I like it. Orton has a significantly higher growth potential over Simms and McDaniels system is much more friendly to Orton's game than what he played under Chicago. He's a tough and resilient kid and the faster h4e can establish cohesiveness with the 1st unit the better off the offense will be.

On one hand, I am surprised it came this soon, but McD may want to see how Orton handles this going into training camp, and if he does not handle it well, there would be time to change to Simms. Also, possibly McD felt that with neither of them knowing if they would be the starter or not, it was putting pressure on both Orton, as well as Simms.

I think McD named the wrong QB the starter.

Should have been Jay Cutler.

I like it. This will give Orton more 1st team reps when the preseason games start (instead of alternating the two if the job were still up for grabs). Plus I think Simms has a good attitude and will be a fine backup qb (the best backup qb the broncos have had in a long time). Simms afterall did sign here initially expecting to be the backup (when Cutler was still around)

A bit of a surprise in timing, only because I just read an article yesterday about it being a wide open competition. However, it seemed pretty likely that Orton was the front runner, both based on his play in Chicago, but more so the fact he was part of the Jay trade and reportedly a QB McD was very high on.

As to the timing, I think it's great. Now, Orton and Simms won't have to share as many of the first team snaps. Hopefully, Orton will work primarily with the first team as they all learn the new offense, and can focus on learning the offense and getting ready for the season, without having to focus as much on a "if I stumble at all, I lose out to Simms for the starting role". Yes, we want a QB that isn't afraid to compete for a job, but when you have an entire team learning a new offensive and defensive scheme, you want your new QB to be able to focus on learning the new scheme, not learning the new scheme and trying "not to lose" the starting gig.

I'm glad the announcement was made this early.

# McDaniels on QBs: "It just puts them in a pressure type situation now where one of them has to keep it and the other one wants to get it."

I don't think the Bears would have liked McDaniels naming their quarterback as his starter.

I'm pretty sure the league has rules against things like that.;)

I also think Jay wouldn't have liked the commute from Chicago to Denver. That's a pretty long way to travel back and forth to work and home.:D

Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced shortly after Saturday’s practice that Kyle Orton has been named the starting quarterback.

We will have more on the story this afternoon, so stay tuned to DenverBroncos.com

Josh McDaniels came to a decision, putting Kyle Orton atop the team's depth chart at quarterback. (THE DENVER POST | JOHN LEYBA)Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels just named Kyle Orton his starting quarterback. Orton had been competing with Chris Simms for the job throughout the season.

Orton, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears in April as part of the Jay Cutler trade, was named the starter with two days remaining in the Broncos' off-season minicamp training program.

He will start regular training camp in July as the Broncos' No. 1 quarterback.

Wow, I'm glad he is not a diabetic!

Being a drunk, diabetic QB would probably turn you into a douchebag.

Wasn't there a thread here that said McDaniels in no hurry to name QB?

I don't really care either way. I think most people assumed Orton would get the first crack. After all, if McDaniels didn't think Orton was better than Simms, he wouldn't have traded for him.

Either Simms did really terrible contrary to reports or Orton was flat out amazing. For the sake of winning I am hoping the later option was true.

On the other hand, it could be that sharing rep's with the 1st team wasn't doing either of them any good and deciding on a starter was just a formality.

My gut tells me that Simms was never really in any danger of being named the starter, this was Orton's job to lose from the beginning.......

IMO, I think this is too early. What happens if Ortan struggles in preseason and Simms shines? He should have waited until they showed what they have during live action.

May show in training camp if this was or was not the right decision.

As long as the evidence is all but overwhelming that Orton's the man. Cool.

If it's not, then I'd worry about McD's much touted ego getting in the way if Kyle struggles.

Lucky for me I have no insight into what's happening just now, so no worries.

GO ORTON!!

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The wait is over.

After nearly two-months of competition, Head Coach Josh McDaniels named Kyle Orton the team's starting quarterback following practice on Saturday at Dove Valley.

Orton, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears on April 2nd, beat out veteran signal caller Chris Simms to become the Broncos' starter.

"We've said from day one that when it was clear and apparent to us through a number of practices, meetings and those type of things that you evaluate the quarterback on that we would make a decision, and we have," McDaniels said following day two of the team's final minicamp. "That certainly does not mean that there won't be competition now or in training camp, because there will."

McDaniels said he made his decision Friday night, the same day he told media members that his entire offensive scheme had been installed. He cited Orton's ability to grasp the offensive system slightly faster than Simms as one reason for the move. Simms agreed with his head coach and said he believes Orton picked up the mental aspects quicker than he did.

"Kyle is extremely underrated," Simms said. "I've always felt that way. He was underrated in college and he was underrated with the Bears. He throws the ball very well, he's a smart guy and he's a big guy. There are a lot of pluses about Kyle and I have the ultimate respect for his game."

Orton is no stranger to being an NFL starter. In fact, he's started every game he has played.

Since being selected by the Bears in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft, Orton has proven to be a winner. As a rookie, he played 15 games behind center for Chicago, going 10-5 and leading the team to the NFC North title. During Orton's four-year tenure with the Bears, he started 33 games while compiling a 21-12 record.

What should excite Broncos Country even further is that Orton is coming off a career-best season in 2008 in which he totaled 2,972 yards and 18 touchdowns.

"Obviously I'm real excited," Orton said about being named the team's starter. "It's really just the beginning for me in this offense and hopefully (I'll) just continue to improve and get myself and the offense where we need to be come the season."

Now that a decision has been made, McDaniels -- who made it clear that nothing is set in stone in June -- is interested to see how both players perform after the fact.

"It just puts them in a little bit of a pressure-type situation now," McDaniels said. "One of them actually has it and has to keep it and the other one doesn't and wants to get it. They are still going to compete with each other and I expect the competition to be the same as it's been."

Simms, who is still confident he can win the starting job, appears to be handling the decision with class.

After practice, the seventh-year veteran took time to speak to the media about the announcement. Simms said naming a starter before the team parts for over a month prior to training camp was the "right thing to do" in order to end speculation. Although surely disappointed in the decision, as a player who missed most of the 2006 season and all of 2007 after undergoing an emergency splenectomy, he is happy to be healthy and playing football.

"To me, I feel like a lot of this is a big bonus, honestly," Simms said. "I signed here thinking I was just going to be the backup. Even having the chance to compete and do all that is kind of icing on the cake and I'm really excited about it."

Orton didn't simply pat himself on the back following the announcement. With a tireless worker like Simms behind him, he knows he still has plenty of work left to do to hold onto the spot.

"(Chris) is still fighting his butt off to take over the job; I need to keep on playing well," Orton said. "Now it is about improving and showing leadership, and like I said, trying to get the offense where we need to be for game one."

Didn't you know?

If the QB is Jake Plummer, past performance doesn't matter.

If the QB is Kyle Orton, the QB so great that he lost his job to Brian Griese and Rex Grossman, then it's an automatice Super Bowl.
