Since the draft is upon us, I find it fun to look at the past draft. Here is an interesting take on the redoing the 2006 draft.

In this scenario the Broncos picked a player in Jay Cutler who should of been the overall first pick and the Broncos hit it big with a player in Brandon Marshall who should of been the number 7 overall pick. Not bad for having two top 10 picks without breaking the Bank.

Enjoy!

After the 2006 draft, Houston fans thought they regret not taking Reggie Bush with the first overall pick for years to come. Now, three years later, Mario Williams has provided much more value than the injury-prone running back.

Even though Williams may have proven a better pick than Bush, was he the best overall pick? Dan Pompei takes a look back at who should have gone where in the first round in 2006.

Actual 2006 draft order
1. Houston Texans: Mario Williams, DE
2. New Orleans Saints: Reggie Bush, RB
3. Tennessee Titans: Vince Young, QB
4. New York Jets: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT
5. Green Bay Packers: A.J. Hawk, LB
6. San Francisco 49ers: Vernon Davis, TE
7. Oakland Raiders: Michael Huff, S
8. Buffalo Bills: Donte Whitner, S
9. Detroit Lions: Ernie Sims, LB
10. Arizona Cardinals: Matt Leinart, QB
11. Denver Broncos: Jay Cutler, QB
12. Baltimore Ravens: Haloti Ngata, DT
13. Cleveland Browns: Kamerion Wimbley, DE
14. Philadelphia Eagles: Brodrick Bunkley, DT
15. St. Louis Rams: Tye Hill, CB
16. Miami Dolphins: Jason Allen, S
17. Minnesota Vikings: Chad Greenway, LB
18. Dallas Cowboys: Bobby Carpenter, LB
19. San Diego Chargers: Antonio Cromartie, CB
20. Kansas City Chiefs: Tamba Hali, DE
21. New England Patriots: Laurence Maroney, RB
22. San Francisco 49ers: Manny Lawson, LB
23. Tampa Bay Bucaneers: Davin Joseph, CB
24. Cincinnati Bengals: Jonathan Joseph, CB
25. Pittsburgh Steelers: Santonio Holmes, WR
26. Buffalo Bills: John McCargo, DT
27. Carolina Panthers: DeAngelo Williams, RB
28. Jacksonville Jaguars: Marcedes Lewis, TE
29. New York Jets: Nick Mangold, C
30. Indianapolis Colts: Joseph Addai, RB
31. Seattle Seahawks: Kelly Jennings, CB
32. New York Giants: Mathias Kiwanuka, DE

1. Houston Texans: Jay Cutler, QB
The Texans really should have no regrets about taking Mario Williams, who is a young star, but teams rarely get a chance to acquire a franchise quarterback.
2. New Orleans Saints: Mario Williams, DE
Reggie Bush is a nice little gadget, but he has done nothing to justify being picked second in the draft. Williams would have transformed the New Orleans defense.
3. Tennessee Titans: Haloti Ngata, DT
Could you have imagined Ngata and Albert Haynesworth side by side? The Titans might have won the Super Bowl last year if they had Ngata instead of Vince Young, whom they chose with the third pick.
4. New York Jets: Devin Hester, WR/KR
No one has affected games from the 2006 draft more than Hester, who was passed over on 56 picks until the Bears chose him.
5. Green Bay Packers: Antonio Cromartie, CB
Dynamic playmaking cornerbacks like Cromartie don’t come along very often. If NFL teams knew he was going to be as good as he has been, he would never have lasted until the 19th pick.
6. San Francisco 49ers: DeMeco Ryans, LB
The first pick of the second round was voted defensive rookie of the year, and he has continued to play well since.
7. Oakland Raiders: Brandon Marshall, WR
You don’t think the Raiders would rather be playing with him than against him twice a year? Given Marshall’s personality, he would have fit right in with the Raiders.
8. Buffalo Bills: Marcus McNeill, OT
A two-time Pro Bowler at left tackle should not last until the 50th pick in the draft. McNeill has been a much more valuable commodity than anyone thought he would be.
9. Detroit Lions: Greg Jennings, WR
He should have been a first round pick, not a seconder. Jennings, who played at Western Michigan and grew up in Kalamazoo, Mich., would have been the perfect Lion.
10. Arizona Cardinals: Joseph Addai, RB
Could you imagine the Cardinals last season if they had a strong running game? Addai would have been the perfect complement to Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald.
11. Denver Broncos: Santonio Holmes, WR
This would have saved them the embarrassment of the Jay Cutler situation
12. Baltimore Ravens: Ernie Sims, LB
In the right defense, Sims can be a star. He has been a little inconsistent in Detroit, but there is no doubting his abilities.
13. Cleveland Browns: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT
He has not been an elite player, but he has held down the left tackle position, and he has the potential to keep getting better.
14. Philadelphia Eagles: A.J. Hawk, LB
As the fifth pick in the draft, Hawk probably has not played up to expectations. But he has not been a bad player.
15. St. Louis Rams: Rocky McIntosh, LB
The talent is starting to thin out. McIntosh is a serviceable starter but not a difference maker.
16. Miami Dolphins: Marques Colston, WR
He was the steal of the draft when the Saints got him with the fourth to last pick in the seventh round.
17. Minnesota Vikings: Owen Daniels, TE
Pro Bowl tight end, anyone? Daniels has developed into a solid pass catching tight end who makes a lot of plays.
18. Dallas Cowboys: Davin Joseph, OL
He went a little later (23rd to Tampa Bay) than he should have gone. Joseph just made his first Pro Bowl.
19. San Diego Chargers: Nick Mangold, C
This late first round pick has played pretty well for the Jets, but a center is only worth so much.
20. Kansas City Chiefs: DeAngelo Williams, RB
It took Williams a while to get going, but last year he finally started playing like the first round pick (27th) he was.
21. New England Patriots: Maurice Jones-Drew, RB
They chose Laurence Maroney, but Jones-Drew looks like he has a brighter future.
22. San Francisco 49ers: D’Qwell Jackson, LB
He has been a tackle machine on a bad defense in Cleveland.
23. Tampa Bay Bucs: Thomas Howard, LB
Howard has played about as well as he was expected to play as a high second round pick. But there aren’t enough players who have performed like first rounders.
24. Cincinnati Bengals: Reggie Bush, RB
Bush hasn’t been a very productive rusher, but he has been a valuable component of the Saints’ offense who impacts defenses on a number of levels.
25. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mathias Kiwanuka, LB
Kiwanuka, who was the last pick of the first round, would have been a good fit in the Steelers defense.
26. Buffalo Bills: Vernon Davis, TE
He was chosen sixth overall and has largely been a disappointment. But he has ability, and he might have been a lot more productive in other offenses.
27. Carolina Panthers: Donte Whitner, S
He has been a decent player, but he has not given the Bills much bang for their buck considering they chose him eighth overall.
28. Jacksonville Jaguars: Daniel Bullocks, S
He has operated in obscurity in Detroit, but the second round pick is developing into a pretty good player.
29. New York Jets: Tamba Hali, DE
Hali, who was picked 20th by the Chiefs, has been a solid, but not spectacular player thus far.
30. Indianapolis Colts: Laurence Maroney, RB
He wouldn’t have been a bad substitute for Joseph Addai.
31. Seattle Seahawks: Matt Leinart, QB
You couldn’t take Leinart any higher based on his production, but you still could take him here based on his potential.
32. New York Giants: Brodrick Bunkley, DT
He has not been much of a play maker, but he has been a big inside presence for the Eagles.

It's a pretty good overall ranking of the players taken. The draft order is messed up, though; no way does Denver move up to 11th to draft a WR. Also, as good as Hester is at returns, no way should he be ranked over top #1 WRs, and definitely not top 4.

The Bronco's had the number 15 pick originally. Linebacker Rocky McIntosh?

Problem was, during that time, we were perceived to have a solid rushing defense, but a weak pass rush. Our OL was also starting to get a bit old. Tatum had a pretty good season previously, so we probably didn't think we needed a RB. We also got Javon, so we probably weren't looking for a WR high either.

I don't think there are any quality DEs or OLs left for that high a pick. Maybe trade the pick for a player, trade down, or trade the pick for next season. :D

I wouldn't complain if either were the 1st pick.

There's something wrong with the Texans, though; they have so much talent now on defense, yet their defense isn't consistently good. Their offense usually outshines their defense.
