People like Bill Maher are such jackasses. I understand that to some people the idea of an almighty benevelant being is laughable to them. I even can see how it could look that way. But, a speck of dust coliding with another speck of dust causing an explosion which creates an atmosphere which inturn creates a planet that can sustain life and after trillions of years the one celled organisms on said planet eventually evolve into monkeys who then later evolve into human beings, is just as bat shit crazy as any thing any religious person could ever think of.

Still plenty of walking around cash for joes like us, but still just a fraction of his previous income. In fact his previous 5 year contract was worth $40 million.

Eh. It's all relative. Plus it gave him time to do the following:

Imus was instrumental in raising over $60 million for the Center for the Intrepid, a Texas rehabilitation facility for soldiers wounded in the Iraq War. The largest technological center of its kind in the country, it is designed to help treat disabled veterans and help them with their transition back into the community. Imus has also taken on the cause of the living conditions at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, visiting wounded veterans at the hospital to boost morale.

I choose not to even pay him, or anyone else much attention that consistently say things I don't agree with. He is free to express himself, and while HBO does give him that platform, it really doesn't bother me much. He'll meet his maker in due time. Cancelling HBO for me is counterproductive. I would be removing some of my own personal enjoyment because of one person who I ignore anyway.

Did you really just compare something a comedian said - a comedian who's known for saying anti religious things - on a social network where you have to "follow" him to see what he's saying to a house burning down?

No, it's not a stretch. It's ludicrous.

And Tebow is a big boy. He can stick up for himself. I'm guessing he doesn't care, because he's secure in his belief.

Besides the only reason Maher says shit like that is to get people to react to it, thus giving him free advertising when they throw a public hissy fit. I'm guessing you don't watch his show anyway, so you're not part of the core demographic who watches his show who either agree with him or can take his schtick with a grain of salt and not overreact, meaning his ratings don't go down, and HBO continues to air his show. So unsubscribing from HBO because of the host of a show you already don't watch is just counterproductive.

And then, by doing so, you give him a ton of free advertising. I guarantee there's at least one person that has read this thread who will google him and then watch his show the next time it comes on to see what other crazy stuff he says, or if he mentions Tebow again.

Aside from some Gator and Broncos fans, I would presume most people that would be offended are Christians. Most Christians I know see HBO as 24-hour smut and wouldn't pay to have it in their homes. So Bill Maher has nothing to worry about and neither does HBO. They've already alienated the Tebow fan base 1000 times over. One more awful attempt at humor isn't going to make it worse.

Since HBO is pay television and has no advertisers, cancelling your subscription is the proper response if you're outraged. But, if you're outraged, I'm guessing you should've already cancelled HBO long before now.

Yep, see Mr. Bill needs attention and free publicity because his show starts again this season in January. Bill thought it would be a great idea to jump on the Tim bandwagon for attention and he got it. I did not care for his remarks but I also feel that everyone has a right to their opinion. Jumping on Tebow for the attention has made Bill look like the desperate looser that he is but he is getting the attention he wanted.

I'm a Big Bill Maher fan. I watch his show. He is a Comedian with political views which does allow him to get more dirty with jokes than most talk show host.

Real Time (to me) is filled with intelligent conversations and mostly every week there is at least some form of representation by a person from the right. So it's balanced when the round table is discussing topics.

I'm also a Big Broncos fan therefore i'm a Tebow fan. I don't get offended by his overly religious ways. I see he is the person he claims to be and I can only hope he get's better in the passing game so he can be our FQB.

Bill Maher's tweet was actually pretty tamed compared to most things he says. So if you are ending your subscription to HBO because of them you should have done it a long long time ago.

I totally get what WI is saying; Maher is a total *******, and I personally wish him nothing but ill fortune. Seriously, that is how much I loathe him, on every level. He also has yet to say a clever, funny, or daring thing in his career. Every comment of his is guaranteed to be the dreariest form of politically correct drivel imaginable, making the title of his show quite ironic. He takes on nothing but the safest targets, and he does it poorly.

I don't care about his jokes. Hell, one of my favorite comedians of all time is George Carlin and I couldn't disagree with his politics more.

What ai don't like about Maher is the condescending way he acts toward religious people. He doesn't know the truth anymore than anyone else. His atheist views are just as big a leap of faith as faith in a higher power, yet he treats religious people as if they're all country bumpkin dolts.

He's not funny he's just rude and nasty. There is a difference.

The the hatefulness is what bothers me the most. I could care less about his show, and he has a right to an opinion... But why does he feel like it has to be done through an attack on a person's beliefs?

It's interesting that someone who considers himself a liberal is so closed minded and hateful. I thought liberals were against that kind of stuff. :whoknows:

agree he should be ignored, disagree it is satire. Mahers views on Christians and organized religion aren't any more satire than than the crazy born again preachers you see holding signs saying all gays/jews/catholics etc. will burn in hell. It's pretty absurd to equate a crass, atheist comedian to a Klansman or the Westboro Baptist Church, which has happened in this thread. It's satire. He's making fun of the devoutly Christian right. He's not lynching them from trees in the south, like Klansmen did to African-Americans, or telling the rest of the country that God Hates Fags and protesting soldier's funerals. The comparison is lacking. Severely.

It's crass, but it's comedy. Tim Tebow openly prays to his god to help him win football games.

When that doesn't happen, it pretty much opens him up to these types of commentaries or satires.

You have the right to believe what you want. There is a difference between Klans men sure, they are murderers. Not so much Westboro Baptists, they exercise their right to free speech, also in despicable ways and peddle hate to a niche market to keep their name in the paper...sounds exactly the same to me. In my opinion there is zero difference between telling a Christian that they are wasting their life by believing in God and telling an atheist they are going to hell because they don't believe in god. Neither should affect the other if you are strong in your belief.

Labeling yourself a comedian does not mean it is satire. Satire requires a statement or proposal so outlandish that it can not be taken seriously such as the short story an modest proposal, farenheight 451 etc-a large potion of literary satire is the very opposite of funny

Bill Maher is not a satirist he is a liberal atheist comedian who uses his fame to mock the religous right(see religilous). That doesn't make him a satirist, satirists deserve respect for pointing out societies ills. If he had gone after Catholic priests for the pedophilia thing, or anti-abotionists for crazy right wing view or militants wanting to re-start the crusades fine. But to single out a person for being publicly christian in what I consider a very non-intrusive way is not satire. it is bullying, same as if he decided his show would mock fat people and instead of going after McDonalds he decided to pick a O-lineman and mock him, you can't do a satire on an individual as an individual is not indicitave of society as a whole.

You have a right to like/dislike him, and all comedians play towards some form of predjudice to some degree. Personally this isn't any more offensive than some of the thing Daniel Tosh spouts off on Tosh.0, still doesn't make him a satirist. Sometimes it is just funny watching people be mean, kids laughed at the bully in high school too.

It was bad joke, but it was joke and you could see where he was trying to go with it. Execution was bad, but that happens in black comedy. There far more important matters in the world to get excited/mad about then this. BTW Tebow is now a national figure and professional so he is far game for satire now, just like Hollywood starlet.

Here's a thought....what if someone else said it? I mean, from Bill Maher garbage isn't surprising. But what about other detractors or media personalities? What if a Jim Rome or Chris Berman would have said it? Would he still have a job? They would be fired or make an apology immediately. If you really want to get out of Bill's pocket, then do not give him the attention he craves. He is just the latest non-relevant person to jump on Tim's wagon. I did not know he had a show until again (JUMPED ON TEBOW'S WAGON) for a free ride.

Right. I'm so confused. People say they would cancel or have cancelled HBO just because of the Bill Maher show? Which means they miss out on shows like Game of Thrones, Hung, Boardwalk Empire, Saturday night Premieres, etc..? For people to actually cancel HBO thinking it hurts the network or its the only thing you can do to take a shot at Bill Maher is hilarious.

This. He may be the left's answer to Fox News, or worse, but he knew exactly what he was doing. Poking the religious right with a stick has been his thing for how many years now? Tebow just offered a convenient platform. His comment was tasteless, classless and an embarrassment to the left side of the fence, but the attention he's getting is ridiculous. Don't like it, fine. Cancel your HBO, but do it quietly and he won't get the publicity along with it. Maybe go get some fresh air too.

I personally don't think it is worth it over this, but those of you who are saying it won't do anything are incorrect. It just depends on how many people are pissed off. And perhaps I'm the one being close-minded here, because I'm not used to being around so many people that criticize lefties, like Bill Mahr. LOL. Between 19 years in DC and 3 years in Seattle before I came to Denver, I was used to being around more people of the same political views/mindset as me. Here in Denver, this is my first time where the left and right seem to be pretty much even. So shame on me for knee-jerk reacting because folks spoke their minds and felt differently than I do. People tend to mellow the longer they have been posting here. Set yourself a limit where you will only have serious discussions with posters of at least X many posts.

My is limit is lower than 1000 posts anyone less than that I will give like 2 posts to see if they are discussing or trolling and move on. Also if they are named MOtorboat I will mock them mercilessly...cause thats how I roll :D

Good to see people are hopping on board. What a great show. :)

Do you guys watch Boardwalk Empire? Steve Buscemi is absolutely AMAZING.

I have not seen it but I asked the wife this morning about it and she said it is good.

Just need to watch it from the beginning to understand what is going on.

I had never heard of that show before it was brought up in this thread, so once again I thank the OP! I can't wait to watch it!

I see. Anyone that doesn't live their life on this message board, isn't worthy of interaction. Stay classy.

I dont understand these dudes like Maher, who claim to be atheists and hate religion, yet they practice atheism with religious zealousness. They are fanatical, just as much as , if not more so, than religious fanatics.

I stated in my post that if someone has less than 1000 posts I will respond like 2 times to get a feel for if they are sincere or if they are just stirring the pot. I always try to keep it level headed. There are some posters with 20 posts who bring a lot to the table. More often than not those with 20 posts are just here to stir up debate and then leave never to be heard from again. Don't go attacking me over how I choose my battles

I don't know if you watch Southpark, but it reminds me of the family that adopts Kenny that practices strict agnosticism...hilarious if you havent seen it

Sorry for not being more specific, but I was actually referring to people in this thread judging/taking shots at each other LOL.

I might've gone too far, but in general it seems like a lot of the people in here are angry. Like, I can feel the hate from reading their posts. LOL.

Here's me eating a slice of the humble pie. Yummy. :)

Boardwalk Empire is probably the best show on television right now though. :)

I didn't get season one of Boardwalk Empire for Christmas, the one dark spot on an otherwise excellent Holiday. I've seen two episodes and it is friggin' brilliant.

Here is why Maher is different, and why he is on a par with David Duke. If he simply criticized political opponents, or politiciansd he doesn't like that is totally cool. He crossed the line into the same terrain normally occupied by the likes of Westboro and various neo-Nazis by insulting religious believers however. This too me is a bright absolute line, and it applies to Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, the "Religious Right" (whatever the Hell that means), Jehovah's Witnesses, Falun Gong, Zoroastrians, Hindus, Buddhists, what have you, Trying to pretend it is about politics is bullshit and an evasion. He is a hatemonger, pure and simple. He has exposed himself. His joke was no different than if he had made some crack about black guys being addicted to white women and fried chicken. That would have cost him his job and rightfully so. We cannot pretend that we are open minded or tolerant people if the likes of Bill Maher or his hate is accepted in polite company.

Note - the Government has no proper role in this, but his employer certainly does.

In other news the NFL changed one of Tebow's INT's from the Bills game to a sack/fumble.

maher is an entertainer. a former actor/comedian. i have a hard time believing he's sincere; or anything more than a guy who found the role of a lifetime for an opinionated man. i feel the same about rush limbaugh, glen beck, ed schultz, etc. they're all entertainers hiding behind the tag of "moral megaphones." and their roles/opinions change with the tides that carry their relevance.

my opinion: reacting passionately against any of these people is exactly what they want. ignorance is the best response.

The distinction I would make is the 2 groups you highlighted hate a person because of how they were born, whilst Maher appears to be disgusted by the choices a person has made in their life. I personally feel beliefs are fair game as long as you are attacking the institution itself, I don't feel an individual should be mocked or persecuted because of his/her beliefs. For example if you want to attack the perceived hypocrisy of the catholic church fair game, if you want to attack my wife for being Catholic whole different story. as info Pastafarianism is a great satire regarding the teaching of creationism in schools, it knocks organized religion to an extent, but brings up valid concerns for discussion as all satire should, I think it is a legitimate commentary even if i find certain points offensive

A.) Maher is a provocative political comedian - HBO signed up for that. Hank Williams is a musician who the Disney Channel paid to sing the MNF song. Big difference in their job descriptions and their bosses.

B.) As a card carrying lefty, I was not offended by what Williams had to say... I thought it was moronic, but not offensive. It was his bosses at the Disney channel who were horrified, not liberals in general.
