Is there any way, since we're on a better server now, that we can get bigger avatar limits?

Let me do some research. Graphics, especially avatars because they are stored on the server, one of the main causes of server loads and slowdowns. That's why Orangemane completely turned off avatars a while back, because they were struggling with a slow server.

With our current number of members, I don't think increasing the size would be an issue. If/When we have more people logging in, then larger avatars could cause a problem, which would mean we might hav to go back to smaller ones.

I'm about to head out of town on business for a week, but when I get back I'll look into it, and see what is recommended by the vBulletin folks.

Personally, I would rather people be allowed to have bigger avatars than sigs. I know big sigs can clog up bandwidth as well.

Thanks for looking in to it though, when you get a chance.

Sigs and avatars are different in that sigs only effect the client (you, me,individual users' computers), where avatars effect the server (because they are stored on the server) and the client.

What do they need to be now? Jpg's? I will check and see if this is a server setting.

By default (as it is set), animated avatars are allowed. The only restriction is that they are 100x100 or smaller in size and less than 18,000 bytes

As far as I know, the only thing preventing it is the size.

I'll do some research and see what the server implications are of increasing the allowed size of avatars.

The limit is currently set to 18k.

The reason for this is that text is fairly easy for the server to process, hence not creating much server load, even as the forum, posts and members grow. Graphics, are much more CPU and ram intensive, so they recommend leaving the limits low. However, since I currently have way more processing power and ram than we need, it might be fine to increase the size. I just don't want to find ourselves in the boat that the Mane has been in several times. Closing the forum to all non-members, not allowing new registrations, turning off avatars, all because the server was overloaded. I am trying to give as many features as possible (more PMs then mane, etc.), but still keep us in good shape for growth.

I'll research this, and increase it if at all possible.

I would rather have a smaller PM box and make the threads not viewable to non-members and have bigger avatars....not by much, I mean I'm not saying we need to be able to have 80k avatars, but 40k would be nice.

Does it help you if we delete old messages in the PM box? versus just letting them sit there forever?

Ok, I have upped the limits.

The new max avatar size is 175x175 and 100 KB. You should be able to do plenty with the new higher limit.
