McDaniels' background on offense fits Orton just fine

It took quarterback Kyle Orton only a couple of hours spent with Broncos coach Josh McDaniels to realize things were going to be different than what he experienced in four years with the Chicago Bears playing for coach Lovie Smith.

McDaniels' background is on offense, and he directed the high-powered New England attack that set NFL records in 2007. Smith is a defensive guru, and as a head coach, he made sure his teams were defense-first.

"It's different. And that's not taking anything away from a defensive head coach," Orton said. "There were a lot of game situations where we played it pretty safe and let your special teams and defense win it. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't."

The Broncos — and former quarterback Jay Cutler — were rarely able to play it safe, not with a defense that gave up more than 400 points each of the last two seasons.
Without making a judgment on Denver's defense under McDaniels, Orton said he expects Denver's offense to attack.

"I think we're going to score as many points as possible," Orton said. "That tends to suit my nature a little bit better."
