Less than a week before the Broncos' rookies report to training camp, nine rookies remain unsigned.

You had better believe general manager Brian Xanders and salary cap guru Mike Bluem will be busy this week.

Although it's not unusual for the Broncos to haggle over final-day negotiations with drafted rookies, it's rare for the team to deal with as many as five players — running back Knowshon Moreno, linebacker Robert Ayers, cornerback Alphonso Smith, safety Darcel McBath and tight end Richard Quinn — who were selected in the top two rounds.

The Broncos' only signed draft pick is center Blake Schlueter, a seventh-round selection who received a four-year deal that included a $57,285 signing bonus.

Most rookie deals are slotted with built-in increases of 8 to 10 percent for first- and second-round draft picks and 3 to 5 percent for players selected the second day of the draft. But one reason the Broncos haven't finalized more contracts is their insistence on injury protection.

Xanders brought a two-year split formula to the Broncos last year. This means if a player winds up on injured reserve at any point in his first two seasons, he would receive a smaller salary.

Schlueter, for instance, will draw the $310,000 and $395,000 salary minimums in his first two seasons, but $210,000 and $240,000, respectively, in the event he winds up on injured reserve.

Although many agents balk at the full, two-year split concept, it has become fashionable throughout the NFL this year. In return for the two-year splits, Xanders is offering escalators that could allow Schlueter to draw a $1.308 million salary instead of $565,000 in his fourth season of 2012 if he plays 35 percent of the snaps in any two of his first three seasons.

Based on their respective draft slots and typical increases, here is an estimate of the financial guarantee for the Broncos' nine remaining unsigned draft picks: Moreno ($12.3 million), Ayers ($9.45 million), Smith ($2.8 million), McBath ($1.6 million), Quinn ($910,000), safety David Bruton ($478,000), guard Seth Olsen ($410,000), receiver Kenny McKinley ($153,000) and quarterback Tom Brandstater ($127,000).

This really is a bad sign. One of the reason the Cardnials struggled for so many years is that they could not get their 1st rounders signed in advance of training camp. I hope that this is not a pattern for Devner in years to come.

Its time for Pat to sell the team. It was valued at a billion dollars by Forbes not long ago. Not signing almost all of our draft picks, putting ads on their practice uniforms, and constantly kvetching about the economics of the NFL makes it apparent that Pat should sell to someone who can give the fans what they deserve.

yes. great logic. sell the team because our draft picks aren't signed yet - forgetting this regularly happened under shanahan's time here - and because an owner is trying to create added revenue by doing something that affects no fan - and is becoming a common NFL practice.

please. the sky hasn't fallen. armageddon isn't here. we're all just bored and paying WAY too much attention to minutia.

You mean a product on the field that will resemble a team and not a mediocre collection of stiffs that are coached by the HC's "friends" and favorites?

I'm just guessing here that almost none of the Number 1 choices have been signed NFL wide.. most agents will not OK a contract till they know what the guys under neath his players has signed..

once they get the top 7-8 signed most of the rest fall like dominos...

and frankly it is not like thise team has not had full particapation in OTA and Mini camps and those players have done it all except hit..

If a few days are missed by anyone BUT marshall it will be OK.. he is the only one that needs to be here for every minute..

Funny that you use those terms, considering we ended up trading out stud QB because the newest HC wanted to sign his friend and favorite.

Or maybe he merely entertained the idea because our stud QB got a little sand in his **edit** when the other coach was fired and McD looked at a potential alternantive.

We'll never know

I think the delay league wide is probably due to the expected uncapped season next year. I bet a lot of the agents are acting like it's a foregone conclusion that there won't be a new CBA and the teams are probably trying to negotiate on the premise that there will be a CBA. Of course, the Broncos insisting on injury protection is a factor as well, but I think perhaps the uncertainty of the CBA is a bigger factor.

Yea, this is a widespread thoughout the league. I havent seen a lot of signings thus far so Denver is hardly the only one in this boat.

If you check this (http://walterfootball.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10264) out you can see who is signed and who isn't.

It looks like we are behind on the late rounders but fine for the first and second rounders.

I realize we are in a later time zone than they are and it is a bit more laid back here but now its the time to get things going..

meh. . . every year, people complain about draft picks not being signed, and every year they eventually get signed and into camp. . . unless ayers or moreno ends up staging a longer-than-usual holdout (like deep into august), i won't even think about it. . . it's really not a big deal. . .

Funny how you come up with these unsubstantiated ideas of yours.....

And if McD ever were to come out and say he started the ball rolling, since when is it wrong for a HC to bring with him a player(s) that know his system, thus easing the learning curve's pain?

And I won't even mention your loose use of the word "stud". ;)

"IT" isn't in cut-n-run'ers vocabulary just yet. :coffee:
