Broncos, 2009 Draft Countdown, 18th and 12th Picks
By Paul Myerberg
Denver moved into Chicago’s spot with the Jay Cutler trade, giving it two selections in the top 18. For better or worse, Cutler was the face of the franchise. Will the Broncos try to find their latest quarterback of the future with one of their first-round picks?

Team Needs
Denver has expressed confidence in Kyle Orton, but will surely consider taking a quarterback — perhaps in the first round, perhaps later in the draft. Given the Broncos’ defense, though, that may be a luxury. Linebacker is in dire need of an upgrade, leading many to believe the Broncos are targeting Rey Maualuga of U.S.C.. Still, it would be surprising if Denver passed on Mark Sanchez if he were still available.

Scott Wright’s Take
Scott Wright is the founder and president of Draft Countdown.com. He has been scouting players and evaluating the N.F.L. draft since 1993:

Denver’s motto is going to be “defense, defense and more defense.” Denver will consider Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji, L.S.U. defensive end Tyson Jackson, 3-4 outside linebackers Aaron Maybin of Penn St. and Everette Brown of Florida St., U.S.C. inside linebacker Rey Maualuga and Ohio St. defensive back Malcolm Jenkins. The Jay Cutler trade means U.S.C. quarterback Mark Sanchez could be a possibility as well.

Worst Broncos First-Round Pick of the Last 15 Years
The former Minnesota Golden Gopher Willie Middlebrooks was the 24th pick over all in 2001, but started only career game at cornerback over five seasons with the Broncos and 49ers. Also considered: WR Ashley Lelie (19th over all in 2002). Just missing the cut: QB Tommy Maddox, drafted 25th over all in 1992.
