View Full Version : The deep ball won’t determine success of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning

In all of the somewhat premature discussion about whether or not Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning can still chuck the deep ball enough to satisfy everyone in Broncos Nation is this:

Many offensive coaches around the league believe the 50-yards-in-the-air-deep toss is a relic in today’s NFL, where coverage schemes are built on taking it away. Often the big plays are the result of smart decisions made by quarterbacks that result in huge catch-and-run efforts from their receivers.

And Manning has been far more like a surgeon, getting the ball to the right guy at the right time with piles of yards after the catches, than a wing-it-deep guy for much of his career.

Agreed, and it's one of the reasons I'm not concerned about his neck. No doubt he doesn't throw the ball like he did when he was 26, but how hard he can throw isn't the most important part of PM's game.

joe montana earned his golden ticket to the HOF with 10 yard passes that were on time, on target.
Most 40 + yard pass completions are the result of a pass less than 20 yards and YAC !
this is not only true for PM but for every other NFl QB !
what kind of an old al davis relic thinks that the success of an NFL offense is predicated on completing 50 yard (in the air)passes?
an uninformed idiot, thats who !

people who dont understand this basic premise have no buisness discussing football other than, 'did you see the game yesterday?

I've seen more ridiculous argument based on this article!

Here's the key part that needs emphasis:

"Many offensive coaches around the league believe the 50-yards-in-the-air-deep toss is a relic in today’s NFL, where coverage schemes are built on taking it away."

Defensive coaches say they want to force offenses to “go the long way” for their touchdowns. And they also say nobody in the league adjusts to what he sees from a defense better than Manning.

Manning said Monday the deep ball is about opportunity, about hitting it when you see the chance, and he has shown already in the Broncos’ offseason work that he can hit the big one when he has to. And any quarterback will have a special place in his heart for the one-play touchdown drive.

Teams emphasize defending against the deep pass generally by bringing safety help over the top. That means having a deep safety to make sure that nobody gets behind the defense.

This is adequately described "Make them go the long way."

But, if you can't THROW that pass accurately and in timely fashion, then the defense doesn't have to DEFEND it!

Whatever they can take away from the offense gives the Defense an advantage!

With Jay Cutler, they had to respect the bomb, even though he didn't complete that many of them. With Orton they didn't. They could bring more defenders closer to the line because they didn't respect his arm. He didn't make them pay for it either.

As for Tebow, despite his ability to hit a couple of long sideline patterns, his inability to throw over the middle of the field meant that defenses could bring up to 8 men in the box to defend the run.

The advantage Manning has is that he can do ANYTHING at all. Which means the defense has to "play honest." They can't cheat down and bring extra defenders into the box because he'll exploit that.

They can't blitz him with extra rushers because he'll call a play to throw to a receiver right in the area vacated by the extra rushers.

About the only way to defend Manning is to get inside pressure right up the middle in his face and hit him and disrupt his timing. That, plus mauling his receivers over the middle is how the Patriots managed to beat Manning in the playoffs.

But, not every team has a Vince Wilfork and can get consistent inside pressure with just 4 rushers.

The Giants managed to win the SB over the 18-0 Patriots because they didn't have to bring extra rushers to get pressure on Brady. They did it again this SB.

But, few teams have a DL like the Giants, so Manning will have his successes.

But, if teams thought he COULDN'T throw the deep ball over the top of them then they could leave the WR in single coverage deep and bring the extra defender over to cover the short pass.

And that would take away from his success in the short-passing game.
