Bill Williamson (http://www.kffl.com/link/3), of ESPN.com (http://www.kffl.com/link/9), reports the Denver Broncos (http://www.kffl.com/team/15/nfl) and Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.kffl.com/team/21/nfl) could both be landing spots for Dallas Cowboys (http://www.kffl.com/team/14/nfl) LB Greg Ellis (http://www.kffl.com/player/494/nfl) should the team decide to trade or release him.

Well, take it for what its worth. Its Burger Bill afterall........

PFT just reported that the cowgirls have given ellis permission to seek a trade, and that jerruh jones has said ellis won't be playing for dallas this year. . . i'd love to see us make a run at him-- he's old, but he's still has some production left, and he could be a valuable mentor for young players making the transition from defensive end to 3-4 OLB. . . .

No reason to trade for a guy who is going to get cut. I'd welcome Ellis here though as competition and as Dogfish said, mentorship for the young bois.

at $4.15 mil we should not be.

That is what the Cowboys are going to save by getting rid of him, that isn't how much he'd cost us -- or any other team willing to bring him in.

it can't be much less than that.. as he only has a couple of years left on the contract.. so he would have any salary bonus accelerate to this year/next as dead money..

they can have jj arrington and our 6th for him.

Like chris said. Why trade when we can get him for free. I would rather take our chances and wait. We have lots of bodies there, but he is a solid proven player.

Denver wouldn't pick up his bonuses, and it is unlikely that he will be traded. No team is going to trade for Ellis when they know that he will be cut by the Cowboys for salary concerns. He will sign for less with any team he would want to play for just so he can play. That is a given.

If he is traded then for the most part we get his contract unless we re write it.. the odds are he may not want to do that and be able to go as a FA to someone HE wants to go to.. even if it is for less.

For example if his contract is for 6 mil and his signing bonus are still due for say 1.85 mil that would be what they would save.. 4.15

so it may well be more than the 4.15 mil.. thanks for pointing out my error..:salute:

The basic point he isn't going to be traded for the reasons outlined, and it is clear through the way you are trying to mathmatically justify this that you are confused on how contracts, bonuses and the whole process regarding that works. So yeah, I'll agree to disagree for the obvious reasons.

Yep your correct I'm the one that is confused .. but lets leave it at that..

For what ever reason I hope we do not bring him in for year or so.. I'd rather win or lose with the new kids, cause they will never get playing time and you learn from your mistakes..

He will be cut for multiple reasons. Salary is a minor part of it, but he has done nothing but fought about his move from DE to LB since it happened and went from a clubhouse leader to a thorn in the side. He has skills, but if he still insists on being a DE...then there is no reason to discuss it.

Ellis is a solid player.

Considering we have pretty much nobody on our defensive line a solid player would be a nice upgrade.

at this point in his career, he's really still trying to go back to DE? hunh. . . well that's kinda stoopid! he's had some of his most productive seasons at OLB, and at his age i'd think he's appreciate the chance to preserve his body a little bit by rushing from the edge instead of banging with OLs every snap. . .

If Ellis gets cut, anyone who picks him up is accountable for none of his prior contract. If he gets cut, his pro-rated signing bonus over the remainder of his Cowboys contract would be accelerated and would count against the Cowboys cap this year.

If a team trades for him, they would be responsible for the remainder of his contract NOT INCLUDING any signing bonus monies left pro-rated over the remainder of the contract.

In other words: Let him get cut........then sign him if you think he can help the team.

Your correct except if he is claimed off of waivers then the contract goes with him.. If he clears waivers then the contract is void..

So the key is IF someone really wants him they would have to either trade for him, or hope to get him off waivers IF they are low enough to do so..

Or out bid the others that might be interested in him..

The the real question is are we really interested in him or is this report off season fodder..

As expected, Greg Ellis was released today by the Cowboys after 11 seasons with the team ESPN reports.

Our View: Ellis had recently began complaining openly about both his role in the 3-4 defense and contract and didn't fit in with the Cowboys future. Whether he will with another team's future is uncertain at this point.

Lets put this one to BED RIGHT NOW.. NO ellis

Denver already has enough 4-3 DE's playing 3-4 OLB, unfortunately, Ellis might be an instant upgrade over any of them.......

Ellis bone with the 3-4 may actually be him not wanting to take a back seat to Spencer.
The guy came back from a torn achillies in 1 season and became pro-bolwer.
If he still can play OLB (with age and injury concerns) The Broncos would be crazy not to take a sniff.. He would be best front 7 player on the roster.
Also as far as a thorn those reports were thought to be not true as Parcells was said to have lauded him as a cossumate teammate. (no link - heard it on Sirius NFL).

he has publicly stated he does not like the 3-4.. he liked playing DE in a 4-3.. and there are plenty of team out there still playing 4-3 until he retires..

Ellis complained in 2006 about moving from defensive end to linebacker, saying the Cowboys and former coach Bill Parcells were setting him up to fail in the new 3-4 defensive alignment.

After that turned out OK, Ellis squawked again a year later when the Cowboys drafted Anthony Spencer, another college defensive end they planned to move to outside linebacker.

I get all the cowgirls news here I can handle, do not need it third hand from espn.... in alot of cases just rehashes the local stuff ..

I realize that this is all you have seen but the national stuff as we ALL KNOW from jaygate is not always spot on..

If the Chiefs or Broncos are interested in defensive end Greg Ellis, he is now available. Ellis, who Dallas was shopping, has been cut. The veteran pass rusher could interest both teams. If Ellis ends up in New England, the Patriots' interest has been reported, it could end the Patriots' interest in Oakland pass rusher Derrick Burgess.

well I do not know who Williamson is but even if NE would be interested they have an established scheme there and can handle a whinny baby better than we can at this point..
