View Full Version : Who Can We Stash...

We've all got our favorites for various reasons but the truth remains-at some point in the relatively near future we've got to get this down to a 53 man roster. I'm curious, if we all step away from whichever player story we've personally attached to, what does it make sense for the FO to do stratigically in terms of keeping as many players as possible for the long run.

My question: who meets the following profile in terms of BOTH CHARACTERISTICS?

1) Solid player with room for development that we'd like to keep around
2) Under the radar enough to make it to the practice squad

As I see it, the list is relatively small and I think this should be a large part of the deciding factor for cuts and people making the team.

So, who can we successfully stash on the practice squad without them bing snagged by another team?

Blake Schlueter, Nate Swift, Richard Quinn, Seth Olsen, Everett Pedescleaux, Rulon Davis, Britton Colquitt, Chris Baker.

That would be my guess at the Practice Squad.

No way...Olsen and Quinn will be on the 53 man roster.

Who are you cutting to get that done?

Yeah, my sense is Quinn gets snapped up in a heartbeat. I read a bunch after the draft that although the second round was maybe a reach, other teams had him rated at a similar level.

Also, Baker seems like a rare commodity as a stout NT type, don't see him making it through either though I suppose it's a possibility.

I feel like Olsen could potentially make it through.

P.S. with that PS, I think the depth would look something along the lines of:
QB - Orton, Simms, Brandstater
RB - Moreno, Buckhalter, Torain/Jordan
FB - Hillis, Larson
WR - Marshall, Gaffney, McKinley
WR - Royal, Stokley, Lloyd
TE - Scheffler, Graham
T - Clady, Polumbus
G - Hamilton, McChesney
C - Wiegman, Lichtensteiger
G - Kuper, Erickson
T - Harris, Oldenburg

DE - Thomas, Clemons
NT - Fields, Baker
DE - Peterson, Powell
OLB - Ayers, Dumervil
ILB - Davis, Haggan
ILB - Williams, Woodyard
OLB - Reid, Moss, Crowder
CB - Bailey, Smith
CB - Goodman, Williams
FS - Dawkins, Bruton, McBath
SS - Hill, Barrett

K - Prater
P - Kern
LS - Paxton

Quinn is a lock for make the 53 man roster. You don't spend 2nd round picks on players and set them free for any team to sign. There is a ZERO percent chance of Quinn being on the practice squad. However, Olsen is a possibility though.

What about Brandy on the PS? Was Shanny an anomaly in only keeping two active QBs?

Why not stash Brandy and free up a roster spot? I doubt anyone picks him up and he can still be called up at any time if needed.

I like this pretty well. I guess I'd maybe move Brandy to PS and cut Jordan--I'd like to see room for Vernon Fox and maybe the change of pace back whose name I'm blanking on at the moment. Also a lot of talk of Moss not making the cut.

Darius Walker is the only other running back listed.

Don't think Fox will make it. In that Depth, its either Torain or Jordan, not both.

Gotcha. And thanks, yeah, Walker is the name that was escaping me. I haven't seen anything myself but have liked some of the things I've read. It seems like with Knowshon/Bucky/Torain/Hillis we've got strong runners but could use a change of pace guy.

I dont know, but Olsen is the 2nd string guard and has already been playing with the 1st team while Weigs is out.

And we gave up way too much for Quinn to risk another team taking him. Quinn wouldnt last on the PS.

Here is what I come up with for 53 players...unless I am missing people

OT: Clady, Harris, Polumbus
G: Kuper, Olsen
C/G: Hamilton, Licht
C: Weigs
QB: Orton, Simms, Brands
RB: Buck, Moreno, Hillis, Torain
WR: Marsh, Stokes, Royal, Gaffney, McKinley, Jackson
TE: Graham, Scheff, Quinn

That is 24 players

DL: McBean, Fields, Thomas, Peterson, Powell, Clemons
OLB: Reid, Ayers, Doom Crowder
ILB: DJ, Haggan, Davis, WW, Larsen
CB: Champ, Goodman, Phonz, JMFW, Bell
S: Dawk, Hill, Bruton, McBath, Barrett, Fox

That is 26 players

K: Prater
P: Kern
LS: Paxton

53 players total.

How many guys can we put on the PS? 8 right?

I would say Baker and Swift are almost definites...also Pedescleaux...then after that I dunno

yea, there's zero chance they traded up to take quinn only to put him on the practice squad-- that's not happening!

brandstater, OTOH, is a good candidate-- so is schluter, pedescleaux, nate swift, lee robinson, dj johnson, tony carter, and possibly kenny mckinley or chris baker. . . .

I agree with those saying Quinn is a lock. McD is not going to cut him or risk him on the practice squad, after moving up to get him and taking so much heat. So, he is on the roster or on IR, IMO.

Also, if it was Shanny, he would put Brandstater on the practice squad, but I don't know if McD will do that.

Nope, I think McD is willing to have Brandstater take up a roster spot so he can learn on the sidelines.
