What's "Funeral Death Metal?"

Northman
01-31-2009, 01:11 PM
You mean Funeral Doom Metal? lol

Essentially, its depressing lyrics about doom and death with a sound influenced by bands like Black Sabbath etc. If you've ever heard of MASTODON they have a similiar feeling but darker.

Yea, Doom metal like that is pretty atomspheric. The vocals just add to the dismay and overall appeal of the music. Certainly an acquired taste for certain fans thats for sure.

I wouldn't dislike so much of that music if there wasn't any growling. It's so annoying.

My wife is in the music business so I get to hear a bunch of stuff. I heard that Cannibal Corpse is pretty popular. I heard snippets of Wino and Woe of Tyrants. The Metal Blade album covers are insane. I just can't get the music.

Whitechapel... wow. First death growls I heard. Combined with the melodies, I was in serious WTF mode.

It's not my cup of tea. The death growls are disturbing and just as people do with hip hop, I don't get it. But I do love the tones itself, it would sound cool with singing vocals, to me at least.

Whitechapel.....that whole genre their part of...they claim to be all death metal. But bands like them, Job For a Cowboy, Suicide Silence, Winds of Plague....they all suck. Made me lose complete interest in the metal genre. That's why I only listen to a select few. I may be the only one who feels this way, but all these "death-core" bands are a complete joke. It gets so boring listening them play these "breakdowns" in each and every song. I totally hate that genre.

Of course there is one band who is involved with that scene, but I wouldn't consider them playing that genre. They are more technical death metal. They're called The Faceless. They're amazing musicians and it sucks that they have to play with those damn bands I mentioned every time they go out on tour.

I just heard an awesome track from Sunn O))) called Orakulum. This is a cool, dark song reminiscent of slipping endlessly into an eternal void of darkness and lost hope... or as I call it, Oakland circa '03-'08. I was taken aback by it at first, but once I closed my eyes and absorbed it in a mini-trance, I was hooked.

Yea, Sunn O))) are an interesting band to say the least. I know on one of their albums they had a guest singer from a Black Metal band do vocals for a song and he did it while laying in a coffin. Talk about nuts.

This album is vastly different than most of his material. His last album i actually gave an 8. But this one is far too melodic. Its basically new age/elevator music so im not sure what yngwie's goal here was. Its beautifully written but its very hard to get into. There is no rocking edge to it at all which after a couple of songs almost puts me to sleep.

Devin Townsend- Ki
Genre: Progressive Rock/Metal
Rating: 9/10

Uh yea, so the Madman yet again goes beyond the boundaries of what i expect. This
is the first DT album that i have ever had to go (and will go) listen to 4-5 times before i
truly understand where he was going with this. Not that its totally off the wall like EKO
or straight up progressive like Terria. But man, he's gone and utlized a lot of blues styled
playing in this, even so much as to imitate or mimic The King with songs like "Trainfire".
He also had his lady sing more than a couple of versus on songs like "Heaven Send". The
song "Ki" alone is absolutely worthy of a listen. No, this album is not laced with heavy metal
riffs so if your expecting anything near SYL or the DTB stay away. If you want a musical
journey and transending experience than by all means give this baby a whirl.

and sounds pretty dated. Still some quality tracks here though. They have
like a Queensryche/Fates Warning sound to them.

What are the different genres of Metal?
Can you explain them or give examples?
I never understood it.

Sure, i can give a little breakdown.

Heavy/Tradition Metal:
Metal that can dabble into metal/rock without getting too extreme or out of character musically. Examples (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Savatage, Nevermore, Early-Pantera, Crimson Glory)

Death Metal:
Metal that uses a deep/raspy vocal arrangement, very fast and complex song structures with ever changing tempo's. Lyrical themes deal generally with War, Politics, Death, Horror Movie themes, and the Occult. Examples (Morbid Angel, Nile, Death, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse) With the sub genres it can vary between having more keyboard laced material, clean vocals mixed with raspy vocals, or more technicality in the song writing.

Sub-genres: Melodic Death Metal, Symphonic Death Metal, Progressive/Technical Death Metal

Black Metal:
Metal that is also very fast but unlike Death Metal uses a more distinct and raw sound. Also add in deep vs high shrieking vocal arrangements with the occasional female background harmonies. Black Metal also tends to specifically use lyrical themes regarding Satanism, Paganism, and the Occult. Examples (Mayhem, Burzum, Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Vreid)

Sub-genres: Melodic Black Metal, Symphonic Black Metal, Progressive/Experimental Black Metal

Power Metal:
Metal that uses very precise guitar playing often transcending regular heavy metal standards but taking it up a notch especially vocally. Uses primarily clean and high vocals with lyrical themes dealing with fantasy concepts (Tolkien inspired in some cases). Examples (Primal Fear, Rhapsody of Fire, Manowar, Dragonforce)

Sub-genres: Progressive Power Metal, Symphonic Power Metal

Doom Metal:
Metal that generally downtunes and slows down the pace drawing out the riffs. Vocal ranges can vary depending on the band and the lyrical content is generally very depressing and somber. Examples (My Dying Bride, Evoken, Cathedral, Swallowing the Sun)

Sub-Genres: Stoner Doom Metal

Progressive Metal:
Metal that concentrates more on playing ability and technicality with unique and often diverse musical arrangements. Lyrical content and vocal arrangements can vary. Examples (Dream Theater, OSI, Ayreon, Opeth, Cloudscape)

Sub-Genres: Progressive Rock

Thrash Metal:
Metal that is very fast but uses a constant power chord riff throughout a song without changing the tempo too much. Lyrical themes can vary as well as vocal arrangements. Examples (Testament, Slayer, Early-Metallica, Lamb of God, Overkill, Exodus, Legion of the Damned)

Viking/Folk Metal:
Metal that borrows a mixture of Death, Black, and Thrash but focuses mainly on Norse Mythology, Paganism, and sometimes beer drinking/partying. Vocal style can vary but the music also tends to add in flutes, cellos, violins, horns, and other odd and interesting instruments. Examples (Amon Amarth, Raventhrone, Enslaved, Einherjer, Korpiklaani)

Gothic Metal:
Metal that generally focuses on female vocal arrangements sometimes with male backing vocals. Lyrical content can vary but generally focuses on horror, vampirism, and somber subject matter. Examples (Leave's Eye's, Lacuna Coil, Flowing Tears, Theater of Tragedy)

Nu-Metal:
Metal that encompasses riff breakdowns with rapping style vocals with modern everyday lyrical content and subject matter. Examples (Korn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Five Pointe O, Flaw, System of a Down)

Industrial Metal:
Metal that adds some form of electronic/dance into the musical arrangement. Lyrical content can vary as well as vocal arrangements. Often uses sampling and a overabundance of Synthesizers. Examples (Fear Factory, Pain, Deathstars, The Kovenant)

Anyhow, i covered most of it so i hope this helps a little.

Someone else asked me the same thing on the other site. Im a fan of the band and like a majority of their stuff but this last album is just a lot of rehashing without covering any new ground. There's a couple of good tracks on there but its more of the same and just kind of lulled me to sleep by the end of it. I think they need to try out some different things at this point so they dont become too stale as they did on this record.

I can check with her when she gets back, I think they're releasing 2 or 3. I've been trying to listen to some stuff from Southern Lord and Metal Blade but I can't get into it. My wife's got the bug though, she just loves all music which is why she's in the biz.

The one sub genre I like though is, I forget what it's called, but it's goth and has a female as the lead singer. I don't think Evenescence or Lacuna Coil fall into that category, but it's in that line.

Didnt dig Nile too much. It was ok but i still prefer "Annihilation of the Wicked" the most. But the new Hypocrisy was really damn good. I have those ratings somewhere in here. :salute:

Power and Prog metal is my thing, so I have to say I personally gave this one closer to a 9. I guess I'm taking into consideration that they just replaced their lead singer after the original passed away. The new addition has blended in perfectly and the band sounds better than ever.

If you are a fan of the more popular Prog metal bands of the world like Dream Theatre and Queensryche...you'll love this band and the new CD

Just bought Mastodon-crack the skye. Pretty good album, feel like if I dropped some acid I might really get into it. Just what I needed in my collection for some good mellow jams.
