the 20s. #54 of the Broncos does have the old silhouette bucking bronco from the early 60s on his helmet but his two mates do not.

So, my guess would be that this was an early (perhaps exhibition since it is at night) game as the team transitioned from the old Copper Bowl unis to the orange and blue look but maybe all the unis had not yet been delivered so some generics were used.

You gotta understand the Broncos of the very early years of the AFL were a shoestring operation that had to sometimes make do with whatever was on hand.

BTW, #54 does look like Wahoo McDaniel as I remember him. He was an Oklahoma native with some Indian heritage who later played that angle up more prominently as a professional wrestler when his AFL career came to an end.

.

Maybe the logos were only on the left side of their helmets.
Have to ask topscribe, he was probably there.

I wonder how much Stalcup was fined for grabbing Hadl's neck ?
