ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The horseshoes on Peyton Manning’s helmet have been replaced by profiles of a horse’s head, the jersey is a different shade of blue and the scars on his neck are a painful reminder of the last 18 months. Otherwise, nothing was different Monday about Manning, the only four-time most valuable player in N.F.L. history, as he went through his first practice as a Denver Bronco — and his first since missing last season because of multiple neck surgeries.

“This was one step,” Manning said. “There’s different phases. Training camp will be your next step, putting on shoulder pads, and then preseason, regular season. So I’m kind of taking it one step at a time, but I was excited for this day to get here.”

The practice was not a stern test; no contact was allowed, per the league’s rules for off-season sessions. But it was another step that followed his return to throwing, his March workouts for suitors from Denver, San Francisco and Tennessee and the start of workouts at Broncos headquarters last month, when he could work with new receivers at the team headquarters for the first time.
