Nostradamus could not have predicted the unfortunate events that have befallen our beloved franchise. What was supposed to be the start to a storybook fairy tale has been replaced by the unthinkable tragedy of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

Jerry Jones is snickering, Al Davis is cackling, and Mike Shanahan is… well, who knows what he’s thinking at this point. This is the type of media-driven circus Broncos fans used to point and laugh at while Shanahan ruled a tight ship. McDaniels is a liar. Cutler is a crybaby. Regardless of what side of the fence you reside in the McJaygate saga, today marks a sad day to Broncos fans worldwide.

Much like the retirement of Number 7 and the parting of Mike Shanahan, this day marks an important yet disappointing day in Denver Bronco history. But today is different. Both of those men had finished writing their own chapter in Bronco history. It seemed the next chapter belonged to Jay Cutler, the young, promising gunslinger Broncos fans were introduced to with the 11th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

He showed promise as a quarterback at the highest level, garnering an invitation to Hawaii in only his second full season as a starter in the league. He had a cannon for an arm and possessed a mystique that Bronco fans have been so lucky to have cheered for in John Elway. Jay Cutler could win you a game, but he could also make the pass that had Bronco Nation scratching their collective heads in disbelief. But through all the head scratchers, through all the “crybaby comments” and through all the heartbreaking losses, he seemed destined to be a Bronco for life. After all, he seemed to be heading in the right direction, and was the “franchise quarterback” the Bronco faithful had been waiting a decade for.

Enter Josh McDaniels. With his quarterback friendly system from the most successful franchise from the past decade, he was the man Pat Bowlen hired to take the reins from Mike Shanahan and guide Jay to the pinnacle of his career, the podium, and ultimately… Canton. But after only a few months, the two have annulled their relationship. At the end of a heated, tumultuous, and speculative engagement, the inevitable end has come to an unnecessary saga. Jay Cutler is gone, and the Broncos are left without their golden boy.

After the trade of Jay Cutler, that chapter will remain incomplete. Most, if not all, Broncos fans had an idea of how that chapter would be written. He would be the next great Bronco quarterback. The knight in shining armor, to snatch the franchise from the jaws of intolerable mediocrity and take them to the Promised Land, a taste that has long since faded since Denver’s last trip to the World Championship game.

That fairy tale is over. Now we are left to wonder “What if?” as long as Jay Cutler and Josh McDaniels remain employed by the NFL. Unfortunately, we will never know for sure. Regardless of how Cutler and McDaniels’ careers eventually unfold from here on out, there will always be the question of “What if?” in the back of our minds. Looking back on this day 10 years from now, this will likely be the turning point in the franchise, good or bad.

It’s now up to Josh McDaniels to write his own chapter, because he is now the face of the franchise. Only question is, without Cutler, will it be a fairy tale or a horror flick?

The funny thing was I wrote this a while ago, and for a while there I thought I'd never be able to use it.

I should have added a P.S. "It's now up to McDaniels and the neck beard to write their own chapter."
