In an introductory conference call today, newly-acquired New York Jets safety Jim Leonhard (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/03/leonhard-looks-to-be-kerrys-ca.html)acknowledged that the Denver Broncoshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/#) made a tempting, late bid to sign him, according to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News.
Ultimately, Leonhard turned down the Broncos’ richer offer and stuck with the Jets as he signed a three-year contract believed to be worth roughly $6 million.
“We were very close to having everything signed, sealed and delivered to New York and, all of a sudden, the Denver Broncos came out of nowhere and threw a big number at me,” said Leonhard, who played for the Baltimore Ravenshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/#) last season. ”I took a few hours to consider it and we ultimately decided that, regardless of the money situation, the Jets were the place to be.”
Leonhard admitted that he could have made more money in Denver, but opted to go with the Jets where he’ll play for his former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, the Jets’ head coach.
“Yes, I did and I’m okay with that situation,” Leonhard said. “I made the right decision.”
