If he's gonna stay with us and we go to a 3-4, he'll almost certainly have to. Unless we go way undersized at NT like the 'Boys.

It's hard to say since I don't think most of us have really seen him play. I remember reading where he said that he thought he could play DT and DE in the NFL...in some article that was written around the time of the draft.

I just did a quick search for that thread (http://www.broncosforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32208&highlight=Carlton+Powell) and here is one question from the interview from the article:

SF - At VT you played Left Defensive Tackle in their 4-3 alignment. Does it make a difference to you whether you play in a 4-3 or a 3-4?

CP - I can play any position on the line. I can adjust to whatever. I am a smart player and I can roll with whatever comes my way.

It probably doesn't really mean much since he was trying to raise his draft stock any way possible at the time I'm sure, but he thinks he can play DE in a 3-4.

I think he can play the nose if he were to pump some more iron.

I agree that we just don't know enough about him to say yay or nay on this one.

That's the best type of question though because it means we can make stuff up. I heard from my mother's brother's sister's son that he's working out at a special NT trainer this off-season apparently the team's even paying for it under the table so it doesn't count. It's the same place that Jamal Williams and Casey Hampton go. I believe it's a converted Krispy Kreme.

That would be where I would try to fit him in.

And it may just work, for me, since Alridge is gone....Powell is my most intriguing prospect.

since he is on the shorter side 6'3" instead of 6'4" plus and stockier than most DE I'm suspecting he can put some muscle on and come in at 315 plus.

Since his specialty in college was run stuffing he would be more of a NT type, in the NFL.. HE was not a great Sacker AT VT but made a lot of tackles BEHIND the LOS.. IIRC he was only resposible for less than 50 yards positive yards gained on him..

Some one that is not moved off his space=NT

As a 3-4 defensive end he wouldn't be asked to rush the passer. His primary responsibilities would be to keep the offensive tackle occupied and to guard his gaps on either side.

Powell's scouting report gave him props for his quick feet, and he has decent
speed for his size. So he might fit well at DE in a 3-4.
