Just a heads up. There are a few kinks still being worked out. If they are worked out today, then the upgrade could be as soon as tonight. Because of the number of posts on the forum, part of the upgrade will take a number of hours. So, while I will try and have it done overnight, there could be some time when the forum is offline. You should see a message stating such.

There are quite a few changes with vBulletin 4. Many behind the scenes, but also many changes to the interface. Over the next few days I will try and find the time to start putting together a list of changes and a cross reference of sorts. For instance, there is no longer a link to "User CP" on the navigation bar at the top. Instead, you click on the "Settings" link in the upper right and it brings you to the new version of the User CP with subscribed threads, MHS messages, etc.

There is a greatly improved mobile site (not apps, but a mobile optimized site to use on your mobile browser.)

It has a full featured editor that makes it easier to post stuff like tables/grids or even normal posts. It includes a simpler to use video embedder -- including Hulu, Google and others, not just youtube.

It has the option for users to create their own blogs.

The upgrade needs to be done, for security and compatibility reasons, but in addition there will be some nice benefits we will see from the upgrade.

I'm still not 100% sure when the upgrade will take place, which is why I'm giving a general heads up of "soon."

Looks like we are going to try the upgrade tonight. It will start late tonight or early tomorrow AM. Hopefully, downtime will only be a few hours and mostly overnight.

What am I going to do for entertainment in the middle of the night. Guess I'll have to get caught up on my backlog of basketball games.

It's the end of the world as we know it.... It's the end of the world as we know it....

Site is probably going down around 11:00 EST and will be offline for 3-6 hours (best guess). One of the processes needs to reindex posts and do some other things like that and with over a million posts that takes several hours.

No.

There are still a few things that have to be sorted out. Some things that looked/worked ok the test site, but aren't quite right now. Hopefully, all/most of that will be sorted out today.

There are also some indexing and data upgrades going on in the background that are still running and will be fore a while, so the board is running a little slow because of that.

Not trying to complain. I understand upgrades happen.

Is there any way to have a "standard style" similar to the work freindly one??? It seems all the best things about vbulletin were talen away.

We have a new worker friendly style, but in terms of having one that looks like vB 3, that's not really possible.

If you post in the uprgrade questions/problems threads some of the specific things you are talking about, I might be able to address some of them. vBulletin made some fairly major changes to how navigation and others stuff works with vB 4, which is why I've waited about two years to upgrade to it, because I knew it would be a shock to the system for many of us.

I don't like change either. I understand.

I'm serious about listing some of the features that you think went away, because in most cases it's probably just changed where/how you get to it. Also, in some cases, we might be able rearrange some things to make it easier to get to find.

I actually like it so far. I like that hitting the "reply with quote" button just adds the qoute to the quick reply box. Makes it that much smoother and faster. I do miss a "last page" button.

I do fear we will become a little like the other place though now that "high 5s" are given a value and tracked. I fear people will start comparing their number.

Where are you not seeing the "last page" button? I know I have seen it on most threads. It may be that they don't show the button until the number of pages goes past how many they list individually (1, 2, 3, 4... Last).

On the High Fives, that must have switched back tot he default. That will get added to the list to fix and we will go back to no rep/mhs/hi-five points as we were before. Previously, I had removed the "point total" from the User CP and had a query that auto reset all point totals to 1 (or maybe zero) every x minutes. I'll re-implement some version of this type of fix.

I was thinking more on the new posts page. Maybe it wasn't ther before I might be thinking of a different site. I thought there used to be a fairly large "last page" button next to the thread page total. I could be wrong.

As far as the high 5 totals I think it's probably a good idea to go back to the way it was. To much penis measuring when point totals are given. Just my opinion.

You're right on the new posts page. That is rather strange. As that is typically the same functionality as other searches that could return a LOT of pages, I find it strange they don't have a "last page" button. I'll check on that with vBulletin. It does look like they added a "Jump to page" option if you click on the area that says something like "page 1 of 10", but it still isnt' as straight forward as just clicking last.

I can DIG this!!!!!!

I'm a member of a forum that uses this kind of style. SO it's not a complete shock, but coming from a guy who just learned to embed a youtube vid a week ago. I ain't complaining for nothing.

The only thing I couldn't find was the User CP. Tned then said just click settings. Now I'm gravy. Also love the added features and quick quoting to the quick reply.

I like it, and it only took a few to figure out where everything was.

Thanks Mo, I couldn't find the User CP either!

Every since I saw VB 4 the change from User CP to settings has irritated me. The settings link even goes to a page that's still called usercp.php. Considering they have thousands of forums out there and millions of forum users that were used to User CP, I'm not sure why they felt the need to change. I guess they figure for new people, settings was more intuitive when it came to the settings sub menus in the User CP.

To ease the transition, I'm going to see about maybe hard coding a User CP link in the navbar, because I think that's the number one thing that's going to trip people up.

I didn't think to click on "settings" because I didn't want to change any settings while I was already trying to get used to new settings.

Any chance you could override that and just change the word?

I'll check on that. Most "words" or "phrases" in vBulletin can be changed pretty easily through a phrase manager (at least they could in the old VB).
