I was in denver and got to attend the derby in 1998 at coors field.
while most recall the reluctant griffey as a late entry and eventual winner, My fondest memory is JIM THOME !
of all the homers, more than 100 that night, THOMES was the most incredible by far !
it was a rocket thaT I will always swear was still rizing as it hit the MILE high row of purple chairs that stand out amongst the green seats! i can remember the sound it made when it hit the seats because unlike other homers that fans fought to catch, these near-by fans were running to get out of the way !
anyone else remember this shot?
can you find a video?
it was amazing !

I think home run derby's are as entertaining as watching golf... amusing for about 3 minutes and then its time to change the channel.

O.k. something to do with hitting baseballs. not sure what a derby is in that context though. BUT. I was watching the sox and yankees go at it yesterday. great job by the redsox to beat the yankoffs. what a great game baseball is.

not so sure about that Tinker tot. the yankees rallied, but istr (I seem to recall) a player in a red jersey catching a ball in the outfield to end the game.

Zam, admittedly I was not the baseball fan in '98 that I am now. I've followed the Rockies since '93 but I didn't fall in love with the game until around '09.

Better than the All-Star Game, itself.

The All-Star break always throws me off on fantasy though. I just went to set my lineups and realized...yeah, All-Star break.

Rooting for CarGo, obviously, and interested to see what a hot, humid, Kauffman night will do to the home run contest. Home runs might be down.

I am disappointed Stanton isn't in it, and would have really liked to see Bryce Harper.

I want to see a Derby with non All-Stars. Watching Adam Dunn, Chris Davis, Mike Moustakas, Nelson Cruz swing for the AL would be a blast.

I'm glad Bryce Harper didn't get named to the Home Run Derby. I'm a little miffed that he's in the all star game. That being said, I'm glad to see Mike Trout get the nod. I think he's partially responsible for the Angels getting back into their race after their horrible start at the beginning of the year.

Neither can hit for average, but they can both crush the ball. I saw Davis hit a HR with a broken bat. Nellie just hits everything hard

Yeah, I was a little disappointed seeing Harper make it as well, but they probably did it because he's a story this year.

That's pretty epic.

There was another game this season where he swung and missed and his bat went into the stands. Bat boy brought him a new bat, but he took the new one and gave it to the guy in the stands in a trade for the one he was using...then hit a HR on to Eutaw Street.

I love Davis. Kid always tore up the minors and just couldnt figure it out in the Show. But he's getting a chance this year and doing pretty well. Only 26, so I'm hoping he continues to improve.

We've got someone like that in Tyler Colvin. He had a good Rookie year but dropped off last year for the Cubs. The cubs gave him to us for Ian Stewart, and so far I think we won that trade.

Definitely. If Colvin could live up to his potential, he'd be a stud...especially in Colorado. He's only 26 as well, so we'll see. But I dont know how batting leadoff is going to help him.

Well, Showalter did the same thing with Nolan Reimold. Mainly because we dont have a true leadoff hitter and I guess he had to put someone there. I could see if Colvin was a good OBP guy, but he pretty much NEVER walks.

It's because Tracy has been jerking Fowler around this year. Tracy will not have the patience to let a batter get comfortable or work out of a slump. Fowler should be hitting lead in every game that he starts in. period.

I think the problem with Fowler this year is he's swinging like a middle of the lineup guy. He needs to get back to a leadoff hitter mentality. He has the speed, hitting and OBP ot excel there. His stolen base percentage is up this year as well. I know that was an issue with him in the past.

Sorry...til I see him hit differently on the road...it is what it is.

Right now he is .270/.330/.447 on the road which isn't that bad, but his slg could be greatly improved. I think if he ever stops getting fooled by sliders that move down and away from him, you'll see his road splits go up.

I honestly don't care who wins. I just want to see how far they hit it. The longest home run I've ever witnessed was Wily Mo Pena at Kauffman when he was with the Red Sox. I'll try to look up the distance of it tonight, but it would have gone over the Royals Hall of Fame in left field, which wasn't there at the time. That gives you an idea of how far it went. It landed probably 40 feet over where the seats end in left.

I got to witness the 93 HR Derby with Griffey and JuanGon. Griffey hit the warehouse and it was pretty amazing. A few years ago, I saw Hamilton hit one that went 490.

Watching Cecil Fielder was always pretty exciting too. Willy Mo could hit it hard...just not often enough. He came back with AZ last year...is he on a roster this year? Or back in Japan?

MOtorboat

I'm almost positive Wily Mo is in the minors, and for some reason I think he actually got called up for a few games earlier this season.

I witnessed The Big Cat knockout a portion of the scoreboard at Coors, but that was batting practice.

MOtorboat
07-09-2012, 02:51 PM
More of an idea of what you could see tonight...I saw Texeira hit one that was to the right of the fountains, and about five feet short of going over the fountains in batting practice, and I've seen Ankiel hit one almost to the three retired numbers at the base of the scoreboard.
