The Broncos today released running back J.J. Arrington after Arrington failed his physical.

Arrington, who signed with the team as a free agent from Arizona in March, had knee surgery after the Super Bowl and had been unable to participate so far in the Broncos' organized team activities.

Arrington was one of three free-agent tailbacks signed by the Broncos, and the team also drafted running back Knowshon Moreno with its top pick in the draft.

I don't think that's the case, he failed a physical. I believe we'd be off the hook for at least some of the money because of it.

Nope, We have to pay all of it

Broncos released/failed physical RB J.J. Arrington.
They're eating a $1.8 million signing bonus, and Arrington never even got in a practice for the team. Denver signed Arrington in March hoping he'd be Josh McDaniels' next Kevin Faulk, but Knowshon Moreno shouldn't be any less effective on passing downs. The move leaves Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, Darius Walker, and injured Ryan Torain behind Moreno, the Broncos' likely starter. Arrington, 26, won't resurface until his knee gets healthy.

Denver Broncos release Arrington
RB requires season-ending surgery

J.J. Arrington (AP file photo)This may further explain Knowshon Moreno.

The Broncos released J.J. Arrington on Wednesday after it was determined the running back will need season-ending microfracture surgery on his troublesome right knee.

Arrington, who was slated to become the Broncos' third-down back after he was signed away from the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals, had been trying to recover from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery performed by an Arizona surgeon. As Arrington struggled to regain strength in his knee, the Broncos used their No. 12 overall draft pick last month to select Moreno, a running back from the University of Georgia.

Arrington will go down as the tailback the Broncos once badly wanted, but never had. On Feb. 27, the opening of free agency, the Broncos and Arrington reached an agreement in principal on a four-year, $10 million contract that included a $3 million guarantee in signing bonus and salary.

The deal was never signed, however, because the two sides disagreed over contract language regarding the torn meniscus in Arrington's right knee. A week later, the contract was rewritten and an agreement was reached, this time with a knee-injury waiver against the $3 million.

Even with Arrington gone, the Broncos have considerable tailback depth with Moreno, Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan, Ryan Torain, Darius Walker and Peyton Hillis, whose versatility could earn some third-down snaps.

it is most likely true as a signing bonus is just that If it was a signing bonus..

I can't fathom that we were smart enough to make it contingent on being able to pass a physical.. or the agent lawyer dumb enough to agree to it if we did..

edit: perhaps Xman is smarter than the previous GM..

Good thing the previous GM hired him.

That's right, Selvin Young did get released......I still think one more is going to be cut and it is going to be Darius Walker or Ryan Torain....or even Correll Buckhalter.

Ryan Torain may be on the Chopping Block in Denver
by C.W. on May 4, 2009 12:2

In some unfortunate speculation by Pro Football Weekly, Ryan Torain may be on the lookout for a new job.

"Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels has thoroughly revamped his team’s RB corps and commenced dumping some holdovers from the Mike Shanahan era, releasing Selvin Young on April 30. The next to go is likely to be Ryan Torain, an oft-injured favorite of Shanahan’s. Torain, a fifth-round pick last year, was able to play in just two games last season between an elbow injury and a torn ACL."

This reminds me of a brief conversation I had with a Denver Broncos scout in the fall before the ASU/Washington State football game.

We were discussing Ryan Torain's recent ACL injury, and he made it clear that while Denver really liked Torain's ability and skill set, ACL injuries for RBs were often the last straw. RBs who suffer ACL injuries usually get second chances, but only on a new team.

I took this to mean that Torain's days in Denver were through, but up until now I had heard nothing of the sort. This is the first article indicating any possibility of Torain's release. With the addition of Knowshon Moreno, it's only a matter of time.

you know the good thing is they were smart enough to redo the contract with language safeguarding us against a knee issue, now that its season ending we can safely say we have already had a serious injury at RB, but we were smart enought to keep the cost down.

what i like here now......is last year when we had injuries our depth consisted of a inconsistent and injury prone runner in selvin, a back with no vision in andre hall, a aging vet in pittman, a guy already hurt in torain, as well as whatever scrubs we could find before hillis got his shot. that right there is enough to make me wanna puke.

this year we have our first RB issue but depth wise we sit very pretty. We have a elite prospect in moreno, a outstanding back-up in buckhalter, a hard worker and good runner in jordan, a talented project in darius walker, a young pup who shows flashes when healthy in torain, and the truck we all have come to love in peyton hillis.

there is not any reason to be upset that we cut arrington, or to attack the new regime for there decision to go after him or release him now, for once i am not dreading what our run game will look like heading into the new season.

ITS GREAT!!!!

i dont think torain gets cut unless they find some waiver wire gem before TC, i think torain doesnt make it out of TC now....but he is already on The TC roster. going into TC with only moreno, buckhalter, jordan, walker and hillis is not smart at all. you typically want 6-8 TB in TC competeting.

most likely the final roster will consists of 4 rb's with hillis at FB, when they want to use hillis im sure spencer larsen will come in at FB. i see hillis being used on every down in some way or another, same with moreno......thats a very nasty combination to pair with marshall, royal and stokley on the field....

I personaly don't see any reason to cut Torain. He can be stashed on the PUP till mid season then they can look at the state of the roster and see if they want him. If we've had some injuries or Jordan looks old he can come in half way. If there's no place for him we can cut him then.

Dirk

I don't begrudge Torain or anything, but if they did cut him we wouldn't be losing anything really.

He played in 2 games with 15 carries for 69 yards and 1 TD.

Granted the raw tools seem to be there, but what I am saying is that he wouldn't be missed. I'm not being mean about it, just realistic.

P.O.C., he gets the 100,000 signing bonus, but not the 1.7 million dollar roster bonus as he didn't make the team. So we lose 100,000 bucks. Oh well.

The Broncos website lists Kestahn Moore, RB on the current roster as well. Without Arrington, that equals 7 pure RB/FBs on the roster going into training camp, excluding Spencer Larsen. :listen:

I really liked Kestahn Moore at Florida. I doubt he makes the team but I'm glad Denver at least brought him in for a look.

With Arringtons contract terms and release being cited, it sheds even more light on the Moreno selection and the pickup of Buck, Jordan and the rest.

In reality, these three backs along with Hillis will be the horses we go in with. In Moreno, Buckhalter, Jordan and Hillis, I think we have a very good set of backs.

Lets hope they stay healthy and hardnosed.

I do not think hard nosed is a worry..:D

But there seems to be a NEW strength and condition routine this year.. I read that coming from one of the players a while back.. Perhaps they ID'd what was causing all of the Ir's last year and are going to fix it..

I HOPE WE DONT CUt torain.

I like him a whole hell of a lot better than bucky. And i like buck too. But lets be real bucky is old and injury prone. Torain is young and injury prone. IF we are going to have an injury prone backup, let him atleast be young.

Other than that i am fine with moreno/jordan leading the charge and whoever else backs them up.

Arrington Disappointed He Won't Be A Bronco
(AP) ―
J.J. Arrington's career with the Denver Broncos was halted before he even took his first handoff when the team released the tailback following a failed a physical due to a balky right knee.

Arrington signed a four-year deal worth about $10 million in early March and figured to be a third-down specialist for the Broncos in 2009, a role similar to the one he played last season for the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals.

However, the knee has been giving him trouble since he had arthroscopic surgery soon after the Cardinals' loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.

His agent, J.R. Rickert, said they're consulting with doctors to decide on the next move.

"We're doing our due diligence to get proper medical advice," Rickert said. "He's doing OK, a little disappointed under the circumstances. He was doing everything in his power to rehab his current situation."

Denver had a rash of injuries in the backfield last season, placing seven tailbacks on injured reserve.

The team kept adding depth in the offseason, bringing in veterans Correll Buckhalter, LaMont Jordan and Arrington. Denver also selected Knowshon Moreno with the 12th pick in the draft to bolster the backfield.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was hopeful Arrington could bounce back from the bothersome knee.

"It just got to the point where we realized and he realized that it wasn't going to work out for him this year with the injury," McDaniels said. "He was great for us when he was here, had a great attitude and great approach ... Who knows, maybe we'll get another opportunity down the road."

That's something Arrington's camp would definitely consider.

"He had a great, albeit short, relationship with coach McDaniels," Rickert said.
