What do you think are the best male/female vocalists of each genre?

For best male rock vocalist ever I'm going with either Getty Lee of Rush or Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin.

Pop/rock male: Clay Aiken. Historical: Neil Diamond
Pop/rock female: Kelly Clarkson. Historical: Shirley Bassey
Country male: Alan Jackson. Historical: Johnny Cash
Country female: Carrie Underwood. Historical: Ann Murray

They're in awfully fast company, and none are etched in stone (except Shirley Bassey)

Motown, I say Etta James for female.
Gothic Rock, Amy Lee
Country, Faith Hill and Vince Gill
Pop, Josh Groban

The others I need to think about.

Freddie. End of.

Man could sing anything from opera to rock with all stops in between

Maynard James Keenan from Tool/A Perfect Circle is probably at the top of my list.

I also really like Layne Staley, Phil Anselmo, Corey Taylor (Slipknot and Stone Sour) and Chad Gray (Mudvayne, Hell Yeah).

Then there are classics like Rob Halford, Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant.

I'm not sure what genre to put Freddie in. Theatrical? I agree though, no one can compare to him. He had the voice and the showmanship and knew how to entertain.

I think we should argue this without saying Freddie Mercury. He's clearly #1, no other male singer is even in his league.

Beyond him... I think the guy from Opeth, Mikael Akerfeldt is an incredibly talented singer.

Arethra Franklin, hands down (before she got old and so fat she can't breathe).

Freddie Mercury and Maynard James Keenan are both incredible.

Maynard!

Staley, Cornell, Weiland, Corey Taylor and Anthony Kiedes. For Country I like Don Williams (Garth Brooks can suck it). I'm a huge fan of Neil Diamond and Billy Joel. I think the dude from The Killers is pretty good.

For Chicks there is Fiona Apple, but I like the chick from Flyleaf and the chick from Garbage. Carrie Underwood needs a spankin.......

Tsk, no mention of Janis Joplin.

Here's my list, not much of an order other than the first few:

Freddie Mercury (could sing anything)
Layne Staley
Brad Delp
Janis Joplin
David Gilmour
Robert Plant
Ronnie James Dio
Geddy Lee
Pelle Almqvist (of the Hives)
Norah Jones
Eddie Vedder
Klaus Meine
M. J. Keenan

Well, if you're going that far back, there are also Grace Slick, Roy Orbison,
Lena Zavaroni, Don Henley, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdink, Elvis (of
course) . . . the list goes on and on.

But you do have a good list here. As I said, it's pretty fast company . . .

As a "vocalist" Elvis sucked...as a performer/entertainer...he was the "king"

Grace Slick I can put in the same category, vocally she was pretty weak, but entertaining, at least. Don Henley I can see, as long as he was the vocalist on Hotel California, because that's one damn hard song to sing. Orbison? Vocally...no.

Like it or get out of my face." He made Steppenwolf one of my favorite groups.

The fish only die in spurts. I've had very good luck with goldfish. No one died in months and months. Justin died because the largest fish decided to torture him to death. I got another tank because I felt bad for Justin, and decided that Justin needed friends. Justin died anyway, then tinker died from the shock of Justin's death. I moved dogfish to the goldfish tank and since he was just a baby, he died of shock too.

I thought I'd give Ned a friend and thus named it Oobi. Two days later, Patsy, who was happily hanging out with Slick, wound up dead.

I won't have fish death for a long while.

Something we can agree on.

He didn't want to sing for a long time, that's why he kept joining bands as the lead guitarist, Yardbirds, Cream, John Mayal's Bluesbreakers, and Blind Faith, and then hid behind Derek and the Dominoes. He hated singing in public. Eric Clapton = God.
