Broncos | Paxton signs five-year deal
Fri, 27 Feb 2009 12:07:50 -0800

Updating a previous report, the Denver Broncos have signed C Lonie Paxton (Patriots) to a five-year deal that will make him the second highest paid long snapper in NFL history. His signing bonus was also the second highest ever for a pure long snapper.

this just keeps getting better-- i'm glad xanders and mcdaniels have their priorities straight. . . .

I take back my comment about him not making much more than the league minimum...we still have a lot of cap space though. We're not gonna build a defense in one day though. I feel like some people were expecting us to miraculously woo any FA we wanted and not have to overpay to get them.

The bitching is because this move is completely unnecessary. This team needs help or quality backup in pretty much every position.....except long snapper and punter. We just spent the most money on a long snapper EVER. A five year flippin' contract? It's BOGUS. A waste of time and money. Sure, it's not going to stop them from getting the help we need, but it sure makes me question whether or not McKid and Xanders know WTF they are doing.

2. Patriot Games
by Steve Wulf
ESPN The Magazine

# Launch The ESPN 100

Perfect name. Perfect timing. Perfect storyline. And on a snowy day in Foxboro, the perfect gesture.

After Adam Vinatieri kicked the 23-yard field goal in overtime that gave the Patriots a 16-13 victory over Oakland's Raiders and put them in the AFC championship game, New England long-snapper Lonie Paxton lay down in the powder and made a snow angel. While all of New England danced in delirium, Paxton just lay there on the 5-yard line, fanning his arms and legs up and down.

The impression he left was that there was someone watching over the Patriots, some higher power seeing to it that in America's time of crisis, the team that most directly symbolized the spirit of this nation would win the day. "Team of destiny was not what I was going for there," says Paxton, a Southern Californian and Greek-American with scant winter background. "A lot of people read that into the snow angel, but basically, I was just trying to show how happy I was."

I'm not a fan either, but you can't deny its marketability, billion dollar profit, and... well, let's not get into that.

And that doesn't even make sense:
1) Cool, he can "recognize" surprise. What's he gonna do about it?
2) No matter how much "recognition" you have, you can still hit Leach in the head with a lead brick without surprising him and he'll go unconscious, I'm pretty sure.

Lonie Paxton, however, both destroyed the Titanic, saved enough people to tell the story of the "iceberg", killed Celine Dion, then briefly brought her back to life to win best soundtrack award.

That's funny that you mention Chuck Norris. You see, Lonie Paxton impregnated the woman who gave birth to Chuck Norris. Then, impatient with the 9 month process they call "pregnancy", Mr. Paxton reached in and took Chuck, just the slightest embryo, out, and fostered him to full size with only his bare hands and colored tattoos.

Looks like this signing has created some issues with some of the Broncos players:

"You want to put it behind you as quick as possible and get ready and get to work, especially with a new coach," returning Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley said. "Definitely that would be best. Then again, with everything that's gone on, everybody's learned you have to look out for yourself. I present Mike Leach."
The Broncos released Leach, their longtime long snapper and locker-room leader, and signed former New England long snapper Lonie Paxton to a five-year deal. "I'm still mad about that," Stokley said. "I think all this with Jay will eventually work itself out. Once it's time to play football, Jay's going to be ready to play football, and we're all going to be committed to winning. I'm not worried about that with Jay. But Mike Leach, I don't think the Broncos treated him fairly."

I can understand guys being disappointed in this, but when the overall goal of the team isnt being achieved...changes need to be made. Sometimes nice guys just arent kept around when the changes occur. I'll agree that the LS spot is a very trivial move to make, but at the end of the day, we just need alot of things overhauled in Denver.

glad to see stoke sticking up for him. i wish more players would speak out about this. i don't like when players speak out against their coach, but it's totally justified when they are speaking out in support of a fellow player who was clearly wronged by the new HC.

Still, why Leach and why pay a long snapper $1 million a year? Leach was doing a solid job for less $$ now we have a long snapper who makes more than our starting center! Leach was a locker room leader and was well respected and liked by his team mates. I don't see how we ganied anything by going with somebody else?

Exactly. I wish somebody could explain to me how that brought the Broncos
any closer to being a winning team. I know what it did do: It tore up the roots
of a player and his family, who was doing a good job at his position and was,
as you said, a leader. It also ruffled some feathers, as Stokley conveyed (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_11830188).

But how did it add any W's?

My personal response to this is that I could care less about the LS position. As long as someone is there doing the job well...I guess I'm fine with it. If we brought in someone new and paid him 300,000 more to do it...oh well. That's kind of chump change when it comes to FA.

It's just not a big enough issue for me to realy care...unless of course I was doubting my coach (who hasnt had a chance to coach yet). Then maybe I'd make an issue out of it

Leach was also 33, and in the last year of his deal. Who's to say he decides against signing with Denver next year. Josh McDaniels used this opportunity to acquire an outstanding younger player that can set a great tone in the locker room with most likely a cap friendly deal that's backloaded.

At first I hated this move, but the more I think about it.....brilliant.

CARDINALS SIGN MIKE LEACH
Posted by Josh Alper on March 11, 2009, 5:19 p.m.
Former Broncos long snapper Mike Leach signed with the Cardinals on Wednesday, completing a three-team game of musical chairs.

Leach, who spent seven years in Denver, was made expendable on the first day of free agency when the Broncos signed former Patriots long snapper Lonie Paxton. Paxton was replaced by Cardinals long snapper Nathan Hodel on Tuesday and, now, the music has stopped with all three players finding new homes.

It’s a three-year deal, according to the Denver Post. The Cardinals also met with free agent Jason Kyle about the job, but Kyle recently expressed a desire to return to the Panthers.

Lonie Paxton secretly wishes he was Brett Favre.

It was Lonie Paxton who, in the past two years, has stolen Brett Favre's short-term memory during the offseason.

Who is this Mike you speak of?

Some dude that threw balls between his legs and ran down the field like a chicken with his head cut off. What people don't know is that Lonnie Paxton ripped his eyeballs out and ate them raw.

Did you guys see him get pancaked like a champ on Sproles' return TD last night? He looks good even when he is getting knocked on his ass.

Leach would have prevented that TD.....

Nah, Leach probably would have snapped it over Kern's head, never giving Sproles a chance to score! :D

Statistical proof that Mike Leach is better than Lonie Paxton:

Mike:

Lonie:

I rest my case.

I really wish the Broncos would start consulting with Profootballfocus from now on before making any roster moves.

Let's discuss what Lonie Paxton is doing at this exact moment.

I imagine him getting his Ed Hardy gear on for a night of clubbing.

At least now we know the worst that they can do... it's all uphill from here.

Little did we know, NTL. It was only the beginning.

Answer: Nope, not at all.

6? I'd put $5 on this thread at least reaching 15 pages eventually.

Glad no one took that bet. :D

When the day comes that Leach is released, I will shed a tear or two and then hold tryouts for my next adopted Bronco. I expect competition to be fierce. Not everyone serves their adoptee as devotedly as I do.

I just can't let go.

Mike Leach can actually snap a ball that holds itself. The holder was just on the team to help stimulate the economy.

This is still my favorite post of the thread.

Man, who would have known that replacing one real good long snapper with another real good long snapper would have brought such angst from the fanbase, much less that we'd still be talking about it two years later. ****, reading these forums you'd think we'd downgraded our talent level or something important.

Facepalm.
