Unfortunately, he's expected to be re-signed next week.

Hanie was released so his $1 million base salary would not be guaranteed. The Broncos also avoided paying him a $250,000 bonus for making the active game day roster. Don’t be surprised if Hanie is re-signed by the Broncos on Tuesday.

Potential roster moves. NFL teams often take advantage of a provision in the collective bargaining agreement just before the season opener to save a little guaranteed salary. By league rules, all vested players ( players with four or more seasons accrued in the league) on the roster for the regular-season opener have their base salaries guaranteed.

So, at times, teams will release one or more of those veteran players who are not expected to play in the game Sunday, and then re-sign them Monday to lift the guarantee.

For the Broncos, Caleb Hanie, who has worked as the No. 3 quarterback this week, and linebacker Keith Brooking fit the profile. Hanie is in his fifth season, Brooking his 14th.

Do you think Hanie is going to be loyal to Elway after this? I think he will have 250 thousand reasons to hate the Broncos. We do not need the cancer on the team.

He's a veteran player, one that understands the business and understands it's HIS job to make himself valuable, not Elway's job. Why would he be a "cancer"?

Do we need Hanie to be "loyal?" Hanie knows that he does this, or be cut. Making what he will be making is more than making zero. If you are asked to do something to save cap space for the team, and you know you aren't exactly a "integral" player.... you do it. No questions asked. If you don't like it, eh... so what? Hanie is in no need to negotiate, bargain, or bitch.

None of us know if this was already discussed with Hanie, and if he was ok with it. Possibly it was discussed with him before the cuts were made. We don't know.

"To make room on the 53-man roster for defensive tackle Sealver Siliga, the Denver Broncos released backup quarterback Caleb Hanie, the team announced Saturday."

I question whether the Broncos are trying to save salary money when they are sitting $12 million under the salary cap right now. Could be though.

Its always saving money if you feel you are overpaying a player.

That's true but saving 1 million seems pretty insignificant to me when it comes to your 2nd string QB in a situation like the broncos are in. I never thought for a second the Broncos wouldn't keep 3 QBs on the roster so maybe they will resign him. They certainly don't expect any other team to swoop in and steal him away.

I'm not sure that they're actually saving any money at this point. Instead, they're just making sure his contract isn't guaranteed. I imagine they'll pay him the same salary, it just won't be guaranteed.

His full contract wasn't guaranteed and nothing was paid upfront. They saved $1,250,000 but like I said, that seems insignificant when you're talking about your supposed 2nd string QB and the guy sitting in the wings if your star QB coming off neck surgery goes down again.

"Hanie's release also contained a financial element. Signed to a two-year, $2.9 million contract in early April, Hanie's contract contained no guaranteed money. In lieu of a signing bonus, Hanie was scheduled to receive $1 million in fully guaranteed money and receive a $250,000 roster bonus if he were on the 53-man roster in Week 1, a scenario the Broncos avoided with Saturday's release.

Hopefully, we've scanned the waiver wire and found a better back-up sitting on a couch somewhere. Why not Brett Favre? He's probably better than Hanie, even today.

Guess we will see what happens during the week.

Personally I don't think they will bring him back. I think they gave it more thought and decided 2 QBs were enough and wanted to protect Siliga on the active roster.

John and John didn't let me in on the plans though when I had them over for dinner last night :(

I'm not sure, I read that Goodell can reinstate them at any time, I also read that he can only do so if he can prove they actually intended to cause injury to a certain player. Awfully difficult to prove intent, but who knows.

His contract would become fully guaranteed if he was on the 53 man roster week one.

So, the Broncos released him to avoid guaranteeing his contract. They probably will resign him Tuesday at the same 1 million salary, it jut won't be guaranteed. So the "savings" are the 250k bonus, and not guaranteeing his 1 million salary.

Only if they don't resign him at all will they save 1.25 million.

Don't disagree, BUT we don't have #3 on the practice squad. Seems like that would be a little risky...

I see no reason to think Hanie is gone for good. If they were going to cut him for good they could have done so before cutting Weber. This is why I believe Hanie will be back. It makes no sense to cut him now instead of before unless it is just to save the money.

The most intersting thing I saw in that article is that it said he was running with the 3rd team. Which must mean Brock was running the 2's.

Could very well have been in anticipation of him being cut - it's been reported they cut him just to make his contract non-guaranteed. They needed to make sure Oz was ready for this game.

Who knows though...

bingo, eiother they bring him back or sign another QB because with just 2 QBs on the roster they have nobody to run the third eam
If they dump him completely they are going to look like idiots letting webber go !
could there be a veteran signing after game one?
it would be a shrewd financial move, something to applaud for a team that paid over a million dollars to a defensive back who did n ot make the final 53 !

They're talking about it on the fan and I think it needs mentioning. Elway has paid Hanie his $250,000 signing bonus even though they didn't have to. It has something to do with cutting him before the opener, but basically the Broncos could have had him and not had to pony up the 1/4 Mil, but being the classy and smart organization that we are we paid him anyway.

Now, I know there are a lot of people who have no use for Hanie and are probably thinking "what a waste of money" but what I love about this is the image it portrays to players around the league. Other players have to see the Broncos as a franchise, under Elway, that won't screw players over. These kind of moves, combined with things like letting Orton go so he could get some starts for someone at the end of the year last year do wonders for our image within player's circles.

It's a small thing but may help us sign FAs in the future. If the money is equal a FA may just look at how Elway and the FO treats players and choose us because of it.

Cool move Mr. Elway, for Hanie and just maybe the entire organization.
