I must rant a little.

http://thesuperficial.com/2009/02/joaquin_phoenix_sits_next_to_d.php

Been there, done that.

Don't get me wrong....I admire this man's acting, but he's trying to do the impossible. There was only ONE Andy Kauffman. I'm glad other people saw through this too.

When Joaquin first announced that he was "going to reitre from acting", I was skeptical...then he said he was going to pursue his music career. After seeing the Letterman clips, I remembered Andy and Jerry fighting on stage in front of Dave. I don't know what David Letterman was thinking. I guess he was trying to get back to the brilliance of his younger years...when he was random and he drew in a huge cult following (myself included). He should have stuck with throwing melons from the rooftops.

I guess people no longer know who Andy was, but I do. He was a genius. He brought out the best and the worst of anybody he chose to encounter. He was a master at manipulation and comedy.

The ability to move people to laughter is a powerful thing. Andy was a God in this respect.

But then again, knowing Andy...he might have arranged this with Letterman before he died, showing people that randomness is a wonderful thing. I still expect good old Tony Clifton to emerge from time to time.

If you want to read about true genius....

There's a reference to the Letterman Show here.

This man was my idol....still is.

Maybe deep down inside Joaquin is that little boy carrying that brown paper bag of porn and wishing his dentist dad would love him as well as his new family. :tsk: Poor little guy. Maybe he needs to talk to Keanu again. :salute:

No, he's working on something with Casey Affleck...as if that's not bad enough. David Letterman loves the random shit...

Trust me on this. It was an act. All of it. If he was that gone, they would have cut the interview short and replaced the time with another guest.

No agent in the world...especially a guy who ahd been straight and narrow in acting for that long...would let this go down. It's fake.

I just don't know who had the idea to do this, Dave or Joaquin?

My guess would be Dave.

Some people don't "get it". Mainly cuz they HAVE to have a punchline.

Andy like to observe people and he used people to amuse himself. Their reactions to things....the world was his comedian.

Performance art at its best and way ahead of his time.

I loved Andy Kufman when I learned of him, but he was a bit before my time. I can see what Phoenix is doing as more of a tribute, and I am interested to see where he goes with it. I have seen the rap videos linked to it, and he is going with it 100% to me.

Remember Dr. V. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

why do people admire Andy Kaufmann so much? Was it the movie "man on the moon?" I think that Oliver Stone's movie "the doors" did a similar thing for Jim Morrison, who was another selfadulating dyck

Andy took his entire audience out for milk and cookies.

He wrestled....WOMEN. He made me happy to be a kid when I was a kid. I adored him then and I do now. If you enjoy my postings and any of my musings...then you get Andy. He's my inspiration most of the time.

He did things to make you think "was that real?" Each time he did it...people asked that question. He used people to amuse himself, in turn amusing people.

Life REALLY is what you make of it. In your own mind's eye...it's exactly what you make of it.

Life doesn't have to be one episode after another of insufferable boredom.

You see, unless you're even partially crazy & NOT wearing your stiff adult suit....I don't think you're going to get it.

I love this post.

I know nothing about Andy Kaufmann, other than the man on Taxi. I do enjoy your posts, btw.

Pay no mind to that movie...read about this guy, Nut.
He was random and fun and he really showed you what life should be about.
He wsn't a drug addict and he didn't drink. He loved Ice cream and candy.

The guy did some great things, some funny things. The movie wasn't even accurate. Real life stuff was WAY better.

And thank you, btw ;)

I think the dude was on acid or heroin or something... He sounds more like some strung out rock star than a guy who had an agenda.

He could very well be strung out, but on the other hand, he is an excellent actor with a very strange sense of humor. He actually said he wants the press/media to be made a fool of for reporting about nothing. They reported that he said this, and are continuing to report everything he does since. It could be some kind of elaborate joke.

Or he could be on drugs. :noidea:

The mass majorty of this country is not deep enough to handle the kind of humor he's trying to dish.

It's silly & unless he's doing it for his own amusement...it won't work.

Honestly - he has always kinda grossed me out - there is just something about him that i have never liked and honestly dont see why everyone thinks he is just so awesome :whoknows: The clip they showed on lettermen barely showed any acting on his part at all

I never saw walk the line and anyone could have been cast in that Gladiator and made it work -

Hollywood bores me - so i dont get all this hoopla surrounding him and his decision - big freakin deal so he wont act anymore - these days there are 100 people who could replace him IMO
