I posted that the chart would be released today. I got it from the following blog.

Open For Business
August 6th, 2009 - 12:00am by mike_rice

The footballs will be flying Thursday night at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The Big House will be open for business again.

The Broncos will hold their evening practice at INVESCO Field at Mile High. I’m not sure how long it has been since they have held a training camp practice there, but it seems like it has been a while.

“We are all looking forward to going down there,” Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels said. “Usually during this time of training camp, you get rejuvenated by going down there, putting the lights on and being in the stadium. It is a fun thing for all of us. Everybody is looking forward to it, and I hope there is a good turnout. I hope we put on a good show.”

McDaniels said the Broncos will do a lot of work making this workout seem like a game.

“(There will be) a lot of teamwork (and) coaches off of the field in the booth, so we are going to simulate, as much as we can, a game-type setting and scenario for our players and staff because we haven’t done this together yet. We don’t want the first time that it happens to be in San Francisco. (There are) a lot of exciting things to go into practice tomorrow. There will be some live contact and hitting”

For rookies and veterans alike, Thursday night’s practice at INVESCO Field will mark another step towards the regular season. It will be a new experience for quarterback Chris Simms, who hasn’t yet gone through a practice in his team’s stadium before.

“In Tampa, we would maybe during OTAs or minicamp go to the (stadium),” Simms said. “But to go there tomorrow night under the lights a little bit, that’s going to be fun. I think the guys are going to be real excited to do that.”

Second-year wide receiver Eddie Royal is also among those looking forward to the big show at INVESCO.

“Any time you go in that stadium you get a little more excitement,” Royal said. “It’s going to be great. I can’t wait to get out there.”

Many of the Broncos’ rookies are also eager to get on the home field. Cornerback Alphonso Smith is ready.

“I’m pretty excited,” Smith admitted. “I’ve only been there once and that was for Fan Fest. I can’t speak for everyone but for me it’ll be a pretty exciting practice.”

Rookie safety Darcel McBath agrees.

“I’m excited to get over there and actually get a little (action) going,” McBath said.

Hope you can be on hand for the event. It should be great. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and practice will start at 6 p.m. Parking is free.

The Broncos will release their first depth chart on Monday. I’ll have thoughts on that next week. Thanks for reading and have a great weekend.

Best,
Mike

Thanks for the feedback. I've been waiting for this depth chart for months! No doubt in my mind it will change before the Cinci game but it would be nice to see where some of these guys stand as of now and how thier play in preseason games and the remaining camp affects that.

I'm pretty sure McDaniels described the depth chart as "fluid". And given the amount of players subbing in on the first team, I'd call that description accurate.

The depth chart will be interesting to look at - particularly at DE and OLB.

I wonder if McDaniels will send any "messages" by ranking players either surprisingly low or surprisingly high, as a motivational tool. That's a hard one to read, but I do remember a few years ago when everyone was surprised by Mike Bell at the top of the depth chart at RB. So I wonder if "new coach" has any tricks up his sleeve like "old coach" did.

True, also interesting to see the recent switch of Mario Haggin to OLB after ready how successful he has been on up the middle blitzes. Seems to indicate he is one of the better blitzing LB's on our roster.

Re: Mario Haggan

His rise up the depth chart is surprising. I looked up his history on the team roster page, and I didn't even remember he was with the team for half the season last year. Another example of a good special teams player that has a chance to be a productive rotational guy on defense.

I don't know whether to be excited that the coaches are being creative and guys are stepping up to the challenge, or to be scared to death that the guy playing first string OLB (yeah I know, it's still camp) has seven years of mostly Special Teams experience to draw upon.

Yeah that's my concern as well. When Haggan stands out I don't know if that means he is better suited for that scheme or our talent level is so weak a journeyman ST player can look like stud. Hopefully it's Haggan making the most of the scheme change and opportunity and not the lack of skill by our LB's. I feel better about this years defense BUT it is early. I can't wait for Friday night game to get a better feel fr what we have. It's only a preseason game but I'm going to be focused on teh players like it's a play off game, LOL!

I'll be attending the Friday game in person. Traveling up to the Bay Area with my wife. Her son is a Niner's fan and has a group of six season tickets he owns with some others. Pretty decent end zone seats. So I'm stoked to see my Broncos.

Hmm, a few interesting things there.

First of all, how the HELL is Jordan ahead of Hillis? That contradicts everything I have read about the two during camp.

Also very interesting that Gaffney is ahead of Marshall. Probably just because Marshall hasn't practiced in a week but still pretty interesting.

Yeah that stood out for me too. Haggan now a starting OLB, C. Baker looks like he is closing in on the NT spot and C. Powell being slated as the third string NT, feel he would be better at DE. Thomas at DE 2nd string.

as Josh has stated the depth chart will be very fluid.

I also noticed the gaffney ahead of marshall and am surprised at Hillis really being number 4 on the RB list..

but I see Hillis as the equivalent to what Faulk did in NE..

Powell is a plugger he IIRC lead the college ranks in least yards allowed from scrimmage as a DT.. I think we have otehrs that would be better at DE..

I think that baker will be that stud NT we are looking for but may not see a starter slot this year.. he is just about the right size may need to put on 10-15 pounds of muscle and then he would be a real load to move..

Well, I know it's still early, but I'm starting to believe we can honestly say goodbye to the following:

Ryan Torain
Jarvis Moss
Josh Barrett

The following IMHO are disappointments and won't be with the organization when future depth is added;

Marcus Thomas
Carlton Powell
Tim Crowder

Maybe not necesarily disappointments but possibly out of system players

I firmly believe this will be his last season ith Denver regardless, and although it isn't going to help Denver at all this year the thought of him not being a big factor doesn't really concern me.

Also notice Royal is nowhere on the KR or PR depth

I think Barrett will make the squad for special teams purposes and nickle packages.

He is our FB, he will never with the exception of major injuries ever be our RB. I cannot believe you guys even considered this.

I've heard nothing but good things about Gaffney. Might not be Marshall's talent level, but he's been there for all the workouts, he catches everything coming his way...and he's minus the headcase factor. Doesn't it just seem a bit weird to anyone else that Marshall didn't want to be here and he pulls a hammy a day into camp. Coinkidink? I think not.

Although I agree with you to an extent, something's wrong when you're FB is a better runner with the football than you're actual RB's.

He'll still get his carries at RB, they just aren't going to list him high on the list when he's already guaranteed #1 at FB. Perhaps a way of keeping another guy on the roster.

Moreno will be better. And he is to valuable of a blocker, short yardage, and reciever to risk as your #1 back. If he went down we would be worse off than if any of the RB's went down.

I would be surprised if we lost Powell or Thomas and Barret.. unless we pick up something better from training camp cuts .. none of those 3 have a salary issue and all have a lot of potential..

I have heard barrett's name used alot in a positive way especially now with Dawkins not getting reps..

I highly doubt it. In fact, i guarantee you that crowder makes the team.

Maybe torian- but i doubt it (because i think we hold 5 RB including hillis)
Barrett is not getting cut, he will stay i am sure of it. Also THomas and Crowder are guaranteed to make the team. I didnt see much of powell, but i doubt they would cut him since he has never played yet and is essentially a rookie.

I haven't heard many good things about Lamont Jordan; surprised to see he's 2nd.

PN- made a good comment to me at TC. Jordan has been used constantly in goaline. And while i agree he hasnt looked good (even though i like him) he has always gotten reps there at goaline. It would be a HUGE waste of time and reps for us to cut him with all the work he has gotten there. So while he might not have looked great to us, maybe in preseason he will throw that weight around in goaline and show us why i liked him so much in the past......

then again maybe not.

Remember JMD said the depth chart is fluid and will change early and often.

I have only been to 3 TC. But barrett was on the field often. As a gunner on ST, and a punt blocker, at saftey with the #2 mostly, but also some work with the #1s, aswell as lining up at nickle or LB with the #1s. He is used a lot. i just dont see him getting the axe.

Torian, i only got to see him run once, and it was little, but i liked his explosion through the hole. He definitley explodes faster then the other RBs. I have seen, but after that, i have no clue. So he might be on the outs.

But as i said earlier, i think we keep 5 rb.

hillis

torain
