“(CBS4/AP) DENVER The Colorado Rockies have abandoned their plans to sell World Series tickets in person by a lottery system, opting instead for online purchases only.

The team announced the new plan on Wednesday, saying online sales would be the more fair….

”Prices range from $65 to $250 and are limited to four per person. Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) are scheduled in Denver Oct. 27-29.

Club president Keli McGregor said the Rockies consulted with Major League Baseball before making the change….

Rockies spokesman Jay Alves insisted the club's computers were ready to go and said the staff is prepared for any crashes….

"We are comfortable and confident in what we have to allow the most fans to get the most tickets we can possibly distribute," he said.

Some fans don't agree and are very upset with the decision. Barb Whittemore said she doesn't even have a computer and now won't have a chance to get tickets.

"This isn't equal at all," Whittemore said. "There are a lot of people that aren't even going to have a chance."

"It’s not going to be just scalpers in Denver," another fans said. "It's going to be scalpers from all over the country because anybody can get online."

Peter Bishop, 32, had planned to start work late Monday so he could be in line at Coors Field at 7:30 a.m. for the lottery. Along with friends and family members, he wants eight seats, ideally for Game 3….

“One season ticket holder who identified himself only as Jim was offering two Game 4 tickets on Craigslist for $1,500 each. He said he will be at Coors Field for the World Series but couldn't use all his tickets.

The ticket reseller StubHub already has sold more than 700 tickets for Game 3 at an average price of $718, spokesman Sean Pate said. The cheapest sale was an upper right field reserved seat that sold for $348; the most expensive sale was $3,000 for an infield box seat, Pate said.

Cleveland and Boston are still competing for the American League title, but World Series tickets at Fenway Park and Jacobs Field are already selling on StubHub. The average price on StubHub was $1,556 for a seat in Boston and $472 in Cleveland, Pate said.”

So what’s YOUR take on this new policy? While I like the convenience of online shopping for tickets for anything from sporting events to rock concerts, slamming the door on the local ticket office option for local Rockies fans doesn’t sit well with me.

Take this scenario (this is my take): A loyal local fan, who has supported the team since the inception—through thick and thin, through only partially filled stands—finds himself out in the cold for possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be at Coors Field during the World Series. Meanwhile, some well-heeled bloke from 2,000 miles away—and possibly doesn’t even like the Rockies—gets his seat, thanks to online scalpers.

I am really sorry to see them do this. Scott Hastings and Alfred Williams were talking about this today on their radio show today, and they said that even though one person is limited to 4 tickets for each of the three games here, it is a well known fact that the brokers pay people to sit at computers purchasing tickets that the broker ends up selling WAY over the face value. This will also let anybody anywhere purchase tickets and sell them for ridiculous prices on ebay, etc.

I understand season ticket holders get first shot, but this is what some of them are already doing!!!!!

Tonight on Ch 4 news, Jim Benneman said that someone (I believe he said on Craiglist is selling a rockpile ticket which will go for $65.00, for something like $17,800??????????? Of course, I can't believe any one would pay that price, but I am sure that person will make a very nice profit.

The Rockies spokesperson said this was the easiest way to do it - OF COURSE, it is easier for the Rockies personnel to not have to be there waiting on people wanting to buy tickets, and of course, all games will be sold out, so who suffers - the people who will not be able to purchase tickets who really want to attend the games because a lot of the tickets will be in the hands of brokers, scalpers, or season ticket holders who will make A LOT of money.

I THINK IT STINKS. I sent an email to the Rockies today stating my feelings on this.

Hear-HEAR, Carol! I think it stinks as well--and I'm only a newbie Rockies fan. I just feel that the Rockies' most loyal are getting crapped on by this indifferent act.

As an aside, I listen to "Scott and Al," as well. Ain't they a HOOT?!

They comprise my favorite local sports show. By contrast, I can barely abide that priggish attitude of Sandy Clough in the mornings. I don't know... he just comes off as conceited, the way he appears to hold callers in contempt.

Just my take...

Huh? Did she hit the Lottery or sumpin'???? :D

For the record, my little reptilian frin <gol>, I'm not against online sales--not in the least. I'm just sayin' that they should not have shut down the local (Coors Field) ticket offices at the same time. It would have been nice of the management to hold back a few thousand tickets, reserved for the locals, who are more than willing to brave the long lines to go see their home team play in the Series.

Agreed? Agreed! I just KNEW you would agree, young lady!

Yes, the Rockies' most loyal are getting crapped on. Sure would not look too "cool" if the stands were half full. Of course, all tickets would have been sold, BUT maybe all tickets will not be used, as the "ordinary" fan CANNOT afford the broker or scalper's price.

Oh yeah, Scott and Al are great. Clough does not seem to be as bad as he used to be.

Why couldnt they only allow online purchases by those with Colorado zip codes? That would at least keep it local. Unfortunately, theres little that can be done about the scalpers. What made them decide to do this? Why couldnt they do both?

The reason I heard is that it would be easier this way?????????????? At a time when the Rockies' organization has just got back the support they once had for the Rockies, and then lost, you would think they would be smarter than this. Throw EASIER out the window, and do whatever it takes for the Rockies' fans - NOT THE BROKERS AND SCALPERS:mad:

Oh the stands will be packed alright. That is a given. There are plenty enough millionaires around to make sure of that--more than enough to fill up some 50,000 seats, many times over. Some members of the "Hollywood Elite" (who like to be seen at big-time sporting events), to cite one example, would not even *cough* at a $6K price for the more choice seats.

The day after, it will be forgotten. Perhaps their team isn't even playing. To them, it was just another "happening." "THE" place to be at the time.

Meanwhile, there will be many loyal Rockies fans--real fans--who will have been shut out to an event that they would remember for a lifetime.

Does this mean that I'm against the wealthy? Heaven's NO! I'm an astute believer in the free enterprise system. I'm a conservative. I believe in being rewarded for individual achievment.

But, still, like you, I think the way this is all is going down just... well, "stinks."

And I think that the Rockies players, themselves (to include Coach Hurdle), would agree. But they could never speak out against a decision handed down by Management, of course.

They are just the players, as we are just the fans.

Well just so you know. The Tribune was in a court case for being involved in scalping tickets by selling unused tickets. They won this case. But you have to also remember this is Chicago. Another thing is that in 2005, Jerry Reinsdorf used the WS to boost season ticket sales. By buying season tickets for 2006, you could buy WS tickets for 2005.

I agree, in part, Lex... at least as far as I understand what you meant by the above. BTW, I don't think I've "met" you. Pleased to meet you, Lex.

I agree that it is difficult to do much against the scalpers. Yet, I don't think that online sales should be limited by zip code. Like you, I think they should have made an effort to do BOTH!

In summary, make online tickets available while, at the same time, hold back a designated number of tickets for those willing to purchase in person, at the local ticket office--in person, on location.

Any surplus tickets could be re-released for online availability.

The bottom line is this: I'm not seeing much evidence that the Rockies management is making an effort to pay back the local fans over the years who have supported them--through thick and thin.

And, as Carol has stated, "this stinks."

I just hope it doesn't turn into a "curse."

<don't mind me, that was Rebecca speaking>

Hey, if I can get a couple of tickets to the Rockpile for me and Snapp, it's great.

Bear in mind that the majority of sporting events (including the NFL event in London) in Europe ONLY have online sales.

And those are bigger stadiums than what you have in the USA.

Also, given what the weather is like in Denver at the moment, do you really think opening themselves up for a lawsuit because someone got hypothermia waiting for a ticket is in the best interests of the club.

Stay at home, in the warm, with your comp, and buy your tickets.

Giants Stadium 80,242 is the next largest, but there are a couple of stadiums in Australia that are bigger.

Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome 64,035 in Minneapolis is the biggest stadium for baseball.

If it was assured that all Rockies fans would be able to get tickets online, that would be different. But, after the tickets are all sold online, we will see the fallout - brokers, scalpers selling the tickets for RIDICULOUS prices. MLB, not the Rockies, have already set ridiculous prices = regular season tickets in rockpile - $5.00 - NOW for World Series - $65.00 - just how much over and above the prices set by MLB can Rockies Fans afford?????

If a season ticket holder wants to charge that much, that's up to them.

This is something different for people to get used to. And it's a proven point that people don't like change.

There will always be scalpers, there will always be people who can't go to a game, and there will always be people who have more money than others, and who can afford the scalpers prices.

Honestly I hate this thread. Its the World Series we should expect this. Without the internet I wouldn't be able to even have a CHANCE at getting tickets and I think that I am pretty deserving of a seat. Seriously, if people want to see the Rockies in the WS badly enough they WILL buy from scalpers. Its just a matter of how bad they want it.

EDIT: Let me add this. Just because people dont live in Colorado doesnt mean they aren't fans. People like Kim who watch the games every night, and has been since long before the win streak, deserve a chance at tickets too. I think its obvious from this message board that there are Broncos fans spread out all over the world and the same thing goes for the Rockies. If Kap has the opportunity to come watch a sports team that she has shed tears over and watched through thick and thin in the World Series then she should be able to do so. Besides that the internet will be a bit safer way to sell these tickets. Can you imagine the crowds etc that would be at Coors Field? To me that isnt the safest idea and really, its not hard for people to access a computer. This is 2007, the internet and online ticket sales is the way to go.

Snappin - of course you, as well as all true Rockies fans deserve a chance to get a ticket to the WS. It is not a matter of, if people want to see the Rockies in the WS badly enough they will buy from scalpers, but will they be able to afford to buy from scalpers. It is one thing to be able for you or any true Rockies fan to be able to buy a ticket at face value, but if Kap is not able to get tickets online at face value, how much can you guys afford to pay a scalper? That is the question for not only you guys, but any Rockies fan who will have to face that.

Unfortunatly this is the world we live in and scalpers buy as many ticket as they can and sell them for insane prices. I am used to it, however it sucks for Rockies fans. They finally get to see their team in the World Series and because people jack up the price, some fans aren't able to go. At least you can watch it on TV, yet nothing beats actually being at the game.

200 state workers part of plan to buy Rockies tickets with EOC computers
written by: Jeffrey Wolf , Web Producer
reported by: Deborah Sherman , Investigative Reporter

CENTENNIAL – A 9Wants to Know investigation has uncovered a plan by 200 state workers to buy Rockies World Series tickets using fast, state-owned supercomputers.

The computers are at the Colorado Emergency Operations Center in Centennial.

The plan was hatched in an e-mail sent out on Friday morning. The e-mail says they were going to start at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning. The tickets are set to go on sale on ColoradoRockies.com on Monday at 10 a.m.

The e-mail was sent at 11:41 a.m. on Friday by David Holm, who had recently been the acting director of the Division of Emergency Management.

The e-mail was sent to all employees in his department, the Department of Local Affairs.

The e-mail states that Susan Kirkpatrick, the executive director of the Department of Local Affairs, has approved their plan to buy World Series tickets on the state's computers.

"I need volunteers to help push the buttons in attempting access. You will need to use break time, lunch time or leave time to do this and the only real perk I can offer right now is that if someone does not pay for their tickets within 3 days, you will get first crack at them," said Holm in the e-mail.

Holm says they will be using the personal credit cards from Kirkpatrick and Holm, and not their own.

The plan was to buy tickets until they were sold out or when the department had as many as it wanted.

Click here to read the entire e-mail.

The Colorado EOC opened two years ago. There are at least 30 computers in the center, which are supposed to be used by local, federal and state officials in emergencies.

The group Colorado Ethics Watch says the computers should not be used for personal gain.

"Even if it were open to all state employees, it's still a misuse of public resources. Taxpayers did not invest in an emergency response center so that state employees could use it for their own personal advantage and buy baseball tickets," said Chantelle Taylor with Colorado Ethics Watch.

9Wants to Know spoke with Kirkpatrick and she said the plan has now been squashed.

She said in retrospect, it was not the best idea to use the EOC computers, even though her IT personnel told her it would not compromise security.

Kirkpatrick says that means state employees will now buy Rockies like everyone else on Monday. She said they are allowed to use the state computer they normally use because she doesn't want them leaving work.

Interesting. I remember when the White Sox were in the world series, everyone at where I was working at the time was trying to get tickets-- Cubs and Sox fans alike. Cubs fans were going to sell their tickets to White Sox fans at a healthy profit.

Anyway, I have a question. Who funded the building of Coors Field? Im guessing it was taxpayers? If thats the case, perhaps they need to look at putting stipulations into the lease agreement that exists with the Rockies that outlines how situations like this will be handled. Public funds werent earmarked to be misused in the case of the emergency computers but and depending on ones perspective they werent earmarked for a stadium so that people can be taken advantage of.

On August 14, 1990, the voters in the six counties approved a 1/10th of a 1% sales tax increase 187,539 to 157,954 votes (54% to 46%). The legislation provided that once Denver secured a MLB franchise, the sales tax increase would go into effect to provide the necessary funding for a new stadium. When the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club was approved by MLB on July 5, 1991, construction began on Coors Field.

200 state workers part of plan to buy Rockies tickets with EOC computers

CENTENNIAL – A 9Wants to Know investigation has uncovered a plan by 200 state workers to buy Rockies World Series tickets using fast, state-owned supercomputers.

The computers are at the Colorado Emergency Operations Center in Centennial.

The plan was hatched in an e-mail sent out on Friday morning. The e-mail says they were going to start at around 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning. The tickets are set to go on sale on ColoradoRockies.com on Monday at 10 a.m.

Rockies: System went down because of attack

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies say tickets for the World Series will again be sold online starting Tuesday at noon after an attack brought down the Web site on Monday.

Rockies Spokesperson Jay Alves said on Monday night that ColoradoRockies.com was the victim of an "external malicious attack" that caused a system-wide outage with Paciolan.

Paciolan is Major League Baseball's ticket vendor. The outage impacted all of its North American customers.

The Rockies suspended the sale of tickets on Monday around noon after the system went down.

The Rockies initially said the system went down because of the heavy traffic to the Web site. They said there were 8.5 million hits on the Rockies Web site after the tickets went on sale.

"It's been an extremely frustrating morning for our fans and the entire Rockies organization," said Keli McGregor, the Rockies team president.

The Rockies said less than 500 seats were sold after the tickets went on sale and before the system-wide outage.

An angry crowd gathered outside Coors Field on Monday in reaction to the ticket outage. They shouted "We want tickets" when Alves told the crowd they were working with Paciolan on the problem.

Alves says they will not be selling the tickets at Coors Field.

The Rockies said fewer than 20,000 tickets - less than half of Coors Field's 50,449 seats - would be available for general sale in each World Series game in Denver. The remaining seats are allotted to season-ticket holders, the two teams and Major League Baseball.

Yea I saw that.
Good stuff.
They also said they have a backup plan.
Which could mean you have to go down to the Box Office's at the stadium.
That would suck

and I've read that its at noon.
Thats noon mountain time right?

At least 250,000 of those must have been from me on the 2 comps at work!

Another 500k hits from my 4 personal pcs at home :)

They are just lucky I didn't do what I had planned...

When it wasn't loading right I thought about writing a program that would constantly every couple of minutes auto load the web page so that I could just watch to see if it came up rather than click it myself. If I had done that it would have been even more hits :)

You could send it to me and I could run it on the dirty browser at work!

Rick
10-23-2007, 09:27 AM
LOL. I currently actually have it built just need to put a pause button in it actually so if a page does come up you can stop the refresh cycle as that would be pissy to have it refresh just as you hit submit :)

Program has 3 different tabs, each with it's own web page loaded in it.

I can't really do anything with it yet though until I have the 3 links they are going to use for each game then I will assign the link to each windows form to load that certain url on that tab.

Then every about minute and a half it will reload the web site on each of those tabs.

I also wouldn't mind going in there and seeing if I can't get it so that the tabs themselves switch around so that while you are sitting there you don't have to click the tabs to see which has loaded it will just cycle through the tabs every 15 seconds or so but I need to play with that part.

So I will get what I can done on it until noon so I can get the 3 links and pop them in then compile the program.

Have to see how the server is working too. If it is going like yesterday then the program would have merit, other wise it wouldn't be needed.

Rick
10-23-2007, 10:03 AM
If you want to see a rough of what it is you can download the file here:

http://uncharteddevelopments.com/tickets.exe

It has 3 place holder web pages being loaded currently. Refreshes ever about a min and a half. I can adjust that in any direction.

Can pause and start back up.

Only real benefit is if it its like yesterday you wont have to be sitting there hitting refresh it will do that for you. Just need the 3 links for the games themselves and I should beable to have all 3 games being loaded at once without the need for seperate browsers.

Not real fancy but it works, now just remains to be seen if it is even worth using depending on how the system works today.

Rick

I can see they "really" have the system working now. So ya, um, ya.

THose 400 people werent' fans until the Rockies started winning. They didn't follow them this entire season during the dreadful 1-9 road trip. They probably have no idea we swept the Yankees and beat the Sox in their crip 2 games to 1 earlier in the year.
