The Oakland A's traded outfielder Matt Holliday to the St. Louis Cardinals today, according to multiple major league sources.

The A's received Cardinals' top prospect Brett Wallace, a slugging Triple-A third baseman, pitcher Clayton Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson. Holliday increased his trade value with his recent surge at the plate. He has raised his average to .287 and earlier this week had a six-RBI game. If Holliday can make it to Philadelphia, he will play tonight, and is expected to hit cleanup behind Albert Pujols.

When the possibility of going to St. Louis arose recently, Holliday told The Denver Post, "That would be sweet."

Holliday has always hit well in St. Louis, and should benefit from a return to the National League.

The Rockies traded Holliday to Oakland last November after contract extension talks never progressed. The Cardinal tried to get him then, but lost out to the A's, who shipped the Rockies' closer Huston Street, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Triple-A pitcher Greg Smith. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has actively campaigned for Holliday for months.

Rasmus, Ankiel, Holliday, Ramirez, DeRosa; Cards have a pretty strong line up with the 1-2 pitching punch of Carpenter/Wanwright, Central shifts in STL's favor.
