This is a thread where we attempt to identify movies that don't suck.

As such, Mastershake, Northman and MO are not allowed to post in here. Nor is anyone who has ever enjoyed a movie based on a comic book.

So please, no reviews of sequels. No musicals. No animated movies. No chick flicks. No sci-fi. No fantasy. This is for the cream of the crop only. There are other threads where you can go slumming for the latest Avengers 27 review, or to hear about Star Wars episode 13b.

So... Who'd like to get things kicked off?

Here is a list of confirmed great movies:

Pulp Fiction
Gangs of New York
American Beauty
The Departed
The Godfather
Goodfellas
Casino
Full Metal Jacket
Requiem for a Dream
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Rounders
The Big Lebowski
Wayne's World
There Will Be Blood
Forrest Gump
City of God
Gladiator
Braveheart
The Prestige
Mystic River
Dead Man Walking

I missed The Crow in the theater, although I wanted to see it badly.

I have attempted to watch it multiple times, and have fallen asleep every time. Seriously. I'm not saying its a bad movie, just somehow I haven't been able to make it through awake.

Lmao

Im quite the opposite. I saw it 3 times in the theater, ended up buying the VHS and then later the DVD.

I think I've now watched the most elitist, pretentious movie ever made. Certainly, of anything made the past 5-10 years.

Tree of Life. It stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

They filmed a large portion of this film in Bastrop, TX, which is where my Sister-in-law lives with her family, so I have kept an eye on it since the time they were filming it.

I watched it solely because of this fact. It's neat, I think to see places you know on the movie screen.

But good Lord, this movie is one for the pretentious Hollywood record book. If you can make it through the first 30-45 minutes you deserve an award.

Terrance Malick movies are the most pretentious pieces of crap I've ever seen. I walked out of Thin Red Line, and I never walk out of movies. He thinks that just leaving a camera in a low angle on a flower while people "act" in the background that its an artistic statement. I'll all for experimental movie-making, but his schtick gets old REAL QUICK.

Speaking of pretentious movies, I want someone to see this and report back to me:

I give Flight credit for not trying to glamorize addiction. And I give Denzel credit for being a good actor. But I thought it was sort of a miserable movie to watch.

The whole time you are rooting for him to get his shit together, and then at some point you realize that he's not going to and then the movie is over and you still feel shitty.

I'd watch the first 30 minutes again for the nudity and the crash scene, but I'd cut my losses after that.

I normally welcome non-standard/unhappy endings. I just felt like the movie was really painful to watch - and at some point the ending became pretty predictable.

Please add

The Prince of Tides
Legends of the Fall

Chef was a fun and thoroughly enjoyable film that I think you would like Buff.

Cedar Rapids is a small slice of life comedy that is a great movie.

I recently saw Nightcrawler and thought it was excellent.

I really want to see Whiplash, it looks phenomenal.

I mention these movies because I think they're all Buff type movies. Buff you have to watch O'Brother, why do you keep delaying this?

DBC was a totally different movie than I was expecting, and that is a good thing. Great movie.

You haven't seen O'Brother? You gotta see it.

There are a few but not 8. No Country, Fargo, TBL, True Grit, Barton Fink and maybe Millers Crossing could be argued. But they're all such great movies it's just a subjective discussion of taste unlike say arguing that Deep Blue Sea is a better film than Jaws which is just a fools errand.

O' Brother is a fantastic mix of comedy, action, adventure, cinematography, and music. IMHO it's the best mix of those ingredients of all the Coen Bros. films, which does not necessarily make it their best movie but it is definitely one of their most rewatchable. Maybe the best soundtrack of all time too.

O Brother is overrated, but it is a good movie. As for best soundtrack of all time, Guardians of The Galaxy and Dazed & Confused say hello.

Has anyone seen Brotherhood of the Wolf? Based on actual events that happened in the French countryside during the turn of the century? I thought that was a pretty descent film.

I agree that Godfather was a little slow, but great screenplay and overall good film.

What about Platoon?

I like O Brother, but compared to the rest of the Coens stuff it just seems like one of their less good ones.

The ones I think are definitely better than O Brother:

No Country for Old Men
Raising Arizona
A Serious Man
Big Lebowski
Blood Simple
Fargo
The Man Who Wasn't There
Burn After Reading
True Grit

Barton Fink is pretty much neck and neck with O Brother IMO. I've yet to see Inside Llewyn Davis and Miller's Crossing though.

Over the last few days I decided to watch the handful of Coen brothers movies i'd never seen, so here's my rankings:

1. No Country for Old Men
2. Raising Arizona
3. True Grit
4. A Serious Man
5. The Big Lebowski
6. Fargo
7. The Man Who Wasn't There
8. Burn After Reading
9. Intolerable Cruelty
10. Miller's Crossing
11. Inside Llewyn Davis
12. The Hudsucker Proxy
13. Barton Fink
14. O Brother Where Art Thou
15. Blood Simple
16. The Ladykillers

I think 1-6 are perfect and 7-15 are all varying degrees of good-great. Ladykillers is about as average as a movie could be though. Moral of the story is the Coens basically can't miss.

I would move the Hudsucker Proxy way up your list. I guess I need to see A Serious Man again. I remember liking it, but don't remember it being that great. IMO Fargo and Hudsucker are both better.

I found A Serious Man hilarious and nihilistic and bleak in the way only the Coen Bros can deliver. The religious aspects of it made it for me, gave it plenty of depth.

Fargo is great too. Everybody's got a different favorite Coen Brothers pick, that's what makes em so great.

Dallas Buyer's Club - 5/10. About an hour too long. Mildly entertaining. Aside from Depp giving a good performance - meh.
