The Broncos on Thursday made their first change to the defense by cutting defensive tackle Josh Shaw.

The team also signed Matt McChesney, a former player at the University of Colorado and Niwot High. Denver signed McChesney as an offensive guard although he played defensive tackle in college.

Shaw ended the season on injured reserve after injuring his elbow Nov. 28 against the Jets. He played in five games and made three tackles. He missed three games early in the season because of a groin injury, and was suspended for a game on Oct. 20 after getting into a fight with a teammate in a meeting during the week.

McChesney, entering his third year in the NFL, was cut by Miami on Monday. He played in one game for the Dolphins but hurt his knee and ended the season on IR.

The Broncos continued to tweak their roster Thursday, releasing defensive tackle Josh Shaw and signing former Colorado offensive lineman Matt McChesney.

Shaw, who played as a reserve in the team’s defensive line rotation, suffered two injuries this past season (laceration to his calf and a groin injury) and finished with only five tackles.

The Broncos claimed him off waivers early in the season after he had been released by the Oakland Raiders. Shaw also was briefly suspended by the team for an altercation with teammate Kenny Peterson.

Several Broncos players have said since that Shaw had punched Peterson.

The Broncos, who released five players Wednesday, still have 58 players under contract for 2009.

One of the players the Broncos released Wednesday – running back Anthony Alridge – was claimed off waivers Thursday by both Minnesota and Washington and was awarded to the Redskins because they finished with a worse record this past season.

I'm pretty sure that the number 80 included exemptions for NFL Europe which no longer apply. The cut down dates are the 1st and 5th of september, you can check the offseason schedule thread that I made. Or even sticky it if you want.

I was wrong it is 80 now, it used to be higher with the exemptions.
