There are some gray-around-the-ears scouts who will tell you when they are hunting for safeties from time to time, they like to see those who are former cornerbacks. The idea being if they were once fast enough to at least start some games in college at corner, they should be fast enough to play safety in the NFL.

Enter Steven Darcel McBath, Broncos rookie safety.

McBath, who goes by Darcel, was a cornerback at Texas Tech before moving to safety, where he eventually was an all-Big 12 pick in 2008 when he finished with seven interceptions.

McBath also is a former all-district basketball player at Gainesville (Texas) High School — a school an hour north of Dallas that has an enrollment of just over 800. The school won the state Class 3A football title in his senior year.

McBath was a late riser on the draft boards this past April, eventually moving himself to the second round for most teams, which is where the Broncos snagged him. Teams liked how he always seemed to be the guy getting people in the right places before the snap in the Red Raiders' defense.
