Report: Peyton Manning part of group trying to buy NBA Grizzlies

Peyton Manning had a chance at a stake in a Tennessee pro team this offseason, before turning down the Titans.

But now he’s going to get another shot to sit in the owner’s box, as he’s agreed to become a limited partner of a bid to buy the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies, according to a report by Kyle Veazey of the Memphis Commerical Appeal.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—A person familiar with the deal says NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and his wife, Ashley, and former NBA player Penny Hardaway have agreed to join the group of minority owners for the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Mannings and Hardaway join a minority group that includes singer and actor Justin Timberlake and a couple Memphis businessmen, the person told The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because prospective buyer Robert J. Pera's purchase of the Grizzlies is pending approval by the NBA.

It's going to be interesting to see if the league says anything about this. When Kroenke bought the Rams, he had to give up "ownership" to his son of the Avs and Nuggets because NFL rules state you can't own a professional sports team in a different town.

Now, a player in a management group for another sport in a different town from where he plays...

I doubt there's anything wrong with it, but it's interesting.

Ashley Manning, wife of a certain Broncos quarterback, has applied to become minority owner of the NBA Memphis Grizzlies.

Manning grew up in Memphis and wants to make sure the franchise stays in her hometown. The Grizzlies have been in Memphis since relocating from Vancouver in 2001.

"I am proud of Ashley as she pursues this opportunity with the Memphis Grizzlies," Peyton Manning said in a statement.
