If there is safety in numbers, the Broncos decided Sunday to pump up the number of safeties in the defensive formation to find some defensive impact.
It wasn't quite the all-in, everybody-to-the-quarterback rush scheme former Broncos defense coordinator Larry Coyer used to drop on the game's uber-quarterbacks from time to time. Coyer once rushed Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will all 11 defenders. Yet it was the most aggressive the Broncos have been this season.
Against the Raiders, defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio worked a seven-defensive back look into the regular rotation. It added cornerback Chris Harris, the team's usual addition in the nickel package, as the fifth defensive back to go with safeties David Bruton and Jim Leonhard as the sixth and seventh defensive backs.
