Do we give the LB a look? I thought he played well in Tampa. He seemed to struggle in Tennessee and New Orleans a little.

I would, but the team won't. They signed Mays to a $4mil/yr contract. Mays isn't going anywhere. I will say though...Chris Collinsworth sure loves Joe Mays and Chris Harris

Does anyone know more about Barrett? Why Tampa got rid of him? Money?

Did the injury in Tennessee make him damaged goods?

...is a linebacker.

No, but seriously, man I'd rather have him lining up in orange and blue than Mays.

From now on the new measuring stick I will use for all potential linebackers is "Can you cover Danny Woodhead man to man on 3rd and 17?"

To be fair, I don't think Rudd's specialty is coverage. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember him being a run-stopping type.

If you can't man up against Woodhead on 3rd and 17 then you can't play LB in this league.

On 3rd and 17, fair enough. But Woodhead doesn't suck.

All this talk of white guys from Nebraska is probably getting you excited.

Im not sure that contract will be enough to save him, if he continues to flop like a beached carp.

Ive been wrong before though.

To be brutally honest, I don't think Mays HAS a specialty. I'd take Rudd or anyone else over him. As to contracts, last I heard we had $10 mil in cap space; as much as I'd hate to pay Mays $4 mil to ride the bench, I hate paying that to put him on the field even more. Depending on the severity of Brooking and Irvings concussions, it might be worth signing Rudd just so we aren't totally naked at Mike.

I agree. And for anyone wondering, Ruud's contract for this season was $825k. He seem worth it to me.

the pats attacked us when we went to 5 DEBs; they did it with the RUN.
opponents will follow that blue-print.
we need a SAFETY THAt can COVER and tackle.
one that has great instincts, can sniff out a pl;ay, and anticipate the play before it happens. somebody exactly like champ, only it cant be champ.
he is too buisy chasing decoys to actually get involved in the defense of the play !
champ shut down brandon lloyd, woohoo!
how did that work out for us?

I will slightly agree with Zam. When you are facing a team that utilizes the TE and slot 90% of the time...why keep your best cover guy glued to the deep threat that has been picking up garbage stats?

I rarely agree with going after veteran players like Ruud but I would seriously consider taking a chance on him.

I agree with the premise but I wouldn't put him on Gronk I would have him covering Welker.

I would have made an adjustment, but I, as I said, would not have taken Champ off Lloyd.

Adams can cover and tackle, but he's only one guy and Moore can't cover. I don't know why we signed Leonhard if we're just going to leave Moore out there blowing coverages anyway. He is to the secondary what Mays is to the linebacking corps: He can't cover and is often out of position, but thinks it doesn't matter because he totally LEVELS guys on the rare occasion he makes a play. If this were "how hard can you ram a moving target?" his hits and misses would make him an average player, but since it's football he's a bad player gunning for a suspension like Mays got.

If we sell out on the pass with extra DBs on 3rd and long we get beat by the run; if we sell out on the run with 2 Sams we get beat by the pass. THIS IS LITERALLY WHY THE MLB WAS INVENTED! Once unlimited substitution replaced iron man two-way players with specialists teams needed a guy who excelled at run-stopping AND coverage AND threw in the occasional sack for good measure. If a LB is weak in coverage, he's a Sam; if he's weak against the run, he's a Will: Mikes MUST do both well.

This isn't rocket science, which is fortunate; very few aerospace engineers have made an NFL roster, though the Chargers had one at center a few years ago, and a former Texans cheerleader now works for NASA. That last part has nothing to do with MLBs, I just think it's really cool: http://www.sciencecheerleader.com/2010/07/meet-summer-pro-cheerleader-turned-nasa-aerospace-engineer/

Texans reacting quickly to fill the void left by Cushing's injury - not that Ruud can replace Cushing but he was the best option out there.

Honestly, Kubes, as long as the Broncos and Texans are my favorite teams, in that order, I don't know whether to love or hate you, man.... More seriously though, soon as I saw Cushing was down my heart was in my throat; that he's out for the year confirmed my worst fears. Hopefully he's 100% next year (and we tie Houston in the regular season then don't face them again till the Conference Championship) and Rudd fills the big gap in the mean time.
