Whether between the hash marks or around the first-round bargaining tables, the Broncos are counting on Knowshon Moreno to break free.

The NFL has a holdout logjam among players taken in the first round of the draft. No. 8 pick Eugene Monroe, No. 9 B.J. Raji, No. 10 Michael Crabtree, No. 11 Aaron Maybin and No. 12 Moreno are still unsigned.

If Moreno waited for those ahead of him to reach agreements to slot in his contract, the Broncos may not get their new running back for at least another week. Negotiations for the Nos. 8-11 picks seem to be making no progress.

So the Broncos and Moreno's agents have left the group and independently engaged in intense negotiations. The next 24 hours are expected to be critical to an agreement.

"We are working into the wee hours of the morning," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said.

Moreno was still in Georgia as of Wednesday night as his holdout reached Day 6. Even if an agreement on a five-year contract is reached today, Moreno would not be available for the team's "live" practice tonight at Invesco Field at Mile High.

I don't see any reason for Moreno to wait. The 13th overall pick (Orakpo) is signed so that should provide a good gauge as what his contract should look like.

Three things they've added to this Broncos update:

Dawkins update.

Broncos safety Brian Dawkins is expected to be sidelined until at least Sunday afternoon's practice after suffering what appeared to be a right-hand injury Tuesday.

"It's certainly not anything devastating, but I am not going to go into details about what it is," McDaniels said.

There is also the memorial service for Dawkins' longtime defensive coordinator, Jim Johnson, in Philadelphia on Friday. The Broncos are off Saturday.

Marshall update.

It is becoming increasingly unlikely that wide receiver Brandon Marshall will play in the Broncos' preseason opener Aug. 14 in San Francisco. He has missed the past six training camp workouts with a leg injury that may have been related to his offseason hip surgery.

Marshall is scheduled for trial one week from today in Atlanta on misdemeanor battery charges stemming from a March 4, 2008, incident with Rasheedah Watley, his former girlfriend.

If Marshall goes forward with the scheduled one-day trial, his case will be ruled on by a six-person jury in a state courtroom in Atlanta. Marshall is represented by Denver attorney Harvey Steinberg.

Footnotes.

At the urging of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the Broncos began allowing media to Twitter and text during practice Wednesday. That type of communication will cease during the regular season, because all workouts will be closed. . . .

Rulon Davis, an undrafted rookie defensive end who fought in the war in Iraq, did not participate in either practice Wednesday. . . .

A little encouragement for defensive tackle Marcus Thomas: Having started 20 consecutive games dating to 2007, Thomas has been well down on the depth chart as he struggles to find a fit in the Broncos' new 3-4 system. However, Thomas was on the first-team goal line defense Wednesday. "Hopefully, I can stay on it because I didn't do too well in there today," he said. "I need to keep working hard so I can make first-team everything."

The Broncos are "getting close" to signing Knowshon Moreno to a five-year deal with at least $12.5 million in gurarantees.
"Significant progress" has been made of late, and Moreno is expected to agree to a deal with a maximum value in excess of $22 million. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal should be finalized as soon as Thursday night. Aug. 6 - 7:18 pm et

Crabtree would be a moron to sit out...he would be drafted even later next year and would get less money that what he would get this year.

No one in their right mind would pick him in the top 10 after he held out the previous year and hasn't played competitive football in a year.
