I can only answer the third part of that question ,a very good question at that I'll bet Topscribe can answer that.

I got this out of the Mile High Magazine pg 98, and I found it to be interesting knowing the birth of the football Denver BRONCOS.

The name "Denver BRONCOS" was chosen from 500 entries in a name the team contest in Jan of 1960. The name was suggested by Ward M. Vining of Lakewood. But the football team isn't the first Denver BRONCOS. Denver's 1921 entry in the Midwest Baseball League was also called the BRONCOS.

Wow. Let's see . . . boy, has my memory gone south on me today. . .

Without looking it up, it was quite a whirlwind deal, the founding of the
franchise. Upon the meeting in 1959 of Lamar Hunt and Bob Howsam, the
original owner, the AFL, and the Denver Broncos, were founded. The Denver
Broncos franchise came into existence shortly thereafter . . . for the price
of $25,000, believe it or not.

A fan contest was then held in 1960 to determine the mascot, which a
young lady won, as I remember, with the name "Broncos." (Boy I hated that
name at the time. :eviltongue: I had entered with the name "Diamondbacks,"
and my ego couldn't take that being beaten out by "Broncos." It grew on
me, though. :woot: ) Off the top, that's all I can answer right now. I might
remember more later.

Oh, and the second part of your question, the original Denver Broncos was
a minor league baseball team in the 1920s, I believe.

On the side, the city of Denver was not always a Colorado city. It was
founded in 1858, named after James Denver, the governor of Kansas
Territory at the time. (I don't know why I added this. It just occurred to
me, that's all, I guess. )

What teams were involved in the first ot regular season game & what was the final score.

Of course, I had to look this one up  but the following is interesting:
Final score Rams 23 - Giants 17

1950s: The Birth of Overtime

Many football fans regard the 1958 NFL Championship Game as the first overtime game in NFL history. Indeed it was the first playoff overtime game, but it was not the first-ever. That occurred three years earlier on August 28, 1955 in a pre-season game between the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants.

The two big city teams played at Multnomah Stadium in Portland, Oregon in front of 22,222 onlookers. Led by the likes of Charley Conerly and Hall of Famer Frank Gifford, the Giants scored twice in the first quarter to take a 10-0 lead. Tank Younger of the Rams scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter to make the score 10-7 at halftime.

Los Angeles scored twice in the third quarter to take a 17-10 lead, but it wasn't until the middle of the fourth quarter that New York got back on the board. Alex Webster provided a three-yard touchdown scamper to knot the game at 17-17.

The final gun sounded and neither team had scored thus thrusting the game, and the NFL, into overtime for the first time. The match would not have gone into overtime if it hadn't been for the game's promoter Harry Glickman. On a whim, he asked for the league's permission for overtime should the occasion arise. Needless to say, he could not have been luckier.

The sudden-death period, however, did not last very long. The Rams won the toss and, guided by Hall of Fame quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, constructed an 8-play, 70-yard drive that culminated with a two-yard TD plunge by Younger just three minutes and 28 seconds into the extended play.

The game was not witnessed by many people since it was not televised. None-the-less, the bout laid the foundation for the NFL to adopt the overtime rule for regular season games, finally being approved in 1974.

As a side note, another innovation was incorporated during this game. The field yardlines were marked from zero to 100 instead of the traditional goal lines to the 50. Not surprisingly, this trend never caught on.

I heard that on the radio the other day. Guess I always assumed he caught the majority of his catches from Elway. To have that type of career with the likes of Griese and Plummer says a lot about his true ability. That first year he didn't play much either, so it's really 3 1/2.

Bob Brown, T, Nebraska – 1st Round (2nd overall) by Philadelphia Eagles (Also drafted in 1st round – 1st overall – of the 1964 AFL Draft by Denver Broncos)

http://www.profootballhof.com/history/general/draft/year.jsp

Well then our info is conflicting.

According to http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/den.htm
Denver drafted Robert E. Brown DT/DE from Ark-Pine Bluff in 1964, not Robert S. Brown, the T from Nebraska.

I wonder which one is correct?

The 3rd person I was looking for was Paul Krause, also drafted in 1964. :salute:

I just found a third :D conflicting report.

I'm not sure...but this may only show players that signed with Denver, but according to the draft history Denver didn't draft anyone named Robert Brown in 1964.

So...we have the Pro Football Hall of Fame saying Denver drafted Hall of Famer Bob Brown out of Nebraska first overall in the 1964 AFL draft, pro-football-reference.com showing that we had the fourth pick overall and selected Robert E. Brown, and nfl.com/draft/fullhistory reporting that we didn't draft anyone by that name in 1964...

The mystery grows.

OK...the Hall of Fame says he was No. 1 overall in the AFL, but this (http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/alltimeno1) says he wasn't.

And they are both run by the NFL...

NFL.com says he didn't.

But their Hall of Fame site says he did.

Who were the two OFFENSIVE lineman who were part of the dirty dozen (both were not on the '77 team under Miller).

Lyons and MARV MONTGOMERY?! Just remembered him...

Are they not the same people that produced a poll calling D.Marino one of the most elusive qbs?

Yeah, but I don't think that getting the correct draft choice for a team is opinion.

Just for kicks and giggles, I looked it up tonight in Alzado's book "Mile High" from 1978 and Lyle said:

"Who were the dirty dozen? Well, there was me, Billy Thompson, Billy Van Heusen, Paul Smith, Tom Jackson, Riley Odoms, Otis Armstrong, Rick Upchurch, Louis Wright, Tommy Lyons, Mike Current and Haven Moses.

So I don't know now!!!

Here's one that some of you fellow "old-schoolers" may know but I thought that the "younguns" may want to learn something new: Who caught a touchdown pass late in the 1977 Divisional Playoff game vs. Pittsburgh only to have it nullified and why was it nullified? And on replay you could see that we got ripped-off on the call!

Extra credit points: What was special about this playoff game history-wise for us? :D

They won their first ever playoff game 34-21 and went to the superbowl!
I'm thinking it was Jack Dolbin. Nullified because they said it was an incomplete pass and then Turner missed the field goal on the next play.
Who cares...we won.
Those were awesome days of the Orange Crush, everybody in Colorado went crazzzzy. My favorite song was "Make Those Miracles Happen," played all the time! I can still remember some of the words...cool!

And I almost forgot the M & M connection....

WOW!! Big differences in names there! I wonder who was more accurate, Lyle or the new book? Lyle's book was 2 years removed from the incident, but who knows what he was on at the time! This new book is 32 years later. Very interesting how different the lists are!
