Dumervil on defense: We’re going to be nasty
by Lindsay Jones

DOVE VALLEY — Broncos defensive end (or outside linebacker, depending on how coaches choose to use him in a 3-4 scheme) met with reporters after the team’s voluntary conditioning workout Tuesday morning.

Dumervil adeptly sidestepped questions about Jay Cutler — who is another member of the 2006 draft class — but made a bold prediction about the team’s revamped defense.

“We’re going to be nasty. You give us a hammer and we’ll nail them all,” Dumervil said.

Dumervil said he already likes some of the free agency additions the team made in the last three weeks, especially a guy like safety Brian Dawkins.

“We’re excited, we’ve gotten a lot of proven starters from other teams,” Dumervil said. “So it’s good to kind of have all those pieces of the puzzle come to gether. Now all we have to do is go through OTAs and camp and get everyone jelled together. [We have to be] more physical. More nasty. I haven’t been a part of a good defense in the NFL yet, so that’s one of my main goals is to come out here and be dominant.”

Dumervil played coy when asked about the switch to a 3-4 (note to Elvis: Josh McDaniels has already confirmed the team will be switching to that scheme). But he noted that his primary goal won’t change, regardless of he’s playing as a down lineman or as an outside linebacker.

“I like to hit quarterbacks, that’s what I want to do. Hopefully I can continue doing that,” Dumervil said.

Only if we get lucky, or trade Cutler for a bunch of high draft picks. :D

2009 Broncos Defense: Nasty like a head cold!

Nasty like a vicious sneeze!

Nasty like...

Man, I'm just not seeing straight lines here.

Perhaps someone should explain to Dumervil that since there have been no practices and he probably hasn't even seen an example of a diagram or flowchart of the sort of defense they're gonna be running, it's pretty tough to take him seriously.

"We added proven vets." Okay, we did that a coupla years in a row, to obviously great success.

Maybe he can say it because Nolan's been a great DC before? Sure, with great personnel. He was unable to fix the SF defense in 4 years even once he fired his old DC and took over himself. He also got into personal arguments with guys in the locker room, made petty remarks about them to the media, and generally made an ass out of himself.

I advocated bringing him in when it was Shanny's ship because with Cutler and the offense we were an adequate D away from the playoffs, and then if we could fix our scoring issues we'd be over the top. And Nolan's a far better DC than Slowik.

But with Chris Simms at the reins, I think Doom would find out very quickly that it's not as easy to pin your ears back and chase the QB when you're only scoring 14 points a game.

And things can get "nasty" in a hurry.

Hopefully we don't have to find that out.

Next year was always gonna be an adjustment year, even in the best of circumstances. Ton of new players, new schemes on both sides of the ball, new coaches and a brutal schedule.

So let's not get talking about being nasty just yet, Elvis. I like your enthusiasm, but after the offseason we've had your prognostications seem a bit like fools gold right now.

Way too much shakeup in the scouting department, and too close to the draft, to expect a good draft, even if we were able to get a lot of extra draft picks. I hope we go best value over need.

Outside the Goodman's getting canned, care to allude to the big shake-up's in the scouting department? You do know that the team goes through a professional scouting service as well. . . right? The scouts here are still required to see a number of games for a prospect in person before they even are allowed to do a write-up on them and submit it in summation to the rest of the player personnel delegates. The Goodman's were fired. Big deal. The evaluation process remains the same. We will be fine.

Hard to get much "nastier" than last year...
I'd be happy with a nice simple "We're going to make some improvements and have a better plan than last year" from Dumerville. These guys never learn to keep their mouths shut. Get results on the field and no words will be needed. Like that old quote from the Van Halen Live CD liner..."What is understood need not be discussed..."

I will say this much for Dumervil, I think he could excel as an OLB in a 3-4 scheme. He's never had quite enough size in my opinion as a DE in the 4-3 especially against the run. Allowed to move around a bit, he could become disruptive.

BUT, the 3-4 starts with the NT and I'm not sold on Denver's personnel fitting so well for a DE-NT-DE alignment. . .

Exactly. We get this kind of fluff every summer and Id rather they just play and not say things like this.

Maybe he is just excited because he will have significantly more opportunities to rush the QB as he will spend more time on the field with CS running the offense. He could have a 15 to 18 sack year with that kind of playing time.

heh.

Well, at least we will be DIFFERENT. Anything DIFFERENT than last years squad is an upgrade. I'll leave my aspirations for the defense at that for now, at least until I see some gametape........

The Goodman's getting canned is the big shake-up. Considering we've had some pretty solid drafts with them and they were tossed aside too easily, that just doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence. I believed McDaniels and Nolan, not Xanders, would be the ones evaluating talent, and that was okay, until McDaniels showed he might have biases that won't allow him to be truly objective in evaluating talent.

Obviously you're expecting at least one special teams TD per game. :D

he still has to help with the run, so he better be getting stronger...or he'll become a pass rushing specialist on passing downs only...on his way out of denver.

i'm not so sure about that. . . playing the run from the 34 OLB spot is a whole different ballgame from playing the run as a 43 DE with your hand on the ground. . .

elvis is vastly undersized trying to hold the point against massive OTs in close quarters, but as an OLB he'll be playing in space more, and his responsibility will most likely be the D gap/outside contain as opposed to the C gaps from the seven or nine technique. . . and while 5'11" 260 is still a bit small for a 34 OLB, it's not tiny by any means-- DMVP james harrison is 6'0" 242. . . we'll see how well doom changes direction when he has more field to cover, but we know that he has a serious motor and pursues very aggressively. . . and the guy put up 30 reps on the bench at the combine, which is very impressive with those plasticman arms-- strength shouldn't be an issue, especialy after two years of NFL weight training and banging in the trenches. . . i'm sure he'll have to put in extra work on breaking down in the open field as opposed to tackling mostly in a phone booth, but he's an experienced defender, a tough kid and a hard worker. . . i think he should be fine. . . JMO. . . it's his coverage that i'm more concerned about, but if nolan has our best pass rusher dropping into coverage any more than is absolutely necessary then there's something wrong. . .

Time dummerville needs. Allow him to adjust to the new position you must. Complete his training he will. A deadly force he will become. Time. Time, he needs.
