Right now, he is the one to beat since there is nobody who can compete with him. Lefty isn't going to do it. I admire him as an athlete, but as a human being he needs a lot more practice.

Tiger is really awesome. Watching him win the US Open last year with a torn ACL was incredible. I am not a golf nut, so it's just nice to watch a guy at his level own the rest of the field.
But yea, Jordan used to piss me off when he played. Until he went and sucked at baseball, then it felt ok to root for him when he went back to the NBA.

I think the reason a lot of people, including sneakers here, might not like him is the reason I do like him. Everything is dramatic with the guy. He makes it interesting to watch. Like Greg Norman. Or Seve Ballesteros. They are just fun to watch. Its the Drama.
Some of these young guys can compete with him I think. I hope its Anthony Kim. I really like this kid. He has a little flare for the dramatic in him too.

Like so many great young talents Anthony Kim needs to grow up. Where Tiger was mature way beyond his years, and was a top-notch professional right from the start, Kim is 180 degrees his opposite. Out partying all the time, drinking and missing practice rounds/showing up late.
Maybe he'll grow up soon, but if you don't like Woods' personality, you sure wouldn't like Kim's. :D Actually, I take that back. Kim is a "fun" guy. Probably everyone around him likes being around him, but he doesn't take his work as serious as Woods.
If he had the drive that Woods does, Kim has all the talent in the world, and could certainly compete with Woods.

There are a lot of athletes who have the talent to be great.
There are a lot of athletes who have the drive to be great.
But very few have both.
Every once in a while, there's an athlete that comes along that has incredible talent and unbelievable drive. Jordan was a rail-skinny kid who could score at will in the lane, but people dogged his defense. So he bulked up and honed himself into an All-NBA defender. Then he was a one man show only, so he hooked up with Phil Jackson, bought into the team concept and changed his game. Then his knees started to go so he developed an unstoppable fall-away jumper. He turned Scottie Pippen into an all-time great as well, and an even better defender than Jordan himself. He ground some players to dust and sharpened the games of the rest, so that when he needed a shot made, he knew Pax or Kerr had the will to make the shot. He hated to lose at golf, or cribbage, or tiddlywinks, and bought a pool table and practiced in all his spare time when one teammate housed him at a game of billiards once. He punched other players in practice.
Jordan hated to lose more than you loved to win, and that's why he beat you. Great talent, and unstoppable will. Dominique Wilkins was as talented as Jordan, just not as driven. Drexler too. There were plenty of guys with game, they just didn't have Jordan's will.
Golf is the same with Tiger. Players wilt with him in the field. Other guys take years to come back from knee surgery. Tiger had a top-10 finish and a win in starts #2 and #3 back from it. He was unstoppable as a young phenom, but didn't like Harmon taking credit for his swing, so he rebuilt it from the ground up just to spite him. It cost him victories in the interim, but nobody takes credit for Tiger. He fired his caddy for talking about him to the media. He keeps his friends close and everyone else outside the gates, like Jordan. You will never know him through the media, and that's the way he wants it. He's a control freak - everything that can be controlled will be controlled, and more than you think can be controlled.
He curses on the golf course. He throws clubs and tantrums. But that focuses him. His very next shot after chucking his club after playing out of a sandtrap? A tough 12 foot putt for par to save a stroke and eventually win this tourney.
Phil's in better shape this year, and there are some golfers out there that aren't afraid of Tiger and so might be able to take him in tournaments down the road. But Tiger's gonna take more than his fair share, because he always does, and because he simply will not be denied for long.
*shrugs* He's the greatest golfer that ever lived, and he proves it every time he steps out on a golf course. You don't have to like him, but you should appreciate him.
Any time you're watching the greatest to ever play, you should appreciate it. It just doesn't come around that often.

He hogs all the media coverage
Woods doesn't appear to be a showboat that seeks out attention like T.O. or ManRam, etc. so I don't blame Tiger for this but golf tournament coverage is almost unwatchable when he's in the tournament because the media slobbers over him the way they do Obama.
While some nobody sinks a 30-foot putt to take a five-shot lead, he gets about five seconds of coverage then about 10 minutes of TigerWorship (tm) before showing another contender sink a birdie putt. Then there's another 10 minutes of TigerWorship...
It's ruined golf coverage.

I have an immense amount of respect for Tiger Woods.
Okay, just think. You're with Butch Harmon, rated number one in the world, all of the fame imaginable. Nobody doubts you're the best in the game right now.
So what do you do?
You get better. Start from the ground up. Ditch the swing that got you there, change everything you've ever learned, just to get better. To reach the next level.
It's a struggle, but eventually, you're better than everybody else, and now you're in discussions as one of the best to play the game. Things are going great, again.
So what do you do?
Change it again. Risk everything you ever accomplished and tamper with the winning formula. Tiger wants to be the best golfer who ever lived. At this point, even if he didn't reach Nicklaus' record, he'd be the best in my book. Nobody has ever played the game with so much vigor, and then with so much talent at the same time. Nobody. He thinks something needs to be done, and so he does it. And it works. Sure, he's got an ego, but that's necessary after a certain time to stay on top.
Tiger takes risks, dangerous risks at that, to get better. He is never content with what he's got. To keep up with the competition, Tiger takes calculated risks with great tact and fantastic results to stay ahead of the curve. And he's setting the curve. It's a fantastic phenomenon that guys can't catch up to him.
He's just a winner.

I think your hate is geared more toward how the media portrays him instead of the man himself. You should just appreciate the fact that you are alive to witness the greatest golfer and perhaps one of the greatest competitors and athletes of all time. He has a lot more class then you give him credit for too. He's a great family man, does more for charity than most people would ever dream of, has never had any legal troubles, and is extremely classy to all his competitors. I really don't see the problem people have with him.

That's fine if there are a few of those in your panties from time to time, but shit stains on your mattress, the carpeting, the door knob, and your dog's weenie are what concern me.

Tiger Woods is a douche
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?id=4347419
Woods needs to clean up his act
Tiger Woods has outgrown those Urkel glasses he had as a kid. Outgrown the crazy hair. Outgrown a body that was mostly neck.
When will he outgrow his temper?
The man is 33 years old, married, the father of two. He is paid nearly $100 million a year to be the representative for some monstrously huge companies, from Nike to Accenture. He is the world's most famous and beloved athlete.
And yet he spent most of his two days at Turnberry last week doing the Turn and Bury. He'd hit a bad shot, turn and bury his club into the ground in a fit. It was two days of Tiger Tantrums -- slamming his club, throwing his club and cursing his club. In front of a worldwide audience.
A whole lot of that worldwide audience is kids. They do what Tiger does. They swing like Tiger, read putts like Tiger and do the celebration biceps pump like Tiger. Do you think for two seconds they don't think it's cool to throw their clubs like Tiger, too?
He's grown in every other way. He's committed, responsible, smart, funny and the most talented golfer in history. I just thought we'd be over the conniptions by now.
If there were no six-second delay, Tiger Woods would be the reason to invent it. Every network has been burned by having the on-course microphone open when he blocks one right into the cabbage and starts with the F-bombs. Once, at Doral, he unleashed a string of swear words at a photographer that would've made Artie Lange blush, and then snarled, "'The next time a photographer shoots a [expletive] picture, I'm going to break his [expletive] neck!"
He's grown in every other way. He's committed, responsible, smart, funny, and the most talented golfer in history. I just thought we'd be over the conniptions by now.
It's disrespectful to the game, disrespectful to those he plays with and disrespectful to the great players who built the game before him. Ever remember Jack Nicklaus doing it? Arnold Palmer? When Tom Watson was getting guillotined in that playoff to Stewart Cink, did you see him so much as spit? Only one great player ever threw clubs as a pro -- Bobby Jones -- and he stopped in his 20s when he realized how spoiled he looked.
This isn't new. Woods has been this way for years: swearing like a Hooters' bouncer, trying to bury the bottom of his driver into the tee box, flipping his club end over end the second he realizes his shot is way offline.
I can still remember the 1997 Masters -- arguably the most important golf tournament ever played. Woods, then 21, was playing the 15th hole on Sunday. He had just hit a fairway wood out of the rough and was watching it. A young boy came up from behind just to touch him -- just to pat the back of this amazing new superhero. That's when Tiger pulled the club way back over his head and slammed it down, nearly braining the kid he couldn't see behind him. And this was with a huge lead.
Look, in every other case, I think Tiger Woods has been an A-plus role model. Never shows up in the back of a squad car with a black eye. Never gets busted in a sleazy motel with three "freelance models." Never gets so much as a parking ticket. But this punk act on the golf course has got to stop. If it were my son, I'd tell him the same thing: "Either behave or get off the course."
Come to think of it, if I were the president of Nike, I'd tell him the same thing.
Put it this way: Will Tiger let his own two kids carry on in public like that?
I know what you're saying. We see more Tiger tantrums because TV shows every single shot he hits. And I'm telling you: You're wrong. He is one of the few on Tour who do it. And I keep wondering when PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem is going to have the cojones to publicly upbraid him for it.
Golf is a gentlemen's game. Stomping and swearing and carrying on like a Beverly Hills tennis brat might fly in the NBA or in baseball or in football, where less is expected, but golf demands manners. It's your honor. Is my mark in your way? No, I had 6, not 5. Golfers call penalties on themselves. We are our own police. Tiger, police yourself.
Tiger does a boatload of work for kids. He raises millions for his Tiger Woods Learning Center, which has helped teach thousands. But teaching goes the wrong way, too. Tiger is teaching them that if he can be a hissy hothead on the course, they can, too.
I remember Tiger's dad, Earl, telling a story. One day, when Tiger was just a kid, he was throwing his clubs around in a fuming fit when his dad said something like "Tiger, golf is supposed to be fun." And Tiger said, "Daddy, I want to win. That's how I have fun."
Well, it's not fun to watch.

LOL, I find this hate hilarious! You act like Tiger is the ONLY player to do this. It may seem like he does it the most but that is only because every camera if focusing on his every move during every tournament he is in. I've read things from people who actually attend these tournaments that Tiger is far from the only person to act like that on the course but since he's Tiger, that who all the haters will focus on.
Plus, you are an NFL fan Sneakers. It's pretty hypocritical for you to cheer on guys most of whom are probably way more vulgar than Tiger on the field but you blast Tiger for it. I also love how you ignore all the great philanthropic work Tiger does and the fact that he's never had any legal or character issues off the course but since like any great pro athlete, he shows a little emotion when something goes wrong, you act like he is the worst person in the world.
You will probably never see a pro golfer in your lifetime even close to his level of talent and accomplishment. It's a pity that instead of sitting back and enjoying it you just stew over your hatred for him. Unless he slept with your girlfriend or something I don't see the hate.
Two points.
First, the author of the article above clearly doesn't know much about golf, as he refers to Bobby Jones (the most famous amateur golfer) as a professional golfer.
Second, Tiger is a target because he is one of the greatest of all time. When criticizing him, does anyone consider that there is likely NEVER been a golfer in the game that has had as many pictures snapped in the middle of their swings? That due to his popularity, he has brought new 'fans' to the tournaments that don't recognize the etiquette that golf fans are supposed to follow?
We live in a society that finds it so easy to attack and find fault in others, rather than looking past the sound bites.

I'm sure I have read his stuff, but the name doesn't ring a bell right away. Bobby Jones is pretty famous for his decision to never turn pro.

I don't have camera's clicking in the middle of my swing and drop an F-bomb if I pull a drive into the woods.

Rick Riley is one of the most self-important, high-horse writers I have read in a while. I had always heard about what a great writer he is but he doesn't do much for me. Se seems to just like to sit on his pedestal and point out what others are doing wrong.

There. I feel much better now.
I can't stand the man. He reminds me too much of Tom Brady.
I hate him because of his arrogance, his smugness, his sense of entitlement, his unappreciativeness (is that a word?)
What else makes me really not like him?
He whines and swears up and down the golf course when things don't go his way.
He doesn't sign autographs, even at charity events.
He hogs all the media coverage
He is unlikable
I can't stand all the stupid little puns people create with his name...its obnoxious!
Yells at fans who take pictures of him (like they have to ask permission or something) because it might make him miss a shot...well if you're that ******* good you should be able to hit a golf ball while being exposed to external stimuli.
On a completely unrelated note....Michelle Wie is hot.
Sneak...I have no issues with your post. :salute:
Most (all) of it is true regarding, dude...
See, I told you he was a jerk :eviltongue:
Sneak, you called it months before it came out. Effing jerk. His wife is a badass though. Knocks a mofo out with a golf club. Dayuuuuuuum!
Anyone check out the apology presser?
I watched it on CNN which followed it by a presser of his porn mistress. She was lied to, she thought she was the only one, well besides his WIFE. Poor little dumbass.
Effing women are stupid, myself included at times. Stop the stupidity.
