Based on a recent, ongoing argument with my wife and brother-in-law...I was curious what the masses thought.

Who was/is the better overall artist/entertainer?

I like all three, Petty, Mellencamp and Springsteen, in that order.

My brother-in-law thinks Springsteen hung the moon, but he also thinks Kid Rock has the best rock voice ever.......whatta fag.......

If you've never been to a Springsteen concert, you really haven't been to a concert.

Gotta say I'm surprised Petty is leading so far. Tells me how many potheads hang here

My stance is I like all three...but based on career success...I have to say Springsteen has done a lot more.

I don't think Petty accomplished more, l just like their music more than the others. The fact that Springsteen is still relevent is a testiment to what he's been able to accomplished.......

Springsteens music makes me think of American lagers like budweiser, which are disgusting.
Petty's music makes me think of weed which is not disgusting.
Mellancamp makes me think I should change the radio station.

There are many American lagers that are very good.

Not allowing it to sway my stance, but I've met Petty before...and he is a complete a$$hole.

Springsteen is a total tool who makes bad music. He thinks that by adding additional instruments he is improving the overall quality. Just a lot of underwhelming noise.

I've never really had much of an opinion on Mellencamp.

I grew up on Tom Petty. Guy has made a ton of great music. Seems to be the runaway winner from my perspective.

Tom Petty is the only one in that group who's music has been timeless to me. I have and still enjoy a Tom Petty classic.

I know people have their opinion on the "popularity" of music, but if I look at record sales, Grammy's, etc...

...It's a no brainer for Springsteen. Again, I like all 3 equally, but it's hard to argue what "The Boss" has done

Petty by miles.

They all kinda suck honestly. I'd be more inclined to listen to Tom Petty as he has some nice solid, non-abrasive singles.

As for Cougs, I like Jack and Diane but that's all. I don't like Springsteen.

But i'm not going to be hurt if I never have to hear any song by any of the three ever again.

But I would say that Springsteen is easily the best performer. Some working class music right there.

Well, if you going by showmanship than yea Springsteen is the guy. But i took the question as who was the best artist and i think Petty is by far the better song writer.

Tom Petty in a landslide. I love me some Tommy

Petty is the only artist of the 3 that if I heard their song on the radio, I would stop flipping channels and listen.

I'm really into Adele lately. she's got that one hit going on now, something fire.... thought it was gay and irritating but I think it's growing on me. I want Tink to blast it for me at the next tailgate.

wait, does that mean that I am gay and irritating?

There are selected tracks from Springsteen and Camp that i dont mind. But overall Petty has a lot more songs i dig and "Dont Come Around Here No More" is still one of my favorite songs and videos of alltime.

If you're asking for musical tastes, then my vote is for Petty.
If I hear "Jack and Diane" ONE MORE TIME, I'm going jam a pen into my corroded artery.

I think my question was vague. I was looking more to see who everyone thought has had the more prolific career as opposed to who people prefer

I'd go with Petty, than The Boss, then Mellencamp.

Petty's discography seems to span more time than The Boss, thus spanning more generations of listeners (I could be wrong). I mean, if you want to go an album sales alone, then I don't know why you would need a poll to figure that out.

Probably Springsteen then, but they've both been around for a few decades, done the Super Bowl, etc. Kind of splitting hairs to say one is more prolific than the next.

Springsteen's been more influential and will probably be rememberd longer and with more critical aproval but I like Tom Petty's music better personally.

Mellencamp doesn't belong on the list. Petty and Springsteen are NFL teams, Mellencamp is a CFL franchise.

Bruce no doubt. In 50 years Bruce's legacy will outshine that of Tom Petty. He has a bigger following among people that aren't old dudes, and while Tom Petty has some sweet singles, they don't have the same punch as alot of The Boss' catalogue.

Tom Petty is a step up from The Eagles in terms of nice easy listening music in that there's some substance, but it's still not entirely deep stuff. The Eagles are great to listen to on a drive on a sunny summer evening, or at the beach smoking some dank weed with your pals, but there's not really much substance to it (other than the illegal kind) that elevates it from "good to listen to to chill out every once in a while" to "good to listen to any time." I love The Eagles, but they aren't life-changing and offer nothing more but easy listening IMO and that's why I like to listen to them. Tom Petty has more depth to his songwriting than The Eagles, but it still doesn't eclipse that of Bruce.

There's a profundity to Bruce's stuff where I can picture it being somewhat life altering to someone. Say i'm watching a movie about some kids who go on a road trip. In the montage where they're having fun and enjoying the trip I can hear something like Tom Petty and The Eagles playing. But in a montage where the movie is coming to a close and they're coming of age or learning a deep life lesson of some sort, I can hear The Boss playing in the background. That's what gives Springsteen the 1-up on Tom Petty to me.

It's what separates Bob Dylan from John Denver. Dylan's are hard to come by, but there are tons of John Denver's.

While i dont think Petty will really leave a legacy i dont think Bruce will either except maybe to those diehard fans. To me, he was just a guy who got hot in the 80's and had girls cooing over him like he was the Menudo brothers or something. Outside of "Philidelphia" i cant think of any song he has written in the last 15 years that is memorable.

Yeah, I don't like his music. But his albums have reached much more critical acclaim than Petty's. Nebraska, Born To Run, and Born in the USA are pretty beloved. But I see a whole lot more modern, up-and-coming bands who are influenced by Springsteen than Petty.

Maybe the most underrated rock band of all time?

Petty, The Boss, Mellencamp. 1, 2 and 3.

All 3 have music that I can listen to at any time. Timeless music! But I find that I like voted based on how many songs I like from each artists. Petty by far. Though I could karaoke all 3 for days. :)

PEACE!!!

Check out his new album. Nothing that will get radio play, but damn good.

That being said...have Petty or Mellencamp done much in the last 15? I liked Petty's last one, but like Bruces new one...nothing you'll hear on the radio. Not nowadays anyway.

Petty had an album in 2010. They are currently on a world tour, or preparing to go on one.

Mellencamp also had an album released in 2010, and is touring, or recently returned from a tour.

Bruce is kickin' it on Fallon's show tonight btw. He and Jimmy did the coolest intro.
