First Gears of War 3 Rumors Spilled
Bleszinski rules out horror project, teases more Gears of War

Epic Games design director shoots down rumors that he's working on a Silent Hill-style game, says "there's still a lot of stories to tell in the Gears universe."

Back in November 2006, former Microsoft corporate vice president of global marketing Jeff Bell made explicit reference to a "Gears of War trilogy" just weeks after the first Gears of War came out. And until Gears of War 2 was officially unveiled at the 2008 Game Developers Conference, both the Microsoft and Gears developer Epic Games refused to say a sequel was being planned. The denials came despite the fact Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski specifically mentioned a sequel during a session at GDC 2007.

Now, in the course of shooting down a rumor that he might be working on a survival horror project, Bleszinski has teased the (obvious) prospect of a third Gears project being in the works. Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine UK, the outspoken designer said, "No, I'm not making a horror game next. Gears is very much near and dear to me."

"There's only been two Gears games, man," he continued. "There's still plenty of opportunities for things you can do in a cover-based shooter, and there's still a lot of stories to tell in the Gears universe. I'm not burned out on that at all." As recently as last October (see video below), Bleszinski said there were no plans for a Gears trilogy, and that Epic was handling the franchises on "a game by game basis."

The designer's mention of "stories" points to new plot-driven content, not mere multiplayer map packs. So far, though, the only new post-Gears of War 2 single-player experience to be officially announced is the Gears of War 2: Dark Corners expansion. "New" is a bit of a misnomer because the one single-player chapter, called "Road to Ruin," in the expansion was cut from Gears of War 2.

Dark Corners also sports seven multiplayer maps and will be available worldwide on July 28 for download a la carte via Xbox Live or as part of the Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection retail disc. Priced at $19.99/£14.99/€19.99, the All Fronts collection also contains three previously released maps, an Xbox Live theme, a collectible poster, a strategy guide, and a video introduction from one Clifford Bleszinski.

Good. Love the trilogy. It's my shooter of preference, even moreso than COD4.

I just finished the first Gears. My XBox crapped out on me in Iraq and I just got it repaired. Bought a used copy of Gears, holy crap, what an awesome game.

I'm getting 2 tomorrow, looking forward to three!

To me the lancer rifle/chainsaw bayonet is second only to the lightsaber in coolest fictional weapons.

Gears is awesome. Anybody else think 1 was actually harder than 2? Either way, I enjoyed both of them very much, and the multiplayer is great.

Yeah, GOW1 was so much harder than GOW2.

I remember just flat out cursing and running around in fear on that one mission where you have to shoot the propane bins and run through the dark from those bat things. So effin hard. That and the final boss.

The final battle/sequence in GOW2 was really fun (riding that huge alien thing, for one), but a lot like Halo in that you're probably going to survive it no matter what (shooting the Hammer of Dawn at the other monster-alien thing; really cool, but not difficult or a formal boss battle).

I'm pumped for how this one will conclude. I hope it doesn't take a Halo turn where you're fighting two types of species (you know, the glowing guys versus the regular guys started in GOW2).

I thought Gears 1 was a LOT easier.

Other than that Berserker thing in 1 I sailed through the game.

They gave you the Hammer so often, at the end of Gears 2 was the only time you had it.

Plus you had to fight those giant things much more in 2.

It also seemed like their were more enemies.

I love them both.

Finally went back through on Gears 1 to beat insane mode. Loved both of them, can't wait for 3!

I really hope they bring the battles to a HUGE scale in this next game; large-scale warfare is pretty much the only thing on my wishlist at this point for GOW3. Just huge, immense battlefields full of both good guys and villains. It would be a blast, even if some say that the fighting style isn't good for that kind of combat. I'd have a ball with it.
