GAFFNEY REUNITING WITH MCDANIELS?
Posted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2009, 5:51 a.m.
Receiver Jabar Gaffney got a chance to resurrect his career over the past couple of years in New England.

Mired in a depth chart featuring men like Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte’ Stallworth, and Kelley Washington, Gaffney earned reps and made plays.

He’s now a free agent, and he could be reuniting with the offensive coordinator who presided over Gaffney’s rebirth.

Per a league source, Gaffney will visit with the Broncos, whose new head coach Josh McDaniels was the offensive coordinator during Gaffney’s time in New England.

Drafted in 2002 by the Texans, Gaffney spent four years with the team before signing with the Eagles. But Philly cut him before the 2006 season, and Gaffney landed with the Pats for three seasons.

Of course, Gaffney makes sense, coming from NE.

But they need to concentrate on CB.

This is what happens with offensive-minded head coaches, they are blind to their obsessions.

WE NEED DEFENSE !!

I don't want Arrington or Buckhalter if it means we can't get Bartell.

Are you saying a defensive minded coach can't become obsessed? If so I disagree.

Also this is McDaniels first eyear as a head coach and you're already criticising him being obsessive? That's way to quick on the draw in my opinion.

Why well prepare yourself now, because it's really been floated for couple of days now that Bartell isn't even one of their targets. Besides that even if they sign Bartell doesn't do a damn thing for the front seven which far and way more difficult to fix.

Superchop 7
02-27-2009, 10:57 AM
The reason CB is a dire need through FA is because the draft class is weak. Bartell is a nice CB against taller receivers.

Not worried about the front 7, we can get good linebackers in the draft, the front 3 is a problem we can help through FA. (Jackson, Canty)

Bottom line.

If we spend FA dollars on offense, that means less $$ for defense.

In 2008, we saw how ineffective the lower tier FA's were.

Defense is very important this year but so is more balance to our offense. I would be shocked if McD totally ignores the defense this year but i seriously doubt he will so im still ok right now and havent gone into meltdown mode. Ill wait and see how the FA market and draft turnout before i critique him.

I pray we dont sign him...Clayton on the other hand I would be thrilled! Yeah his production is less or equal to gaffney, but i think that was more where he played and who he had throwing to him..(7 different qbs)

You're thinking about Reche Caldwell and not Gaffney. He's the one with the big eyes that was dropping those passes against Indy in the AFC Championship a few years ago.

I've said all along if we're going to sign an aging vet I hope its Dawkins... We need 2 new starting safeties, and we can't get both of those in the draft. Dawkins could be like our version of Rodney Harrison, the chargers let him go thinking he was in the downswing of his career and he squeaked out another 3-4 productive years.

Plus Dawkins is tough as nails, plays injured, and is a great veteran leader...

Good for Paxton. I wish him the best in Denver.

Posted by Nate February 27, 09 02:15 PM I thought there was meant to be some grace between Coaches when they leave and the Free Agents that are at the team they are from? It was talked about on PFW in Progress the other day and it mainly came from those coaches that came from Parcells and now Belichick.

Why is McDaniels after our free agents so early on?

Brian Dawkins Signs in Denver
Friday, February 27, 2009

After 13 years with the Eagles, safety Brian Dawkins will have a new home.

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Dawkins has agreed to terms with the Broncos.

Dawkins, 35, had said during the season that he thought he'd work out a deal to end his career in Philly. It could still happen, but only after a stint with the Broncos.

Broncos In The Picture For Ray Lewis?
Report Says It's Possible

Could it be possible that Ravens All-Pro linebacker Ray Lewis could somehow end up in a Denver Broncos uniform? Sounds far-fetched, but the idea is picking up some traction in rumor mills on the Internet.

Now most of the reports on Lewis up to this point have said he's looking at three options, none including the Broncos.

1) Re-sign with the Ravens
2) Sign with the Cowboys
3) Sign with the Jets.

However, Jamison Hensley on the Baltimore Sun's Web site puts the Broncos in the mix as another option.

Here's what Hensley wrote:

"This is the team that has stayed under the radar with Lewis. But there are strong signs Denver could make a run at him.

New Broncos defensive coordinator Nolan had a great relationship with Lewis when he was the Ravens' defensive coordinator. They would meet every week to discuss game-planning.

Besides, Denver is not expected to re-sign middle linebacker Nate Webster. It has been estimated the Broncos have more than $30 million in salary-cap room.

This could be a more viable destination than the Cowboys or the Jets."

Again it sure seems far-fetched, but we can dream can't we?

ESPN Rumor Mill...sorry if it hasn't been posted:

Broncos emerge as candidate for Lewis
Ray Lewis | Ravens | Interested: Broncos? Cowboys? Jets?
While the Baltimore Ravens have feverishly tried to retain linebacker Ray Lewis over the last few weeks, his name has been linked in various sources to both the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys. Amid the smoldering chaos as the league has finally entered the opening day of free agency, a darkhorse candidate out west has emerged according to the Baltimore Sun: the Denver Broncos.

Lewis and nascent Broncos defensive coordinator Mike Nolan worked together when Nolan had the same position with the Ravens, and according to the Sun, the two would meet one-on-one on a weekly basis to work on game-plans. In addition, the Broncos have been cutting dead weight since the promotion of general manager Brian Xanders, and the team is expected to be around $30 million under the salary cap. Lewis would be a solid tackling machine in the middle of the field as well as a vocal leader as the team installs Nolan's schemes.

He will be better than what we currently have and perhaps be able to teach our kids some .. But expecting him to be RL of old would be foolhardy..

Nope he wouldnt be. But he is a million times better than webster, and he also brings Intensity and leadership to the defense. he also doesnt tolerate laziness or mistakes and will hold people accountable for shyt.

I would be very giddy about our defense if we could have the middle of the field led by the rays---lewis and malualaga

Well if we actually do sign him I wont complain.

i dunno, man. . . ted thompson is a freakin' cheapskate, i'm not so sure that they'll make him an offer so big that he doesn't want to see what else is out there. . . why should he be in any hurry? ray lewis and his big rep aside, canty is the top defender in free agency now that haynesworth has been signed. . .

for god's sake, how stupid is that? pay him 2.5 million per year to fill a role that you can fill with a rookie UDFA for 500,000 pretty much any year. . . if he was an electric playmaker i could see it, but he's a 25 yards per kick return kind of guy, and a crap RB. . . don't like it. . .

I would have rather taken a CB or WR or even another RB in the draft that can return kickoffs. how many RBs can we dress in a given week, and we can only fit so many ST specific players on the roster.

he's a solid kick return guy, and that's good. but I don't think he's returned punts has he? I still want Royal returning punts.

he's had about as many receptions the past two seasons as he has had carries, so I doubt we're bringing him in to tote the rock. I don't know, seems redundant to me.

I don't get it either  We brought in 3 2nd tier guys when we could have taken 2 of those contracts and signed ward.. I guess McDaniels don't want 1 every down back? It seems he would rather have 3 so so backs caring the ball instead of one top of the line guy...

I guess this way we will be in better shape if one or two of them go down..

Mc Kid does not want an every down RB none of his/NE's Rb have gotten more than 750-900 yards or so in the past 3-4 years excepting the first year maroney was there IIRC it was 1050 or so..

We have a new scheme in place and that means RBBC lots of them getting 2200-2500 yards a year..

Who cares, if we are winning.. I'd rather have 4-5 getting 500 each..

That way we are not paying premium money for a RB..

Well, when you add the contracts of the 3 main guys we aren't saving money..

I'm not saying we should put all our eggs in one basket but as far as production, having one AP carry the rock seems like a better idea then paying 3 guys who all have less skills the same amount to split the same amount of carries.

Jordan came pretty cheap, he was a good signing IMO. The other 2 on the other hand, weren't so cheap. They are getting paid better then backups. I would have rather had 1 ward instead of those 2.

Its the "Patriot way", no one big RB. They tried with drafting Maroney, but in the end its Faulk/Morris/Jordan (as of last year), Taylor added to that group this year for the Pats, ie Corey Dillion a few years back.

ya Pats definately missed with Maroney... seeing how they passed on Deangelo Williams for Him I think hes a bust.

Maroney has produced but when you are a running back taken in the 1st round and havent had a break out season within the 3 years I consider you a bust.

Until last year they were calling Williams a bust..

Didn't Maroney run for over a 1,000? I wouldn't call him a bust, he is a bit injury prone but otherwise he has been pretty decent. I think it would be hard for any back to have great success in the Pats system. They don't commit to the run. It's not like he gets 20+ carries a game.

Running backs are becoming a draft, let them produce for 7-8 years then dump kind of commodity. So you shouldn't put so much value on a free agent running back. If they are old enough to hit free agency, they probably won't be good for very long, and if they are in free agency any way they probably aren't good enough anyway.

Young to compete for starting spot

The Denver Broncos brought in more competition for coach Josh McDaniel's first training camp by signing Browns backup guard Scott Young Friday.

Terms of the deal weren't immediately available. Young becomes the 14th offseason signing for the Broncos, but he is the first addition to the offensive line.

Young, 27, was a fifth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005. He spent three seasons with the Eagles and the past two with the Browns. He's played in 14 games in four seasons, but has never started.
