Okay, yes I know he left for Cleveland and then the Raiders, and yes he was all "jacked-up" on various stimulants, but the guy was a monster when he was here. A big part of the defense even though he was moody; also did do a lot of community work, especially visiting kids in hospitals. Let's hear it....

No, we've been reviewing and paying tribute to the great team of '77 for awhile now, and he's the next defensive player to discuss. What are your thoughts about him?

I always like Alzado's intensity. Now if memory serves me correctly Lyle went Cleveland because Denver let him go.

Loved the guy, fierce competitor and from what I remember a huge Raider hater which is ironic because he ended up with the Raiders.

The 77 team was the team that made me a fan and #77 at the time was Lyle Alzado! He was one heck of a character on and off the field and even appeared in several popular films back in the day.

That's too bad because you never saw a defense line up for us like that one-they were AWESOME! :salute:

He fought in the amateur ranks and was something like 44-1 but that was 10 years before he fought Ali.

I forgot about that! Alzado was a tough SOB! That 77 defense was full of all time Bronco greats.

Shame he threw his life away like he did, but loved him as a Bronco and for what he did for steriod awareness in his last years.

...miss that intensity and physical play in the defense and especially the defensive line.

some say that steroid use was not the cause of Lyle's cancer.

Misconception about Steroids and Brain Tumor

Alzado is probably most remembered today for being one of the first major U.S. sports figures to admit using steroids. In the last years of his life, as he battled against the brain tumor that eventually caused his death at the age of 43, Alzado asserted that his steroid abuse directly led to his fatal illness, but every single one of his physicians stated it could not possibly be true, and that while steroid's do have harsh side effects, they were not the cause of his brain cancer. According to some reports, Alzado was using natural growth hormone, harvested from human corpses, as opposed to synthetic growth hormones. However, shortly before his death, Alzado recounted his steroid abuse in an article in Sports Illustrated. He said:
“ I started taking anabolic steroids in 1969 and never stopped. It was addicting, mentally addicting. Now I'm sick, and I'm scared. Ninety percent of the athletes I know are on the stuff. We're not born to be 300 lbs or jump 30 ft. But all the time I was taking steroids, I knew they were making me play better. I became very violent on the field and off it. I did things only crazy people do. Once a guy sideswiped my car and I beat the hell out of him. Now look at me. My hair's gone, I wobble when I walk and have to hold on to someone for support, and I have trouble remembering things. My last wish? That no one else ever dies this way."[2] ”

I will believe the Docs if they say that there is no way anabolic steroids can cause brain cancer.

Agreed,

I mean't more just about steriod use in general, and not specifically the tumor part...

He seemed to think they were the cause of his cancer.

I remember Alzado's first game at Mile-Hi as a Raider: the crowd booed him like crazy during the introductions and then gave him a standing ovation after a 2nd quarter sack.

That was pretty cool. Those old Mile-Hi crowds were great football crowds.
