Iron Man 2' adds Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson: Even more excited now?

The amount of talent Marvel has assembled for Iron Man 2 is pretty impressive. You have actor/writer Justin Theroux penning the script, multihyphenate Jon Favreau behind the camera, and A-list talent like Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Samuel L. Jackson reprising their roles from the stupendously awesome original (with Don Cheadle stepping in for Terrence Howard, to boot). Then, then, you add Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke as villains and you have the formula for one hell of a sequel. And let's be serious: Rourke was born to play a villain in a superhero flick. Just look at that face! It was meant to be.

To me, there seems to be only one weak link: the just-confirmed Scarlett Johansson. Sure, she's a fine actress given the right role and is guaranteed to look sultry in a skintight leathery costume. But her character, Black Widow, is a Russian spy. That's right, Russian. The thought of Johansson attempting a Russian accent sends chills down my spine, PopWatchers, and not in a good way. It certainly doesn't do Johnasson any favors that we've been imagining Emily Blunt in the role for quite some time (who had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts). Blunt surely would've killed and could have used the profile boost. But, I'll look at this from a glass-half-full perspective: While Johansson has floundered in big-budget blockbusters (The Spirit or The Island, anyone?) in the past, this plum role is her chance to shine.

Regardless, are you as jazzed for Iron Man 2 as I am? Is Johnasson a good choice to play Black Widow? And can you believe we have to wait until May 7 of 2010 to see it?

Iron Man was good, but still looking more forward to Thor and Captain America. That way they can finally do the Avengers movie!

I disagreed. Did you see, "The Wrestler”? Mickey Rourke is awesome in this movie and He did an amazing job in this movie. I would be happy to see him in Iron Man II.

When I heard Downey Jr was the lead in the first one, I was skeptical. Not because he can't act, I just didn't think it was his thing. I thought he pulled it off quite well. I'm definitely looking forward to the second one.

As far as Scarlett goes. I'm a fan. She's beautiful, and I won't mind it if her accent doesn't quite fit.

I would like to mention about Mickey Rourke. He was awesome in Sin City and I liked his character in Sin City. I think it would be a great fit for Mickey Rourke in next Iron Man movie.

Iron Man was AWSOME.. and probably one of the VERY best comic movies made that depicts the character... not to mention the 'king' of marvel comics at that.

I personally think Johanson is a great choice. Great actress.

What I don't like, is Samuel Jackson. Where did someone look at Jackson and say "yeah, he's exactly what I imagine when reading the character Nick Fury." Really???

I like that addition of Don Cheadle as well.. great actor. MUCH better than the guy they had in 1, Terrence Howard?

Nah, he plays Whiplash. Actually one of Iron Man's better enemies. War Machine (the gray Iron Man in the trailer) should be an enemy at the beginning of the movie if they follow the comic book story arch at all. Thats the only thing bad about the Iron Man comics is that his villains sucked. He was only good when he crossed over with the Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D.

I'm bettting they skip War Machine being an enemy, simply because in Iron Man, he fought a 'similar' type (but larger) baddie.

Whiplash is pretty cool, but we are going to see several baddies in this one, or the idea of accumulating several baddies to take on Iron Man. This is why:

( I was an Iron Man fan, but I was too young to realize just how much plot is involved in the soap-opera, but its fascinating reading now)

This is all taken from the links of characters on the Iron Man 2 website. So I'm getting backround as to how they are going to shrink YEARS of comic drama into a two hour movie. Here is some backround to the characters.
--------------------------------------------

Sam Rockwell plays Justin Hammer. A rival of industrialist Anthony Stark (Iron Man), multi-billionaire businessman Hammer, himself an industrialist, later became a criminal financier. Hammer uses unethical methods. In exchange for fifty percent of the profits from their crimes, he will pay bail for costumed criminals and finance the development and replacement of their weaponry and equipment.

It was revealed, years later, that Justin Hammer had obtained Stane International (Stane was the baddie in the first movie) after the death of its chairman Obadiah Stane, causing problems for Tony Stark through his old company. With operatives of HYDRA, Roxxon Oil, Moroboshi International, and the Trinational Commission, Hammer tricked the Masters of Silence into attacking Stark Enterprises...
-----------------------------------------
Whiplash:
Mark Scarlotti is originally a gifted electrical technician at Stark International's Cincinnati branch, but desires a life of luxury and becomes a professional criminal. With a costume and a sophisticated metal whip of his own design, Scarlotti becomes Whiplash, a weapons designer, special agent, and assassin for the criminal organization the Maggia. On behalf of the Maggia, Whiplash then fights to a standstill the hero Iron Man - secretly inventor Tony Stark and Scarlotti's former employer...

...Several years later criminal mastermind Justin Hammer hires Whiplash to join an army of supervillains. Whiplash, Melter, and the original Blizzard attempt the robbery of an Atlantic City casino and battle Iron Man. Whiplash is released from prison by Hammer and battles Iron Man again as one of Hammer's costumed operatives. Iron Man beats Whiplash a second time in a matter of days...

...Several months later Scarlotti is re-employed by an unnamed consortium, financed by Hammer, to kill Stark employee Vic Martinelli, and is provided with an upgraded costume and weaponry and the new alias Blacklash.
----------------------------------------------
Black Widow:

Natalia Romanova was born in Stalingrad, Russia and was trained as a Soviet agent. Over her lifetime she has had numerous associations with various Marvel super heroes.

At one time she attempted to seduce American defense contractor Tony Stark and inevitably confronted his superhero alter ego, Iron Man. Later, Romanova eventually joins the super-team the Avengers as a costumed superhero.

Eventually, she began freelancing as an agent of the international espionage group S.H.I.E.L.D, lead by Nick Fury.
-----------------------------------
Iron Maiden:
Not only do we see Black Widow in this movie, but also Iron Maiden... who was Black Widow's nemesis, another russian assassin. The Iron Maiden is a master combatant, assassin, and agent of espionage. She wears a flexible metal costume which protects her from the force of many impacts and insulates her against many forms of energy attack. It may grant her some level of superhuman strength, making her somewhere between peak and enhanced human.
---------------------------------------------

War Machine/Jim Rhodes:

Tony Stark, who had secretly become the superhero named Iron Man, offered Rhodes a job as his personal pilot, and Rhodes soon became one of Stark's closest associates and confidants as well as Stark Industries' chief aviation officer. As a result, he had numerous adventures with his employer where his daring and skills were valuable assets.

The two men worked together on many occasions, Rhodes even risking his life and his career to aid Stark during the Armor Wars, when Iron Man discovered that his technology had been stolen and sold to various armoured villains.

Stark also subsequently designed a heavier-armed version of the Iron Man suit, the "Variable Threat Response Battle Suit" to battle the Masters of Silence, and it became known as the War Machine armor.
--------------------------------------------------

Masters of Silence:

They were tricked by Justin Hammer into attacking Iron Man, but then joined Iron Man in demolishing Hammer's facilities.
-------------------------------------------------

Maggia:

The organization exists in Marvel's main shared universe, known as the Marvel Universe. Its structure is somewhat similar to the Mafia (which is itself almost never referred to in Marvel stories), but the Maggia differs in that it frequently hires supervillains and mad scientists to work for them. The characters Count Nefaria and his daughter Madame Masque have both been leaders of an important Maggia family.

Nefaria Family:

The late Italian nobleman, Count Luchino Nefaria, a scientific genius, was the world's most powerful Maggia leader until his initial defeat by the Avengers...

...After his defeat and capture, his daughter Giulietta, also known as Whitney Frost (Madam Mosque), succeeded him as family head and led an unsuccessful attempt to capture the advanced weaponry of Tony Stark. ...

... has employed futuristic weaponry and even robots (like the Dreadnoughts), as well as costumed super-powered agents (Unicorn, Whiplash, Gladiator, etc.), and has launched open attacks on society (looks like the trailer?) <------------...
------------------------------

Bethany Cabe (played by Kate Mara):

Bethany Ann Cabe mete Tony Stark (Iron Man) while they were attending a party for the Carnelian Embassy. Stark was trying to draw out an assassin known as Spymaster who attempted to kill him.

Bethany shortly afterwards became Stark's girlfriend, turning up on various missions including a covert operation involving Roxxon Oil. It was after this incident that Bethany revealed to Stark that she was actually a bodyguard working for Cabe & McPherson Security Specialists with her best friend, Ling McPherson. Bethany accompanied Stark to Atlantic City where, as Iron Man, Stark came into conflict with the Melter, Blizzard, and Whiplash. During the battle, Iron Man was nearly overcome by the combined extreme temperatures from the Melter and Blizzard. However, Bethany stepped in to save him, providing Iron Man with a temporary distraction. With her expert skills in hand-to-hand combat, Bethany made short work of Whiplash. The rift came to a head when Iron Man's repulsor, under the control of Justin Hammer, blasted through the Carnelian ambassador, killing him instantly. With Iron Man wanted for murder, Bethany and Stark's relationship began to cool...

...However, Stark chose not to reveal that he was Iron Man at this time. Shortly afterwards, Iron Man came into conflict with Madame Masque once again (from the Maggia). This time, Masque, together with the Spymaster, kidnapped Bethany. Masque wanted revenge on Stark and displayed her jealousy at Bethany's intimate relationship with him.

Whiplash is a woman. Wow. Maybe her husband Blacklash? Anyway he was never a challenging villian for Ironman in the comics. Not that I recall at least. And I dont remember him being Russian. Looks like they are merging villians.

Whiplash is a guy, and he's not russian in this movie. His name in the movie is Mark Scarlotti, just like the comic books (that sounds italian). Natalia Romanova is russian, and she's the black widow. So is Iron Maiden, Widow's nemesis.

After Whiplash goes to jail and released by Justin Hammer (another character in the movie) and given more advanced technology, he changes his name to Backlash (its all laid out in my monster post prior) :D
