Hurt by Johnny Cash and NIN is a sad one.

And that Sinead O'Connor song is the one I would choose to cry to if I wasn't so manly.

That friggin' Christmas Shoes song makes me feel like a little girl. I also agree with the "100 Years" pick. That one's sad.

Also:
Guns 'N Roses - "November Rain"
The Beatles - "Let It Be"
Weezer - "Perfect Situation"

And probably the saddest song I've ever heard:

Ben Folds Five - "Brick"

Let my hair grow long
let my nails go untrimmed
keep me in a room of sin

make no beauty of me
place no coins upon my lids
let my legacy
if there's one to see
be what i did

lonely bodies shall not be
some part of life
what I leave behind

well, it's about a young girl who gets pregnant by her boyfriend and the father of the girl goes after him with a shotgun and the girl runs in the path of the shot to save her boyfriend and gets killed herself. Pretty sad.

Here is an obscure one, but I don't know if its sad or disturbing:

The song is Old Man Jacob's Well by The Boogiemonsters.

The song is done in two parts, the first part is a young boy who is making his way home and decides to take a shortcut since it is getting dark and he wants to get home before the street lights come on so he doesn't get in trouble. Unfortunately, he runs into Old Man Jacob.

The second part is Old Man Jacob talking about how he can no longer resist the urges to murder young children and drop them in his well.

I think the Speed of Pain and Great Big White World are his saddest songs. The acoustic version of the Nobodies is pretty sad, and especially haunting after Michael Moore used it in Bowling for Columbine. Just a Car Crash Away is pretty depressing too. (I think you already posted that one.)

I can't argue with that, another song I think is pretty sad, acoustic and recorded, is The Man That you Fear (esp. if you listen to the ending) but not as sad as the ones you mentioned

by no means In the Shadow of the Valley of Death is his saddest but its very much up there

This thread was made for me. I'm convinced I was born with some kind of serotonin anomaly. props to nutshell and landslide.

edit: and who was that with the 'dreamweaver' action...that's kind of on the kris kristofferson 'when you get lost between the moon and new york city' level (arthur's theme) -- great melancholic song but not exactly a tearjerker. but cool as hell someone dug that one up

I have about 20 or so, why squeeze it into one post? Here's one on the AIC/TOTD tip.

saddest song ever.. hmm... romantic "come what may"... it may seem conquering but sometimes if things are not likely to happen, id rather not push through, there are tough times but we can only accept what we can take. :elefant:

I always thought that Enjoy the Silence by the Depeche Mode was a really sad song.

Sad but romantic at the same time. It's a different song for sure.As a big fan of Depeche Mode I can't agree more...

Most of their songs are romantic/sad...

Martin Gore likes talking about love, pain, suffering, religion and sex...Definitively romantic, isn't it? :D
Plus, the electro part of their music adds a special atmosphere...

Just check also :
- Leave In Silence
- THe THings You Said
- COndemnation
- Home (a really great song IMO... better than Enjoy The Silence)
- Goodnight Lovers
- Perfect
- Somebody
- Shake The Disease ...

I love sad songs :D
- Creep - Radiohead (especially an acoustic version... I think this song was made for me  )
- Boys Don't Cry - The Cure.
- Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word - Elton John

I think that Toby Keith song "That's My House" is about the saddest one ever.

That's my house and thats my car
That's my dog in my backyard
There's the window to the room
Where she lays her pretty head
I planted the tree out by the fence
Not long after we moved in
There's my kids that's my wife
Who's that man running my life
If i pulled in would it cause a scene
They're not really expecting me
Those kids have been through hell
I hear they've adjusted well
Turn around in the neighbors drive
I'd be hard to recognize in this pick up truck
It's just an old fixer up

Drive away one more time
Alot of things running through my mind
I guess these things change
Boy they never seem the same

That's my house and thats my car
That's my dog in my backyard
There's the window to the room
Where she lays her pretty head
I planted the tree out by the fence
Not long after we moved in
There's my kids that's my wife
Who's that man running my life yeahh

Great song, even though I'm not a huge Country fan.

Didnt read the whole thread but

He stopped loving her today..............FTW

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

(Chorus)
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good
