Excellent as long as the bounty shit doesn't get him suspended

I like it. I didn't know too much about him but a couple people who I trust on this board said it would be a good signing so I'm down with it.

Oh shit. I didn't even think of that. Now I'm a little nervous.

definitely an upgrade. Not a star, but our secondary is improved now.

Gotta love the irony. Porter pick-sixed Manning to win the Super Bowl for the Saints.

he's young, he adds speed and depth to a secondary that needs both badly, and we got him on a low-risk one-year deal-- probably for a fairly reasonable price, i'm hoping. . .

Wonder how much extra $$ he got for that super blow interception TD. Does this mean we can finally dump Goodman and his mortor moccasins. Now if we can find someone to fill the middle and stop those N.E. tight ends from killing us over the middle.

Oops schefter. Auto correct is cruel. I'm not to worried about bountygate with porter, not exactly a heavy hitter. He adds the two things we need most, speed and youth, in the secondary.

Look at it like this: the team, essentially, traded Bunkley for porter. I would do that every time.

To be clear: I like Porter, and have been a fan of adding him to the team (though possible suspensions of unknown length do give me pause). I would have thought he'd get a multi-year deal, but this is fine.

However.

We now have 14 defensive backs listed on the roster. Defensive tackles? Six, two of whom have under 2 years experience in the league and only two with more than 4 years (Vickerson and Warren).

I'm okay with the trade of low-risk-contract Porter in place of long-term-expense Bunkley...but we're gonna have to find a way to play all 14 DBs at the same time if we don't get to work on the D-line at some point.

The Denver Broncos’ decision to bring in former New Orleans cornerback Tracy Porter in for one year for $4 million means a few things:

Andre' Goodman is probably out of the picture. The Broncos were looking for an upgrade at right cornerback. Porter, 25, is considered a decent No. 2 cornerback and should be a good complement to Champ Bailey.

It likely means the Broncos will not continue to pursue Pittsburgh cornerback William Gay. It was probably an either/or situation and Porter is considered the better player.

Im ok with a one year deal. If he plays more than 12 games and shows value, we can talk longer term

"Even though Porter is signed for just one year and Bailey will turn 34 in June, the Broncos will probably draft a defensive tackle or a cornerback in the first round. Why? It’s more of an immediate need. I could still see cornerback being addressed early in the draft and maybe Denver will look for some more depth in free agency.

Oakland wanted Porter, but he was a bit too pricey. Porter played for new Raiders coach Dennis Allen in New Orleans."

3/1/2009. Signed a five-year, $20.4 million contract. (http://www.rotoworld.com/teams/contracts/nfl/den/broncos)The deal contains $9.8 million guaranteed. Another $4.8 million is available through incentives based on Goodman playing 75% of the defensive snaps. 2012: $4.62 million, 2013: $3.96 million, 2014: Free Agent

Since he won't be on the roster in 2012, he won't be earning the remaining $8.6 million. Thus the contract as it turns out equaled $11.4 million for 3 years, or roughly $3.8 million a year.

So, Goodman was getting close to what Porter is. The problem with the Porter signing is that it's only for 1 year. And then next year he'll be gone as a FA.

Almost guaranteed. He will want to be a #1 CB and be PAID like one (i.e. about $6 million+ per year). Since Champ is the #1 CB here he won't stay.

This is a one year rental. I would have liked to see a 2 or 3 year contract. We can't keep having turnover in the secondary. They need to get some good young players and build around them and keep them around for a few years and develop some continuity.

All correct. Since Porter won't be sticking around next year the Broncos will need to draft a CB.

And a DT of course. But they ALWAYS need to draft a DT and they never do so I've given up on them ever having an elite DT. :tsk:

Porter is a huge upgrade over Nogoodman. Nice signing, and along with Adams, makes the secondary very formidable now.
He is a one year rental, however if he plays well, he could play himself into a long term contract here.

Replace Porter's name with Bunkey's. We thought the same thing about him. But even if he does stay healthy and even if he does have a good season...his skill set can be aptly replaced by a solid draft pick. Porter is a solid #2, but I dont see him ever being elite.

The newest Broncos defensive back is looking for a fresh start and a chance at another Super Bowl ring.

And, as cornerback Tracy Porter passed newly-signed quarterback Peyton Manning in the team's Dove Valley complex Friday, he said he felt Denver could give him both of those things.

"This team definitely has the qualities to get back to a championship and that's something I definitely want to be a part of," Porter said.
