Inside Slant

An area of focus entering the 2009 season is special teams. That improvement became an immediate priority for the new coaching staff.

Denver’s special teams consistently ranked low under Mike Shanahan. New coach Josh McDaniels didn’t want that to be a weakness that hdld back his first team.

“We have so much room to improve on special teams,” McDaniels said. “We were 32nd in the league in field position, so anybody that can help us on a kicking unit, I’d love to have them in a Bronco uniform.”

One of McDaniels’ first moves, and one of the most curious, was signing former Patriots long-snapper Lonie Paxton(notes) early in free agency. The Broncos had Mike Leach(notes), one of the most consistent long-snappers in the game, but Leach was cut after Paxton signed.

Even if the move seemed unnecessary, it showed Denver wanted players who could improve the special teams. They got some help on special teams in the draft as well.

Cornerback Alphonso Smith(notes) can return kicks and played special teams in college at Wake Forest. Notre Dame safety David Bruton(notes) was selected in the fourth round, and was the second free safety Denver took in the draft, but they mainly took him because of his special-teams ability.

Bruton played all of the special teams at Notre Dame before he became a starter, and was a standout in all areas, which should help the Broncos right away.

“He’s one of the finest special teams players in the draft, period,” McDaniels said.

The Broncos will likely have kicker Matt Prater(notes) and punter Brett Kern(notes) return to those duties for a second season. Denver has options in the return game, with Eddie Royal(notes) returning after a good year returning punts and kickoffs, and free agent signee J.J. Arrington(notes) capable of helping out on

kickoff returns.

Notes, Quotes

• It might take a while for the Broncos to figure out their best mix of players at the linebacker position.

The position became more vital when Denver introduced a new 3-4 defense. There are options for most positions, although the Broncos could end up with a few players learning new positions as they transfer away from the more familiar 4-3.

The Broncos’ strength will be in the middle, where D.J. Williams(notes) will play weak-side inside linebacker. Veteran Andra Davis(notes) is the likely starter on the strong side and has experience in a similar scheme. Second-year players Wesley Woodyard(notes) and Spencer Larsen(notes) have also played inside during recent minicamps.

Outside linebacker is a bigger piece of the puzzle, and perhaps a greater mystery, for the Broncos. During initial minicamp sessions, Darrell Reid(notes), a converted defensive lineman, and Elvis Dumervil(notes), a 4-3 end and pass-rushing demon his entire career, lined up at the outside positions. Tim Crowder(notes) and Jarvis Moss(notes), two highly-drafted ends in 2007, also played outside linebacker.

The transition won’t be easy for the former linemen. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said the team will use the players’ strengths in the best way possible. That probably means a player like Dumervil will rush the quarterback more often than he drops in coverage, but he will also have to learn how to play passing lanes in coverage.

Boss Bailey(notes) is a wild card because he is an athletic, versatile linebacker who has played the outside most of his career, but he’s recovering from a major injury. He had season-ending microfracture knee surgery last year and has a history of knee problems. If he comes back healthy, he should factor in the mix at outside linebacker.

Another possibility is rookie first-round pick Robert Ayers(notes). Ayers will play both end and outside linebacker, although it appears his first priority is learning end, a major need position for the Broncos. He could end up at outside linebacker in certain situations and has the athletic ability to play there regularly.

Denver’s linebackers will be under plenty of pressure this season. The Broncos are still rebuilding the line, so the linebackers should make a lot of tackles for a defense that is trying to improve from its ranking of 29th overall last season.

• The Broncos have already held two minicamps, and will have another passing camp in May. Their mandatory minicamp will come in early June. The Broncos will start training camp in the last week of July. They train at their own headquarters near Denver.

• The Broncos aren’t among the teams that have gotten an early jump on signing any draft picks. None of their picks were signed in the few weeks

after the draft. Denver has two first-round picks for the first time in history, which will be a unique challenge for the front office in getting all their picks into camp on time.

• Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has said he and general manager Brian Xanders will continue to explore all opportunities to improve the team. Most likely, the team will keep an eye on defensive linemen who are cut or can be acquired cheaply in a trade. In the draft, Denver used only one pick for help on the defensive line, which remains a need for the team.

Quote To Note: “I’m just trying to execute whatever package we’re in. Just try to get myself in good shape and condition and be mentally ready as well.”—Elvis Dumervil on switching from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker this season.

If Nolan and the new staff can get some seriously improved play up front and Orton can take advantage of what should become a pretty darn powerful offense we might get to watch some pretty interesting football this year.

I've griped about the ST's for years. Because he had Elam Mike seemed to think his STs were just fine and dandy. Like the defense, it's hard to imagine them not improving significantly.

"Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has said he and general manager Brian Xanders will continue to explore all opportunities to improve the team."--That would be very comforting if the possibility of them trading a 1st round pick or a Ryan Clady didn't exist.......

Us fans are left wondering if all these changes are by design or rookie mistakes. Somewhere in the back of our minds there is a burning feeling that without a NT the 3-4 will be helpless out there. They'll keep an eye out for a cool scrub that someone cuts for NT though. We'll see.

I've not heard a thing on him.. but will guess after micro fracture surgery his career is over and we will do a injury settlement with him..

That is successful so seldom, while better that in the past, but it is still a long shot.. that was what ultimately got TD..

I think so too, I think if he were healthy he'd already be gone, but on the other hand, I wonder if Nolan may see a Manny Lawson type role for Bailey.

Bailey and Woodyard could see the field in situational roles, imo, the Crowder/Moss/Dumervil/Ayers's will not be expected to do a lot of dropping into coverage, something Bailey and Woodyard could provide.......

I also believe I saw something about him costing us more to get rid of than keeping as far as the salary cap was concerned.. so IF he is healthy unless he is a complete tool under the new coaching staff he may stay..

It was reported last month that he was already starting to work out and was lifting with the team.

For Boss' sake I hope it was successful. Those types of injuries are bad news. But that guy is always hurt! I think he has only played in all 16 games one season of his career. And that was his rookie year IIRC.

Zactly.... Kind of like the DB's... doesn't matter WHO we have in the backfield if they have to cover for 3 minutes per pass play. The LB's have to stay clean in this scheme if they are going to be able to flow and make plays. The middle will be our weakness if we haven't solved NT. I don't have any doubts that Nolan knows this, but this will take a player, not just a coach's recognition of an obvious need.

Micro fracture surgery has a 75-80% success rate. (http://armchairgm.wikia.com/Microfracture_surgery)

So I'm just gonna wait and see how his turns out.

That "success" rate sounds awfully high to me as it relates to NFL players/Line-backers.

While I did not read the report yet. I'm guessing that NTL is correct those Success numbers are much lower for those big guys in a rigorous proffesion.

The Denver Broncos already lost quarterback Jay Cutler(notes) this offseason, so dealing another Pro Bowl offensive player is far from ideal. Receiver Brandon Marshall(notes) wants to be dealt, but the Broncos don’t appear in a rush to accommodate that wish.

That could lead to more drama for a team that has had its share this offseason. Marshall could hold out of training camp, creating a distraction.

Marshall would also fall behind in learning the new offense and working with new quarterback Kyle Orton(notes), which would hurt the team on the field. Marshall hasn’t practiced at all this offseason because of hip surgery.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said he’s willing to go with the receivers that are willing to play for him, which he might have to do if Marshall digs in and doesn’t report to the Broncos for a while.

Offseason Standout: Tight end Tony Scheffler(notes) started his offseason wondering what his role was with the team. As OTA practices went on, it became very apparent that McDaniels will find a big role for him. The Patriots weren’t tight-end friendly with McDaniels calling plays, but Scheffler is the kind of talent McDaniels has to utilize. He is fast and has great hands, and is a matchup problem for most teams. Also, Scheffler had a healthy offseason, and could have a breakout year if he avoids injuries this season.

Lineup Watch: The Broncos are set in the middle of the defense with Andra Davis(notes) and D.J. Williams(notes) holding the inside linebacker spots. On the outside, it’s a little tougher to project, especially since the team decided to move on without Boss Bailey(notes), who was coming off major knee surgery and was released.

Most of the best options - Elvis Dumervil(notes), Darrell Reid(notes), Tim Crowder(notes) and rookie Robert Ayers(notes) - are natural 4-3 defensive linemen making the adjustment to playing standing up. Ayers spent most of the latter part of the minicamp practices at outside linebacker and not end, but the coaching staff plans to use him in both spots.

Rookie Impressions: While Knowshon Moreno(notes) was running behind LaMont Jordan(notes) and Correll Buckhalter(notes) for the offseason practices, the Broncos will use the 12th overall pick of the draft often this season. His exact role is uncertain - McDaniels liked to use a full committee in New England with many backs providing different looks - but he has shown he has the ability to play in the NFL. As soon as he shows a veteran-like command of the playbook, he should move quickly up the depth chart.

Injury Watch: Although all eyes are on Marshall and his potential holdout, he is still recovering from hip surgery. The team hopes he would be physically ready to go by the start of training camp, but they haven’t had a chance to test it out. If the team decides not to trade Marshall, and Marshall comes to camp, his health will bear watching.

Contract To Watch: The main issue Denver has before training camp will be with Marshall, but the Broncos also have two first-round picks to sign. Denver has never had two first-round picks in team history. There will be a challenge to get Moreno and Ayers both signed before the first practices. The Broncos have had a great track record getting their draft picks into camp on time, but that was under the old regime.

Notes, Quotes

• Denver claimed receiver C.J. Jones(notes) off waivers. Jones spent time with Cleveland in 2003 and with New England in 2008, with current Broncos coach Josh McDaniels. The team could be stocking up on depth in light of Brandon Marshall’s potential training camp holdout.

• Broncos center Casey Wiegmann(notes) is one of four NFL players to play for Ed Thomas, the legendary Iowa high school football coach at Aplington-Parkersburg who was tragically shot and killed on June 24. Wiegmann released a statement through the team talking about Thomas.

“I was extremely saddened to hear the news this morning about the passing of Coach Ed Thomas,” Wiegmann said. “He was a great Christian man. I learned a lot from him, both as a player and a man.”

• Spencer Larsen(notes), who played fullback and linebacker for the Broncos last season, started the offseason getting a lot of reps at linebacker, but spent much of the latter part of the team’s camps at fullback. He should provide depth on both sides of the ball for the Broncos.

• Jarvis Moss(notes), the team’s 2007 first-round pick, has been working at outside linebacker but didn’t get much practice time with the first two units this offseason. Moss, a natural 4-3 end, might need to make an impression in training camp to get off the roster bubble.

Quote To Note: “I cannot begin to count the number of lives he affected in this community. I know I carry many of the lessons I learned from him with me every day. My family and I pray for Coach Thomas’ family.” - Wiegmann, on the shooting of Thomas, his high-school coach.

Strategy And Personnel

The Broncos signed the first of their 10 draft picks, TCU center Blake Schlueter(notes), a seventh-round pick, in early June. Aside from trying to come to a resolution on Brandon Marshall’s situation, the team’s biggest issue before training camp will be hammering out deals with all of their draft picks.

Denver will also keep an eye on the waiver wire. The Broncos claimed receiver C.J. Jones off waivers on June 24, showing they’re still working to reshape the roster. Denver would have to consider any help on the defensive line or at linebacker, but impact players aren’t easy to find on the street during the summer.
